संचूर्णितोत्तमाङ्गस्तु निष्पिष्टमुकुटो ऽसुरः स्रुतरक्तौघरन्ध्रस्तु स्रुतधातुरिवाचलः
His head crushed, his crown shattered, the demon poured streams of blood, like a mountain with its ores flowing out.
प्रापतत्स्वे रथे भग्ने विसंज्ञः शिष्टजीवितः पतितस्य रथोपस्थे दानवस्याच्युतो ऽरिहा
Falling unconscious, his life barely remaining, he collapsed upon his broken chariot; the slayer of foes, Acyuta, stood by the fallen demon.
स्मितपूर्वमुवाचेदं वाक्यं चक्रायुधः प्रभुः गच्छासुर विमुक्तो ऽसि साम्प्रतं जीव निर्भयः
The lord, wielder of the discus, first smiled and then spoke these words: 'Go, demon, you are released for now; live on, free from fear.'
ततः स्वल्पेन कालेन अहमेव तवान्तकः एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य सारथिः कालनेमिनः अपवाह्य रथं दूरम् अनयत्कालनेमिनः
But soon, I myself shall be your end.' Hearing these words, Kālanemi's charioteer drove the chariot far away.

Mounting a mighty, mountain-like, fierce, rutting elephant, the powerful demon Nimi advanced to face Hari in battle.
तस्यासन्दानवा रौद्रा गजस्य पदरक्षिणः सप्तविंशतिसाहस्राः किरीटकवचोज्ज्वलाः
There stood twenty-seven thousand fierce sons of Dānavā, circling the elephant's feet, shining with crowns and armor.
अश्वारूढश्च मथनो जम्भकश्चोष्ट्रवाहनः शुम्भो ऽपि विपुलं मेषं समारुह्याव्रजद्रणम्
Mathana rode a horse, Jambhaka mounted a camel, and Śumbha, too, entered the battle riding a great ram.
अपरे दानवेन्द्रास्तु यत्ता नानास्त्रपाणयः आजघ्नुः समरे क्रुद्धा विष्णुमक्लिष्टकारिणम्
Other lords of the Dānavas, armed with various weapons and fully prepared, attacked Viṣṇu, the doer of flawless deeds, in their wrath on the battlefield.
परिघेण निमिर्दैत्यो मथनो मुद्गरेण तु शुम्भः शूलेन तीक्ष्णेन प्रासेन ग्रसनस्तथा
Nimi the demon struck with a mace, Mathana with a club, Śumbha with a sharp spear, and Grasaṇa likewise with a javelin.
चक्रेण महिषः क्रुद्धो जम्भः शक्त्या महारणे जघ्नुर्नारायणं सर्वे शेषास्तीक्ष्णैश्च मार्गणैः
The enraged Mahisha attacked with a discus, Jambha with a spear in the great battle, and all the rest struck Nārāyaṇa with sharp arrows.
तान्यस्त्राणि प्रयुक्तानि शरीरं विविशुर्हरेः गुरूक्तान्युपदिष्टानि सच्छिष्यस्य श्रुताविव
Those weapons, when released, entered Hari's body as teachings imparted by a guru enter the attentive mind of a worthy disciple.

एकेन महिषं क्रुद्धो विव्याधोरसि पत्त्रिणा जम्भं द्वादशभिस्तीक्ष्णैः सर्वांश्चैकैकशो ऽष्टभिः
In his wrath, he pierced Mahisha in the chest with a single feathered arrow, Jambha with twelve sharp ones, and each of the others with eight.
तस्य तल्लाघवं दृष्ट्वा दानवाः क्रोधमूर्छिताः नर्दमानाः प्रयत्नेन चक्रुरत्यद्भुतं रणम्
Seeing his swiftness, the Dānavas, overcome by rage, roared and, with great effort, made the battle exceedingly wondrous.
चिछेदाथ धनुर्विष्णोर् निमिर्भल्लेन दानवः संध्यमानं शरं हस्ते चिछेद महिषासुरः
Then Nimi the Dānava cut Viṣṇu's bow with a broad-headed arrow, and Mahishāsura severed the arrow Viṣṇu held as he was about to release it.
पीडयामास गरुडं जम्भस्तीक्ष्णैस्तु सायकैः भुजं तस्याहनद्गाढं शुम्भो भूधरसंनिभः
Jambha wounded Garuḍa with sharp arrows, and Śumbha, massive as a mountain, struck Garuḍa's arm with a heavy blow.
छिन्ने धनुषि गोविन्दो गदां जग्राह भीषणाम् तां प्राहिणोत्स वेगेन मथनाय महाहवे
When his bow was cut, Govinda seized his fearsome mace and hurled it with force at Mathana in the great battle.
तामप्राप्तां निमिर्बाणैश् चिछेद तिलशो रणे तां नाशमागतां दृष्ट्वा हीनाग्रे प्रार्थनामिव
But before it reached its mark, Nimi shattered it to pieces with arrows in the fight, just as a prayer is cut short before its fulfillment.
जग्राह मुद्गरं घोरं दिव्यरत्नपरिष्कृतम् तं मुमोचाथ वेगेन निमिमुद्दिश्य दानवम्
He then took up a terrible club adorned with divine jewels and hurled it swiftly at Nimi, the Dānava.
तम् आयान्तं वियत्येव त्रयो दैत्या न्यवारयन् गदया जम्भदैत्यस्तु ग्रसनः पट्टिशेन तु
As it flew through the sky, three Daityas blocked its path: Jambha with a mace, Grasaṇa with a broadsword.
शक्त्या च महिषो दैत्यः स्वपक्षजयकाङ्क्षया निराकृतं तमालोक्य दुर्जने प्रणयं यथा
And Mahisha the Daitya, desiring victory for his own side, blocked it with a spear, just as a wicked man thwarts affection.
जग्राह शक्तिमुग्राग्राम् अष्टघण्टोत्कटस्वनाम् जम्भाय तां समुद्दिश्य प्राहिणोद्रणभीषणः
He seized a fierce spear, its tip dreadful, resounding with eight bells, and hurled it towards Jambha, the terrifying warrior.
तामम्बरस्थां जग्राह गजो दानवनन्दनः गृहीतां तां समालोक्य शिक्षामिव विवेकिभिः
The elephant, son of the Danavas, caught it as it hung in the sky; seeing it grasped, the wise regarded it as a lesson.
दृढं भारसहं सारम् अन्यदादाय कार्मुकम् रौद्रास्त्रमभिसंधाय तस्मिन्बाणं मुमोच ह
Taking another strong, weight-bearing, and essential bow, he prepared a fierce missile and released an arrow upon it.
ततो ऽस्त्रतेजसा सर्वं व्याप्तं लोकं चराचरम् ततो बाणमयं सर्वम् आकाशं समदृश्यत
Then, by the brilliance of the weapon, the entire world, moving and unmoving, was enveloped; the whole sky appeared filled with arrows.
