तस्मात्त्वं पुत्रि तपसः प्राप्स्यसे प्रेत्य तत्फलम् अष्टाविंशे भवित्री त्वं द्वापरे मत्स्ययोनिजा
'Therefore, daughter, you shall obtain the fruit of your austerity after death. In the twenty-eighth Dvapara, you will be born from the womb of a fish.'
व्यतिक्रमात्पितॄणां त्वं कष्टं कुलमवाप्स्यसि तस्माद्राज्ञो वसोः कन्या त्वम् अवश्यं भविष्यसि
'Because you transgressed the ancestors, you will experience hardship in your lineage. Therefore, you will certainly become the daughter of King Vasu.'
कन्या भूत्वा च लोकान्स्वान् पुनराप्स्यसि दुर्लभान् पराशरस्य वीर्येण पुत्रमेकमवाप्स्यसि
'Becoming a maiden, you will regain your own worlds, which are hard to attain. By the seed of Parashara, you will have a single son.'
द्वीपे तु बदरीप्राये बादरायणमच्युतम् स वेदमेकं बहुधा विभजिष्यति ते सुतः
'On the island called Badari, your son Badarayana, the steadfast one, will divide the single Veda into many parts.'
पौरवस्यात्मजौ द्वौ तु समुद्रांशस्य शंतनोः विचित्रवीर्यस्तनयस् तथा चित्राङ्गदो नृपः
'The two sons of the Paurava king, Shantanu, son of Samudramsa, will be born: Vicitravirya and the king Chitrangada.'
इमाव् उत्पाद्य तनयौ क्षेत्रजावस्य धीमतः प्रौष्ठपद्यष्टकारूपा पितृलोके भविष्यसि
'After producing these two sons for the wise Kshetraja, you will assume the form of Praushtapadi Ashtaka and dwell in the world of the ancestors.'
नाम्ना सत्यवती लोके पितृलोके तथाष्टका आयुरारोग्यदा नित्यं सर्वकामफलप्रदा
'You will be known in the world as Satyavati, and as Ashtaka in the world of the ancestors, always granting long life, health, and all desired fruits.'
भविष्यसि परे काले नदीत्वं च गमिष्यसि पुण्यतोषा सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा लोके ह्य् अच्छोदनामिका
'In a later time, you will become a river, the most excellent among rivers, called Achhoda, bringing merit and satisfaction in the world.'
इत्युक्त्वा स गणस्तेषां तत्रैवान्तरधीयत साप्यवाप च तत्सर्वं फलं यदुदितं पुरा
Having spoken thus, that group of ancestors disappeared right there, and she attained all the fruit that had been declared before.
विभ्राजा नाम चान्ये तु दिवि सन्ति सुवर्चसः लोका बर्हिषदो यत्र पितरः सन्ति सुव्रताः
There are also other radiant worlds in heaven called Vibhrāja, where the Barhishads, the virtuous ancestors, reside.
यत्र बर्हिणयुक्तानि विमानानि सहस्रशः संकल्प्या बर्हिषो यत्र तिष्ठन्ति फलदायिनः
There, thousands of aerial chariots adorned with sacred grass are imagined, where the Barhishads, who grant fruits, dwell.
यत्राभ्युदयशालासु मोदन्ते श्राद्धदायिनः यांश् च देवासुरगणा गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणाः
There, in halls of prosperity, those who give offerings to the ancestors rejoice, along with hosts of gods, asuras, gandharvas, and apsaras.
यक्षरक्षोगणाश्चैव यजन्ति दिवि देवताः पुलस्त्यपुत्राः शतशस् तपोयोगसमन्विताः
In heaven, hosts of Yakṣas and Rākṣasas, together with the gods, worship the sons of Pulastya by the hundreds, endowed with austerity and yoga.
महात्मानो महाभागा भक्तानामभयप्रदाः एतेषां पीवरी कन्या मानसी दिवि विश्रुता
Great-souled and highly fortunate, givers of fearlessness to devotees—among them, a renowned and noble-minded daughter was born in heaven.
योगिनी योगमाता च तपश्चक्रे सुदारुणम् प्रसन्नो भगवांस्तस्या वरं वव्रे तु सा हरेः
A yoginī and mother of yoga, she performed severe austerities; the blessed Lord, being pleased with her, granted her a boon, and she chose one from Hari.
