With fierce fires conjured by illusion, he filled the directions; then, in an instant, all three worlds became engulfed in flames.
By that mass of flames, the moon lost its coolness; then, gradually, the harsh cold day was dispelled.
That was the power of the Dānava lords, the illusion of Kalanemi; seeing this, the sun, regaining consciousness, spoke to Aruṇa, his charioteer, his anger aroused, the single eye of the world.
"O Aruṇa, quickly drive the chariot, for Kalanemi's chariot is there; a fierce clash will occur, and heroes will fall."
"Here, the moon has been conquered, whose power we relied upon." So spoken, Garuḍa's elder brother urged on the chariot.
With horses held firmly by effort, adorned with white chowries, the blessed lamp of the world then took up his stretched bow.
He took two arrows, splendid and radiant like divine serpent venom, and, employing the Saṃcāra weapon, fitted one to his bow and released it.
The second arrow, infused with illusion by Indrajāla, he let fly; with the Saṃcāra weapon, he caused a momentary reversal of forms.
He made the gods appear as demons, and the demons as divine; thinking the gods were his own, he struck them with dreadful, swift weapons.
Kālanemi, seized by wrath like Death at the end of time, slew some with his sharp sword, some with showers of arrows, some with fierce maces, and some with terrible axes.
With fierce speed, he cut off the heads of some, severed arms, chariots, and charioteers; some he crushed beneath the force of his chariot, others he struck in rage with violent blows of his fist.
Seeing his own slain in battle, Nemi, the lord of the demons, and the asuras, overwhelmed by the gods, resumed their true forms.
Kālanemi, possessed by anger, did not recognize their forms; the demon Nemi, seeing them, spoke to Kālanemi.
I am Nemi, not a god, Kālanemi; know me. Many mighty ones have been slain by you in battle, deceived.
Here are one hundred thousand demons, unconquerable by the gods; unleash the Brahma weapon, swiftly, to counter all their weapons.
Thus instructed, the demon, his mind agitated with confusion, fitted an arrow empowered by the Brahma weapon.
The lord of the demons, himself a thorn to the gods, released it; then, by the power of the weapon, the three worlds, with all their moving and unmoving beings, were enveloped.
The entire army of the gods was seized with fear; the Saṃcāra weapon was subdued, and in the battle, it shone forth.
When that weapon was repelled, the sun lost its brilliance; relying on the illusion of Mahendra, he manifested countless forms of himself.
With the thunderous impact of his hands, he overwhelmed the three worlds; he scorched the demon host, whose blood flowed in torrents.
Then he rained fire everywhere, intensely; the lord blinded the eyes of the demon chiefs.
The fat of elephants melted, their cries fell to the earth; horses, scorched by heat, gasped, and even the charioteers suffered.
Here and there, tormented by thirst, they sought water, and shade beneath the trees, and the caves of mountains.
As they begged for coolness, the wildfire spread among the trees, blazing fiercely and burning the trunks; seeing water ahead, surging with waves, those seeking water pressed forward.
Though the water lay before them, the powerless could not reach it; unable to obtain water, their mouths agape, their minds departed, they lay upon the earth.
Here and there upon the ground were seen dead lords of the demons, fallen chariots, elephants, and horses, all brought to their end.
Standing or running, vomiting, with garments and blood streaming, thousands of dead Danavas were seen.
As the great destruction of the demon kings unfolded, Kālanemi, his eyes reddened with wrath, his anger inflamed, arose.
He became like a storm-cloud, with countless flashing lakes, his deep thunderous roar shaking the hearts of the world.
Covering the expanse of the sky, he dispelled the illusion of the sun, and poured cold water upon the army of the demon kings.
