When the sun had set in Tripura, the sound of anklets and girdles, tightly bound and adorned with fresh flowers, filled the air, mingling with the calls of cuckoos.
Some women, embraced by their lovers, with hair standing on end, their lovely tears budding like fresh shoots watered by new rain, resembled the earth newly moistened.
In the splendid palaces, adorned by the moon's rays, the noble women, with their sweet-sounding ornaments, resounded greatly, equal to Madana in passion.
Exhausted by drinking, one woman, longing for her beloved, says, 'Why do you smell my cheek so much? Climb onto my broad, full, and high hips, adorned with a golden girdle.'
On the streets illuminated by the rising moon, and on the broad royal roads, the Daitya women, moving in groups, shine like stars at dusk around the moon.
Amidst bursts of laughter and the waving of fly-whisks, others, swaying from intoxication, move with playful smiles; the girdle, with its subtle sound, speaks out.
This is the turn of the beautiful women adorned with unfading garlands, who are joyful; their voices, as refined as polished metal, are heard, and elsewhere, the sounds of swans echo in the ponds.
The girdle with its ornaments, together with the fragrance of their bodies, and the moods inspired by that fragrance, break the beloved abodes of the demon women, which are dear to the arrows of Kama.
Clad in colorful garments, with loosened hair, swaying gracefully, the demon women shone, adorned with beautiful attire and ornaments, like the moon among the stars.
Because of the swaying, with loosened threads and fallen girdles, scattered jewels, the ground beneath the swings appears splendid, made diverse by those ornaments, just as the moon's side is adorned with varied features.
In the evening, with moonlight and gardens, among the calls of groups of cuckoos, Kama, his arrows spent, wandered in the city of the demons.
Then the moon, white as garlands of jasmine flowers, lacking the spread of moonlight, resembling a cloud, does not shine when obscured; likewise, when fortune is lost, a wealthy man becomes pale.
Surpassing the moon's radiance with his reddish charioteer, the sun, with a disk like heated gold, stands at the peak of his rising, shining greatly in the sky, striving to cross the darkness-bearing waters.
When the thousand-rayed sun rose on Meru, the shining sun, the entire host of gods roared, like the ocean at the end of the age.
Then the thousand-eyed god, Indra, Purandara, together with Savitṛ, Varuṇa, and Hara, went to Tripura.
Those destroyers, of many forms, advanced with fierce lion-like roars and the sounds of drums.
Then, with drums and parasols, and great trees, that divine army moved like a forest stirred.
Seeing the fierce, immense army of Rudra approaching, the lords of the demons were greatly agitated, resembling the ocean.
They held spears, javelins, tridents, clubs, axes, bows, arrows, thunderbolts, and heavy maces.
Grasping them, their eyes red with anger, they were like winged mountains, striking with mountain-breaking clouds at the end of the heat.
Adorned with lightning, the sons of Diti, delighted, assembled with the gods, the enemies of the gods.
Among those whose minds were set on dying, uncertain in victory, the weak army was like a body with feeble limbs.
Roaring like clouds, with brilliance like clouds, skilled in battle, they fought, bearing offenses against each other.
Smoking and blazing with weapons shining like the moon, driven by anger and eager for battle, they struck each other.
Some fall, struck by thunderbolts; others, pierced by arrows; still others, torn apart by discus weapons, fall into the waters of the ocean.
With garlands and great ornaments cut, their garments and jewels scattered, the gods fall, battered, among the hosts of whales and crocodiles.
Everywhere, blows from maces, pestles, javelins, axes, thunderbolts, spears, lances, and swords rain down.
A great flood of weapons—mountain peaks, trees, hurled in wrath by swift and smoky, radiant demons—also falls into the surging ocean.
By those weapons, hurled with increasing force by gods and demons, a great destruction is wrought, causing the stars to tremble.
Just as in the battle of small elephants there is destruction, so too, among the hosts of gods and demons, was there a slaughter of whales and crocodiles.
