पदातिरथ वित्तेशो गदामादाय भैरवीम् महाहवविमर्देषु दृप्तशत्रुविनाशिनीम्

Unassailable by all beings, honored for many years, its body smeared with various sandalwoods, adorned with divine flowers.
निर्मलायोमयीं गुर्वीम् अमोघां हेमभूषणाम् चिक्षेप मूर्ध्नि संक्रुद्धो जम्भस्य तु धनाधिपः
Pure, made of iron, heavy, unfailing, adorned with golden ornaments—the enraged lord of wealth hurled it at Jambha's head.
आयान्तीं तां समालोक्य तडित्संघातमण्डिताम् दैत्यो गदाभिघातार्थं शस्त्रवृष्टिं मुमोच ह
Seeing it approaching, radiant like a cluster of lightning, the demon released a shower of weapons to strike the mace.
चक्राणि कुणपान्प्रासान् भुशुण्डीः पट्टिशानपि हेमकेयूरनद्धाभ्यां बाहुभ्यां चण्डविक्रमः
Discs, skulls, spears, bhuśuṇḍīs, and pattiśas, too, with arms bound by golden bracelets, fiercely courageous.
व्यर्थीकृत्य तु तान्सर्वान् आयुधान्दैत्यवक्षसि प्रस्फुरन्ती पपातोग्रा महोल्केवाद्रिकन्दरे
But having rendered all those weapons ineffective, the fierce mace fell upon the demon's chest, flashing like a great meteor in a mountain cave.
स तयाभिहतो गाढं पपात रथकूबरे स्रोतोभिश्चास्य रुधिरं सुस्राव गतचेतसः
Struck hard by it, he fell onto the chariot's hub, and streams of blood flowed from him as he lost consciousness.
जम्भं तु निहतं मत्वा कुजम्भो भैरवस्वनः धनाधिपस्य संक्रुद्धो वाक्येनातीव कोपितः
Thinking Jambha slain, Kujambha, with a terrifying roar, was greatly enraged by the words of the lord of wealth.
चक्रे बाणमयं जालं दिक्षु यक्षाधिपस्य तु चिछेद बाणजालं तद् अर्धचन्द्रैः शितैस्ततः
He created a net of arrows in all directions against the lord of the Yakshas, but that net was cut apart by sharp crescent-headed arrows.
मुमोच शरवृष्टिं तु तस्मै यक्षाधिपो बली स तं दैत्यः शरव्रातं चिछेद निशितैः शरैः
Then the powerful lord of the Yakshas released a rain of arrows at him, and the demon cut apart that mass of arrows with sharp shafts.
व्यर्थीकृतां तु तां दृष्ट्वा शरवृष्टिं धनाधिपः शक्तिं जग्राह दुर्धर्षां हेमघण्टाट्टहासिनीम्
Seeing that rain of arrows rendered useless, the lord of wealth took up an irresistible spear, adorned with golden bells.
बाहुना रत्नकेयूरकान्तिसंतानहासिना स तां निरूप्य वेगेन कुजम्भाय मुमोच ह
With an arm shining with the brilliance of jeweled bracelets, he aimed it and hurled it swiftly at Kujambha.
सा कुजम्भस्य हृदयं दारयामास दारुणम् वित्तेहा स्वल्पसत्त्वस्य पुरुषस्येव भाविता
That spear tore through Kujambha's heart cruelly, as fate does to a man of little strength who craves wealth.
अथास्य हृदयं भित्त्वा जगाम धरणीतलम् ततो मुहूर्तादस्वस्थो दानवो दारुणाकृतिः
Then, piercing his heart, it reached the earth; after a moment, the demon of dreadful form became unsteady.
जग्राह पट्टिशं दैत्यः प्रांशुं शितशिलामुखम् स तेन पट्टिशेनाजौ धनदस्य स्तनान्तरम्
The demon seized a long pike with a sharp stone tip, and with it struck the chest of Dhanada in battle.
वाक्येन तीक्ष्णरूपेण मर्मान्तरविसर्पिणा निर्बिभेदाभिजातस्य हृदयं दुर्जनो यथा
With words as piercing and penetrating as a weapon, the wicked one wounded the heart of the noble, just as a villain harms the worthy.
