न मे कृत्यमनेनास्ति मातुराज्ञा कृता मया त्वं सुरासुरनाथो ऽसि मम च प्रपितामहः
'I have no further business with him; my mother's command has been fulfilled. You are the lord of gods and asuras, and my great-grandfather.'
करिष्ये त्वद्वचो देव एष मुक्तः शतक्रतुः तपसे मे रतिर्देव निर्विघ्नं चैव मे भवेत्
'I will do your bidding, O god; let Śatakratu be released. May my mind be devoted to austerities, O god, and may I be undisturbed.'
त्वत्प्रसादेन भगवन्न् इत्युक्त्वा विरराम सः तस्मिंस्तूष्णीं स्थिते दैत्ये प्रोवाचेदं पितामहः
Having said, 'By your grace, O Lord,' he became silent; as the demon stood there in silence, the Grandfather addressed him thus.
तपस्त्वं क्रूरमापन्नो ह्य् अस्मच्छासनसंस्थितः अनया चित्तशुद्ध्या ते पर्याप्तं जन्मनः फलम्
You have undertaken severe austerity, adhering to my command; with this purity of mind, the fruit of your birth is fulfilled.
इत्युक्त्वा पद्मजः कन्यां ससर्जायतलोचनाम् तामस्मै प्रददौ देवः पत्न्यर्थं पद्मसम्भवः
Having spoken thus, the Lotus-born created a maiden with eyes like lotus petals, and the god Padmasambhava gave her to him as a wife.
वराङ्गीति च नामास्याः कृत्वा यातः पितामहः वज्राङ्गो ऽपि तया सार्धं जगाम तपसे वनम्
Naming her Varāṅgī, the Grandfather departed; Vajrāṅga, together with her, went to the forest for austerity.
ऊर्ध्वबाहुः स दैत्येन्द्रो ऽचरदब्दसहस्रकम् कालं कमलपत्त्राक्षः शुद्धबुद्धिर् महातपाः
That lord of the demons, with arms raised, practiced austerity for a thousand years—Kāla, lotus-eyed, pure-minded, and great in penance.
तावच्चावाङ्मुखः कालं तावत्पञ्चाग्निमध्यगः निराहारो घोरतपास् तपोराशिरजायत
For that time, he remained facing downward, for that time, in the midst of five fires, fasting, terrible in austerity, he became a heap of penance.
ततः सो ऽन्तर्जले चक्रे कालं वर्षसहस्रकम् जलान्तरं प्रविष्टस्य तस्य पत्नी महाव्रता
Then he performed austerity in the water for a thousand years; as he entered the water, his wife, steadfast in great vows,
तस्यैव तीरे सरसस् तत्प्रीत्या मौनमास्थिता निराहारा तपो घोरं प्रविवेश महाद्युतिः
On the shore of that very lake, for his sake, she observed silence, fasting, and entered terrible austerity, radiant in glory.
तस्यां तपसि वर्तन्त्याम् इन्द्रश्चक्रे विभीषिकाम् भूत्वा तु मर्कटस्तत्र तदाश्रमपदं महान्
While she was engaged in that austerity, Indra created terror, becoming a great monkey at that time at her hermitage.
चक्रे विलोलं निःशेषं तुम्बीघटकरण्डकम् ततस्तु मेघरूषेण कम्पं तस्याकरोन्महान्
He made all her water pots, pitchers, and baskets tremble and scatter; then, taking the form of a cloud, he caused a great shaking there.
ततो भुजंगरूपेण बद्ध्वा च चरणद्वयम् अपाकर्षत्ततो दूरं भ्रमंस्तस्या महीमिमाम्
Then, taking the form of a serpent, he bound both her feet and dragged her far away, causing her to wander over the earth.
तपोबलाढ्या सा तस्य न वध्यत्वं जगाम ह ततो गोमायुरूपेण तस्यादूषयदाश्रमम्
Endowed with the power of austerity, she did not come to harm from him; then, taking the form of a jackal, he defiled her hermitage.
ततस्तु मेघरूपेण तस्याः क्लेदयदाश्रमम् भीषिकाभिर् अनेकाभिस् तां क्लिश्यन्पाकशासनः
Then, taking the form of a cloud, he soaked her hermitage; with many terrors, Pākashāsana tormented her.
विरराम यदा नैवं वज्राङ्गमहिषी तदा शैलस्य दुष्टतां मत्वा शापं दातुं व्यवस्थिता
When Vajrāṅga's wife did not cease her austerity, she, considering the mountain to be at fault, resolved to pronounce a curse.
