Then he rained fire everywhere, intensely; the lord blinded the eyes of the demon chiefs.
The fat of elephants melted, their cries fell to the earth; horses, scorched by heat, gasped, and even the charioteers suffered.
Here and there, tormented by thirst, they sought water, and shade beneath the trees, and the caves of mountains.
As they begged for coolness, the wildfire spread among the trees, blazing fiercely and burning the trunks; seeing water ahead, surging with waves, those seeking water pressed forward.
Though the water lay before them, the powerless could not reach it; unable to obtain water, their mouths agape, their minds departed, they lay upon the earth.
Here and there upon the ground were seen dead lords of the demons, fallen chariots, elephants, and horses, all brought to their end.
Standing or running, vomiting, with garments and blood streaming, thousands of dead Danavas were seen.
As the great destruction of the demon kings unfolded, Kālanemi, his eyes reddened with wrath, his anger inflamed, arose.
He became like a storm-cloud, with countless flashing lakes, his deep thunderous roar shaking the hearts of the world.
Covering the expanse of the sky, he dispelled the illusion of the sun, and poured cold water upon the army of the demon kings.
The demons, receiving that rain, gradually revived, like wilted sprouts upon the earth regaining life after rainfall.
Then Kālanemi, the great asura, taking the form of a cloud, unleashed a fierce shower of weapons, unconquerable, upon the hosts of the gods.
Afflicted by that shower, the mighty demon kings, unable to find any way out, were like cows tormented by cold.
They collapsed upon each other, their hands loosened upon their backs; in their own distress, they fell among elephants and horses.
In the chariots, terrified immortals hid here and there; others, their limbs curled, covered their faces with their own hands.
Distraught, they wandered in all ten directions; in such a tumultuous battle, with the destruction of the gods underway.
One saw bodies fallen on the earth, their joints shattered by weapons, arms severed, heads split, and thighs cut apart.
Chariots overturned, rows of crushed banners, horses with broken limbs, and elephants, massive as mountains, lay scattered.
The earth was transformed, both distorted and undistorted, by pools of flowing blood; thus, in battle, the mighty demon Kālanemi prevailed.
Within a single moment, he slew a hundred thousand Gandharvas, five hundred thousand Yakshas, and six hundred thousand Rakshasas.
He slew three hundred thousand swift Kinnaras, and, fearless, seven hundred thousand chief Pisachas.

Countless multitudes of other divine beings he slew, in the tens of millions, enraged, with wondrous weapons, skilled in arms.
Thus, when Bhīma was being scorned, then you, in the exhaustion of the battle, the two Aśvins, blazing with wondrous weapons and armor, became enraged.
In the battle, the two gods struck the demon, who was like the fire of death, each approaching the terrible foe and wounding him with sixty arrows.
With their sharp-pointed arrows, they struck the demon, terrifying in appearance, in his vital spots; by the force of their arrow-strikes, his consciousness became somewhat disturbed.
He seized an eight-spoked discus, oiled and deadly in battle; with that discus, he cut apart the yoke of the Aśvins’ chariot.
Then the demon took up his bow and arrows, fierce as venomous serpents, and rained them down upon the physicians’ heads, covering them as they moved through the sky.
But they, too, with their sharp weapons, cut down the demon’s arrows; seeing this feat of theirs, he was amazed and filled with rage.
Then, in great anger, he seized a massive iron mace, dreadful as the rod of Time.
Whirling it with speed, he hurled it at the Aśvins’ chariot; seeing the mace coming through the sky,
