Having sprinkled water, one should seat the Brāhmaṇas and invite them; for the divine rite, two, and for the ancestral rite, three—one for each, or both.
Even a lord should not make the meal elaborate here; the wise should first assign the Brāhmaṇas for the divine rite, with arghya and so on.
Having been permitted by the Brāhmaṇas, one should perform the fire ritual as prescribed, according to the rules stated in one's own Gṛhya-sūtra, and then prepare the rice cake in a bronze vessel.

Having completed the investiture with the sacred thread, then all the sprinkling and related rites should be performed by one who knows, with the thread worn over the right shoulder.
Then, from the remainder of the oblation, he should make six balls of food and offer water with sesame, using his left hand, with vessels meant for water.

Then, taking all the portions from the balls of food in order, he should first carefully give them to the Brahmins.
Because the portions are taken from the food, and the twice-born eat them, it is called 'anvāhārya'; therefore, it should be done at the waning of the moon.

At the end of the meal, he should again offer water with flowers and rice grains, reciting words of blessing, and gather all this over the balls of food.
He should perform the rite from the gods to the end; otherwise, the śrāddha is lost. Having dismissed the Brahmins, he should circumambulate them in the same way.
Desiring the southern direction, a man should pray to the ancestors: 'May our givers prosper, and may the Vedas and our lineage continue.'

Let there be those who ask from us, but let us not ask from anyone; this is declared to be the rule—thus, the food for the ancestors on the Parvan day is prescribed.
Just as at the waning of the moon, so also elsewhere it is stated: one should offer balls of food to cows, Brahmins, or into fire, or even into water.

The ancestors place the seed here, which increases the lineage; the remnants should remain until the Brahmins have departed.
After the rites for the ancestors are completed, one should then perform the Vaiśvadeva offering; having done so, together with the invited guests, one should peacefully partake of the food offered to the ancestors.
One should avoid eating again, traveling, exertion, or sexual union, as well as performing or partaking in another śrāddha—all this must be refrained from.
