Hearing that Tāraka was crushed, the Pramathas, their eyes and bodies brimming with joy, roared like rainclouds, their eyes blazing like the sun and fire.
Hearing these words of his friend, Maya, adorned with a golden garland, spoke on the battlefield to Vidyunmālī, whose form was like a dark collyrium mountain and who wore a new moon-crested diadem.
O Vidyunmālī, now is not the time for us to act carelessly; I will, with valor, make this city free from calamity.
Then Vidyunmālī, enraged, and Maya, lord of Tripura, together with the great Asuras, struck down the foremost Gaṇas.
Wherever Vidyunmālī and Maya went, there the cities were emptied by the blows of the Pramathas.
Then, with the sounds of drums of Yama and Varuṇa, the resounding of paṇavas and ḍiṇḍimas, and the clapping of hands with lion-like roars, the gods worshipped Bhava and stood ready.
Honored by the mighty Daityas, radiant with power like a thousand suns, and praised by the truth-abiding, ascetic sages, he shone like the sun approaching the mountain at sunset.
After Tāraka was slain in battle and the Pramathas were driven away, Maya, filled with fear, addressed the Dānavas again and again.
O lords of the Asuras, now all of you listen to what I say—what must be done by me and by you, O mighty ones.
When the star Puṣya arrives in due time and the moon, whose face is like the moon, comes, then for a single moment all three cities will become one.
Act without fear at the appointed time, as signaled by the call of the cuckoo; that time, joined with the Pushya constellation and the city, has been determined by me.
Whoever, at that time in the city, attempts to gather a group together—let him be reduced to powder by a single powerful arrow from a god.
Whatever is your life, your strength, and your enmity with the gods—hold all this in your hearts and protect this city.
With all your might, turn aside the single, fearsome chariot of Maheshvara, so that he cannot release his arrow.
When we have done this to defend Tripura, the gods, powerless, will have to wait for the Pushya conjunction.
Hearing Maya speak thus, the Daityas dwelling in Tripura, roaring like lions again and again, addressed Maya, who was like Maya himself.
With effort, we all will do as you have said; we will act so that Rudra cannot release his arrow in the city.
Today we will go to battle, eager to slay Rudra—so spoke the sons of Diti, delighted, their hair standing on end.
Either Tripura will remain established in the sky for an age, eternal and unshakable, or the threefold path of Narayana will come to pass, and there will be no more Danavas.
We will not abandon dharma, in which you will engage us; men will not see a world without gods or without Daityas.
Thus, after conferring together, those delighted lords of the city, enemies of the gods, at dusk, rejoicing, took up the duties of love's spies.
Again and again, the great jewel, the moon, wandered to the eastern peak, dispelling the darkness, and the blessed moon expanded in the sky.
Just as a swan adorned with lotuses sits in a vast lake, and as a great lion rests upon a peak of lapis lazuli,
Or like a broad pearl necklace resting on Vishnu's chest, so the moon, born from Atri's eye, immersed in the sky, shines, illuminating the worlds, forcefully pouring out the nectar of moonlight.
As the cool-rayed moon rose and filled the city with light, the Asuras, at dusk, made their homes and themselves charming.
On the streets, royal roads, palaces, and houses, lamps shone with the color of champaka flowers, lit with little oil.
Then, in their monasteries, those lamps, filled with oil, were kindled; their houses were full of wealth, made entirely of gems, and the shining lamps illuminated them like planets at the moon's rising.
Illuminated by the moon's rays and bright with inner lamps, the darkness in Tripura was consumed like a family beset by calamities.
In that city, at the youthful twilight, as the moon laughed with its bright beams, the desire-driven Daityas lingered long in their homes with their beloved women.
Those who were stirred by the five arrows of the Bull-bannered god were now pierced by the god with the fish-banner; among the foremost Asuras, their own women, heated with passion, became flushed.
