When that weapon was repelled, Vishnu, the slayer of the Danavas, created the Kāladaṇḍa missile, terrifying to all worlds.
As it was being prepared, a harsh wind blew, the earth trembled, the goddess shook, and the demons became confused in mind.
Seeing that fierce weapon, the demons, reckless in battle, launched divine missiles of various forms in the conflict.
Grasana took up the Nārāyaṇa missile, Nimi the discus, and each released their own best weapon; Jambha prepared the Aishika missile to counter the Kāladaṇḍa missile.
Before twilight arrived and the demon lords could counter the missile, in that instant he slew crores of demon lords, along with their elephants and horses.
Afterwards, that weapon was pacified by the union of demon missiles; seeing the Kāladaṇḍa pacified, Hari, his form filled with wrath and valor, took up his own weapon.
He seized the discus, blazing like ten thousand suns, fierce as himself incarnate, and hurled it at the commander, aiming at his neck, hard as thunder and terrible.
Seeing the discus in the sky, the foremost demons, with all their might, could not withstand its fierce divine force, as fate brings fruitless effort.
That inconceivable, invincible discus fell upon Grasana's neck, splitting it in two; from his neck a terrible stream of blood flowed, and the discus returned again to Janardana's hand, shining like blazing fire.
When Grasana, the leader of the worlds, was slain, the demons fought without restraint against Hari.
With spears, maces, nooses, clubs, corpses, sharp-faced arrows, discs, and spears, they attacked.
Janardana, the wondrous warrior, countered those missiles released by the demons, making each one into hundreds with arrows resembling tongues of fire.
Then, their weapons and strength exhausted, the demons, their minds bewildered, became unable to take up arms in the battle.
At that time, the Daityas fought on all sides, in countless numbers, using the corpses of elephants and horses as weapons against Janardana.
Assuming many forms, Viṣṇu for a moment appeared with subdued arms, and in that tumultuous battle spoke to Garuḍa.
"Garuḍa, are you not yet weary even now in this fight? If you are still untired, then go towards Mathana's chariot."
If you are tired, then withdraw from the battle for a moment—so spoke Viṣṇu, the mighty lord, to Garuḍa.
In the battle, Garuḍa approached the dreadful-looking demon Mathana; seeing Viṣṇu, bearing conch, discus, and mace, the demon faced him.
He struck Viṣṇu on the chest with a sharp arrow from a bhindipāla; yet, in that great conflict, Viṣṇu regarded the blow as nothing.
Viṣṇu struck him with five arrows, honed and stone-tipped, and then again with ten drawn arrows, hitting him in the chest.
Pierced in his vital spots by Hari's arrows, the lord of the demons did not waver; after recovering for a moment, he then seized his iron club.
He struck Janārdana with that blazing club, and by that blow, Viṣṇu was slightly shaken.
Then Mādhava, his eyes wide with anger, seized his mace and, furious, crushed Mathana along with his chariot.
Then the lord of the demons fell, like a mountain at the end of its time; when that mighty demon fell to the earth,
the Daityas lost heart, like elephants sinking in the mud; and when those arrogant demons were thus defeated,
Enraged, his eyes bloodshot, the lord of the Daityas, Mahisha, fierce and relying on his own strength, advanced against Hari.
With a sharp-pointed spear, Mahisha wounded Hari, and with a lance, the hero struck Garuḍa in the chest.
Then, opening his mouth wide as a mountain cave, the demon sought to devour Garuḍa, the steadfast one, in battle.
But Acyuta, perceiving the demon's intention, filled his mouth with divine weapons, being of great might.
Then Garuḍa-bannered Viṣṇu released a stream of arrows at Mahisha, sealing his mouth with divine missiles empowered by sacred mantras.