स शापाभिमुखां दृष्ट्वा शैलः पुरुषविग्रहः उवाच तां वरारोहां वराङ्गीं भीरुचेतनः
Seeing her intent on cursing, the mountain, taking human form, spoke to that noble, beautiful lady, fearful in mind.
नाहं वराङ्गने दुष्टः सेव्यो ऽहं सर्वदेहिनाम् विभ्रमं तु करोत्येष रुषितः पाकशासनः
O Varāṅgī, I am not wicked; I am to be served by all embodied beings. It is Pākashāsana, enraged, who is causing this disturbance.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे जातः कालो वर्षसहस्रिकः तस्मिन्गते तु भगवान् काले कमलसंभवः तुष्टः प्रोवाच वज्राङ्गं तमागम्य जलाश्रयम्
Meanwhile, the thousand-year period was completed; when that time had passed, the blessed Lotus-born, pleased, came to Vajrāṅga, who was in the water, and spoke.
ददामि सर्वकामांस्ते उत्तिष्ठ दितिनन्दन एवमुक्तस्तदोत्थाय दैत्येन्द्रस्तपसां निधिः उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं सर्वलोकपितामहम्
I grant you all desires; arise, O son of Diti. Thus addressed, the lord of the demons, treasure of austerities, rose and, with joined palms, spoke to the Grandfather of all worlds.
आसुरो मास्तु मे भावः सन्तु लोका ममाक्षयाः तपस्येव रतिर् मेऽस्तु शरीरस्यास्तु वर्तनम्
May I not possess a demonic nature; may my worlds be imperishable; may I have delight in ascetic practice, and may my body continue to exist.
एवमस्त्विति तं देवो जगाम स्वकमालयम् वज्राङ्गो ऽपि समाप्ते तु तपसि स्थिरसंयमः
The god replied, 'So be it,' and returned to his own abode; Vajrāṅga, having completed his austerity with firm discipline,
आहारमिच्छन्भार्यां स्वां न ददर्शाश्रमे स्वके क्षुधाविष्टः स शैलस्य गहनं प्रविवेश ह
Desiring food and seeking his wife, he did not find her in his own hermitage; overcome by hunger, he entered the mountain's dense forest.
आदातुं फलमूलानि स च तस्मिन्व्यलोकयत् रुदतीं तां प्रियां दीनां तनुप्रच्छादिताननाम् तां विलोक्य स दैत्येन्द्रः प्रोवाच परिसान्त्वयन्
There, as he went to gather fruits and roots, he saw his beloved, weeping and distressed, her face veiled by her garment; seeing her, the lord of the Daityas spoke, gently consoling her.
केन ते ऽपकृतं भीरु यमलोकं यियासुना कं वा कामं प्रयच्छामि शीघ्रं मे ब्रूहि भामिनि
By whom have you been wronged, O timid one, by someone desiring to go to Yama's realm? Or what desire shall I fulfill for you? Quickly tell me, beautiful one.
त्रासितास्म्यपविद्धास्मि ताडिता पीडितापि च रौद्रेण देवराजेन नष्टनाथेव भूरिशः
I have been frightened, cast away, struck, and tormented by the fierce king of the gods, as one bereft of her protector, again and again.
दुःखपारमपश्यन्ती प्राणांस्त्यक्तुं व्यवस्थिता पुत्रं मे तारकं देहि दुःखशोकमहार्णवात्
Seeing no end to my suffering, I am resolved to abandon my life; give me my son Tāraka, that I may escape this vast ocean of grief and sorrow.
एवमुक्तः स दैत्येन्द्रः कोपव्याकुललोचनः शक्तो ऽपि देवराजस्य प्रतिकर्तुं महासुरः
Thus addressed, the lord of the Daityas, his eyes agitated with anger, though able to retaliate against the king of the gods, that great Asura—
तपः कर्तुं पुनर्दैत्यो व्यवस्वेत महाबलः ज्ञात्वा तु तस्य संकल्पं ब्रह्मा क्रूरतरं पुनः
—resolved once more to undertake austerity, mighty as he was; but knowing his fierce intention, Brahmā again—
आजगाम तदा तत्र यत्रासौ दितिनन्दनः उवाच तस्मै भगवान् प्रभुर्मधुरया गिरा
—then came there, where that son of Diti was; the blessed Lord spoke to him with gentle words.
