From their confusion arise, in Dvāpara again, loss of vision, death, and likewise diseases and afflictions.
From the sufferings of speech, mind, and action, disillusionment arises; from disillusionment, inquiry into liberation from suffering is born among them.
In inquiry arises detachment; from detachment, the perception of faults; and from perceiving faults, indeed, the arising of knowledge.
Among those intelligent ones, in the earlier Svāyambhuva interval on earth, there appeared, in Dvāpara, obstacles to the treatises.
There are variations of Āyurveda, of the limbs (auxiliaries), of Jyotiṣa, and also variations of Arthaśāstra and the analysis of reasoning (Hetuśāstra).
There are methods of Kalpasūtras, variations of commentarial sciences, divisions of Smṛti treatises, and separate schools.
In the Dvāpara ages, differences of opinion also arise among people; through mind, action, and speech, livelihood is attained with difficulty.
In Dvāpara, the time for all beings is said to be full of hardship: greed, instability, trade, war, and uncertainty about truths prevail.
There is the composition of Vedic treatises, the confusion of duties, the destruction of social classes and stages, and likewise desire and hatred.
When two thousand years are complete, that is then the highest lifespan for humans; at the end of Dvāpara, its twilight is from the fourth part.
Those devoid of virtue remain, and likewise, in the twilight of Dvāpara, only a portion of dharma stands established.
Now hear of the transition of Dvāpara and Puṣya; when only a remnant of Dvāpara remains, then comes the rise of Kali.
Violence, theft, falsehood, deceit, and hypocrisy among ascetics—these are the natural traits in Puṣya, and the people practice them.
This is called the complete dharma, but dharma declines by mind, deed, and word; dealings succeed or fail.
Kali is the destroyer, disease is constant, and there is always fear of hunger, drought, and upheaval among lands.
There is no stability in standards during the dreadful age of Puṣya and Kali; some die in the womb, others in youth.
In old age, in middle age, or in childhood, people die in Kali; they are weak in energy and strength, sinful, greatly angry, and unrighteous.
In Puṣya, people are addicted to false vows and greed, and are characterized by evil conduct, poor learning, bad behavior, and wicked ways.
Because of the faults in the actions of the Brahmins, fear arises among the people—violence, pride, envy, anger, jealousy, impatience, and lack of endurance.
In Puṣya, greed and delusion arise in all beings; great agitation is born when the age of Kali is reached.
The Vedas are not studied, nor are sacrifices performed by the twice-born; and thus, along with the Vaiśyas, the Kṣatriyas decline.
The source of mantras for the Śūdras is their connection with the Brahmins; in Kali, this occurs through sharing beds, seats, and meals.
Kings are mostly Śūdras, and heretical sects prevail; those in ochre robes without sacred threads, and those with skulls, are seen.
And others who take divine vows, those who corrupt dharma, and those who adopt sacred marks for livelihood—all these exist.
Such people arise in the Kali age; at that time, Śūdras, skilled in dharma and artha, study the Vedas.
Kings of Śūdra origin perform horse sacrifices, having killed women, children, and cows, and also slaying each other.
Having struck down one another, the people survive; suffering is abundant, lifespans are short, lands are destroyed, and disease prevails.
Attachment to unrighteousness and conduct of darkness are said to mark Kali; the killing of embryos among people does not occur as it did before.
Therefore, in the Kali age, lifespan, strength, and beauty decline; for those overwhelmed by suffering, the highest lifespan for humans is a hundred years.
And here, in the Kali age, the Vedas no longer remain in their entirety; likewise, sacrifices perish, existing only for the sake of righteousness.