तेन पट्टिशघातेन धनेशः परिमूर्छितः निपपात रथोपस्थे जर्जरो धूर्वहो यथा
Struck by that blow of the pike, Dhanesha lost consciousness and collapsed, shattered, onto the chariot floor like a broken banner.
तथागतं तु तं दृष्ट्वा धनेशं नरवाहनम् खड्गास्त्रो निरृतिर्देवो निशाचरबलानुगः
Seeing Dhanesha, the lord of men, in such a state, Nirriti, the god armed with a sword, accompanied by the night-stalker army, advanced.
अभिदुद्राव वेगेन कुजम्भं भीमविक्रमम् अथ दृष्ट्वा तु दुर्धर्षं कुजम्भो राक्षसेश्वरम्
He rushed swiftly at Kujambha, of terrible valor; and seeing the formidable Kujambha, the lord of the Rakshasas—
चोदयामास सैन्यानि राक्षसेन्द्रवधं प्रति स दृष्ट्वा चोदितां सेनां भल्लनानास्त्रभीषणाम्
He ordered his armies to attack, aiming to slay the king of the Rakshasas. Seeing the army thus commanded, bristling with arrows and fearsome weapons—
रथादाप्लुत्य वेगेन भूषणद्युतिभास्वरः खड्गेन कमलानीव विकोशेनाम्बरत्विषा
He leapt swiftly from his chariot, shining with the brilliance of his ornaments, and with his sword, gleaming like an unopened lotus in the sky—
चिछेद रिपुवक्त्राणि विचित्राणि समन्ततः तिर्यक्पृष्ठमधश्चोर्ध्वं दीर्घबाहुर्महासिना
With his mighty sword, his long arms struck down the faces of his enemies all around—sideways, behind, below, and above—severing them in every direction.
संदष्टौष्ठपुटाटोपभ्रुकुटीविकटाननः प्रचण्डकोपरक्ताक्षो न्यकृन्तद्दानवान्रणे
With lips pressed tight in fury, brows knotted in a fierce scowl, his eyes bloodshot with terrible wrath, he cut down the demons in battle.
ततो निःशेषितप्रायां विलोक्य स्वामनीकिनीम् मुक्त्वा कुजम्भो धनदं राक्षसेन्द्रमभिद्रवन्
Then, seeing his own army nearly destroyed, Kujambha left Dhanada and charged at the king of the Rakshasas.
लब्धसंज्ञो ऽथ जम्भस्तु धनाध्यक्षपदानुगान् जीवग्राहान्स जग्राह बद्ध्वा पाशैः सहस्रशः
Regaining consciousness, Jambha seized the attendants of the lord of wealth, capturing them alive and binding them by the thousands with nooses.
मूर्तिमन्ति तु रत्नानि विविधानि च दानवाः वाहनानि च दिव्यानि विमानानि सहस्रशः
The demons took hold of embodied jewels of many kinds, as well as divine vehicles and flying chariots by the thousands.
धनेशो लब्धसंज्ञो ऽथ तामवस्थां विलोक्य तु निःश्वसन्दीर्घमुष्णं च रोषात्ताम्रविलोचनः
Dhanesha, regaining his senses and seeing that situation, exhaled a long, hot breath, his eyes reddened with anger.
ध्यात्वास्त्रं गारुडं दिव्यं बाणं संधाय कार्मुके मुमोच दानवानीके तं बाणं शत्रुदारणम्
Meditating on the divine Garuda weapon, he fitted an arrow to his bow and released that enemy-shattering arrow into the demon army.
प्रथमं कार्मुकात्तस्य निश्चेरुर्धूमराजयः अनन्तरं स्फुलिङ्गानां कोटयो दीप्तवर्चसाम्
First, from his bow emerged clouds of smoke; then, countless blazing sparks of fire.
ततो ज्वालाकुलं व्योम चकारास्त्रं समन्ततः ततः क्रमेण दुर्वारं नानारूपं तदाभवत्
Then, the weapon made the sky blaze with flames on every side; and gradually, it became an unstoppable force of many forms.