योगवन्तं सुरूपं च भर्तारं विजितेन्द्रियम् देहि देव प्रसन्नस्त्वं पतिं मे वदतां वरम्
"Grant me, O God, a husband who is endowed with yoga, handsome, and master of his senses. You are pleased—give me as a husband the best among men."
उवाच देवो भविता व्यासपुत्रो यदा शुकः भविता तस्य भार्या त्वं योगाचार्यस्य सुव्रते
The Lord said: 'When Vyāsa's son Śuka is born, you shall become the wife of that teacher of yoga, O virtuous one.'
भविष्यति च ते कन्या कृत्वी नाम च योगिनी पाञ्चालाधिपतेर्देया मानुषस्य त्वया तदा
And you will have a daughter named Kṛtvī, a yoginī, who shall be given to the king of Pāñcāla by you, in human form, at that time.
जननी ब्रह्मदत्तस्य योगसिद्धा च गौः स्मृता कृष्णो गौरः प्रभुः शम्भुर् भविष्यन्ति च ते सुताः
You will be known as the mother of Brahmadatta, accomplished in yoga, and your sons will be Kṛṣṇa, Gaura, Prabhu, and Śambhu.
महात्मानो महाभागा गमिष्यन्ति परं पदम् तानुत्पाद्य पुनर् योगात् सवरा मोक्षमेष्यसि
Great-souled and highly fortunate, they will attain the supreme state; after giving birth to them, you will again, through yoga and with boons, attain liberation.
सुमूर्तिमन्तः पितरो वसिष्ठस्य सुताः स्मृताः नाम्ना तु मानसाः सर्वे सर्वे ते धर्ममूर्तयः
The sons of Vasiṣṭha are remembered as ancestors with excellent forms, all called Mānasas by name, and all embodiments of righteousness.
ज्योतिर्भासिषु लोकेषु ये वसन्ति दिवः परम् विराजमानाः क्रीडन्ति यत्र ते श्राद्धदायिनः
In the radiant worlds where they dwell in the highest heaven, shining forth, they play—those who receive offerings during śrāddha rites.
सर्वकामसमृद्धेषु विमानेष्वपि पादजाः किं पुनः श्राद्धदा विप्रा भक्तिमन्तः क्रियान्विताः
Even those born from the feet reside in aerial chariots filled with every desired enjoyment; how much more so the devoted and ritual-performing Brāhmaṇas who offer śrāddha?
गौर् नाम कन्या येषां तु मानसी दिवि राजते शुक्रस्य दयिता पत्नी साध्यानां कीर्तिवर्धिनी
Among them, the daughter named Gaur, born of the mind, shines in heaven—beloved wife of Śukra and famed among the Sādhyas.
मरीचिगर्भा नाम्ना तु लोका मार्तण्डमण्डले पितरो यत्र तिष्ठन्ति हविष्मन्तो ऽङ्गिरःसुताः
The worlds called Marīcigarbhā, within the orb of the sun, are where the ancestors, sons of Aṅgiras, who partake of oblations, reside.
तीर्थश्राद्धप्रदा यान्ति ये च क्षत्रियसत्तमाः राज्ञां तु पितरस्ते वै स्वर्गमोक्षफलप्रदाः
Those noble Kṣatriyas who give śrāddha at sacred fords—these are the ancestors of kings, bestowers of the fruits of heaven and liberation.
एतेषां मानसी कन्या यशोदा लोकविश्रुता पत्नी ह्य् अंशुमतः श्रेष्ठा स्नुषा पञ्चजनस्य च
Among them, the mind-born daughter Yaśodā, renowned in the worlds, became the chief wife of Aṃśumat and daughter-in-law of Pañcajana.
जनन्यथ दिलीपस्य भगीरथपितामही लोकाः कामदुघा नाम कामभोगफलप्रदाः
She was also the mother of Dilīpa and grandmother of Bhagīratha; the worlds called Kāmadughā are known as bestowers of desired enjoyments.
सुस्वधा नाम पितरो यत्र तिष्ठन्ति सुव्रताः आज्यपा नाम लोकेषु कर्दमस्य प्रजापतेः
Where the virtuous ancestors named Susvadhā dwell, there too are the worlds called Ājyapā, belonging to Kardama, the progenitor.
पुलहाङ्गजदायादा वैश्यास्तान्भावयन्ति च यत्र श्राद्धकृतः सर्वे पश्यन्ति युगपद्गताः
The descendants of Pulaha and Aṅgiras, who are Vaiśyas, honor them; there, all who perform śrāddha see them simultaneously as they depart.
