सुगुह्यम् अपि दैत्यानां नास्त्यस्याविदितं भुवि यत्र मद्वरकौशल्यं विज्ञातं न वृतं बुधैः

Even the most secret matters of the Daityas are not unknown on earth, where my skill in granting boons is recognized, though not sought by the wise.

समो ऽयं रुचिरो देशो निर्द्रुमो निर्द्रुमाचलः नवाम्भःपूरितं कृत्वा बाधन्ते ऽस्मान्मरुद्गणाः

This place is level and beautiful, devoid of trees and mountains; after filling it with fresh water, the hosts of winds are afflicting us.

ते यूयं यदि मन्यध्वं सागरोपरिधिष्ठिताः प्रमथानां महावेगं सहामः श्वसनोपमम्

If you think you can withstand the mighty force of the Pramathas, stationed at the ocean's boundary, comparable to the breath of wind—

एतेषां च समारम्भास् तस्मिन्सागरसम्प्लवे निरुत्साहा भविष्यन्ति एतद्रथपथावृताः

Their attacks, during the flooding of the ocean, will lose enthusiasm, being blocked by the paths of chariots.

युध्यतां निघ्नतां शत्रून् भीतानां च द्रविष्यताम् सागरो ऽम्बरसंकाशः शरणं नो भविष्यति

For those fighting, slaying enemies, and fleeing in fear, the ocean, resembling the sky, will be our refuge.

इत्युक्त्वा स मयो दैत्यो दैत्यानामधिपस्तदा त्रिपुरेण ययौ तूर्णं सागरं सिन्धुबान्धवम्

Having spoken thus, Maya, the Daitya, lord of the Daityas, swiftly went with Tripura to the ocean, the kin of rivers.

सागरे जलगम्भीर उत्पपात पुरं वरम् अवतस्थुः पुराण्येव गोपुराभरणानि च

In the ocean, with its deep waters, the splendid city rose up, and the ancient fortifications and tower ornaments remained as before.

अपक्रान्ते तु त्रिपुरे त्रिपुरारिस्त्रिलोचनः पितामहमुवाचेदं वेदवादविशारदम्

When the three cities had departed, the enemy of Tripura, the three-eyed one, spoke to Brahmā, who was skilled in Vedic lore.

पितामह दृढं भीता भगवन्दानवा हि नः विपुलं सागरं ते तु दानवाः समुपाश्रिताः

O Grandfather, the Dānavas are truly terrified, O Blessed One; those Dānavas have taken refuge in your vast ocean.

यत एव हि ते यातास् त्रिपुरेण तु दानवाः तत एव रथं तूर्णं प्रापयस्व पितामह

Since the Dānavas have gone with Tripura, therefore, Grandfather, quickly bring the chariot from there.

सिंहनादं ततः कृत्वा देवा देवरथं च तम् परिवार्य ययुर्हृष्टाः सायुधाः पश्चिमोदधिम्

Then, after letting out a lion's roar, the gods, delighted and armed, surrounded that divine chariot and went toward the western ocean.

ततो ऽमरामरगुरुं परिवार्य भवं हरम् नर्दयन्तो ययुस्तूर्णं सागरं दानवालयम्

Then, encircling Bhava, the preceptor of gods and demons, the gods advanced swiftly, roaring, toward the ocean, the abode of the Dānavas.

अमरवरपुरे ऽपि दारुणो जलधररावमृदङ्गगह्वरः दनुतनयनिनादमिश्रितः प्रतिनिधिसंक्षुभिताणवोपमः

Even in the splendid city of the immortals, a dreadful tumult arose, echoing with the sound of drums and clouds, mingled with the cries of women, resembling the agitation of the underworld.

अथ भुवनपतिर्गतिः सुराणाम् अरिमृगयाम् अददात्सुलब्धबुद्धिः त्रिदशगणपतिर्ह्युवाच शक्रं त्रिपुरगतं सहसा निरीक्ष्य शत्रुम्

Then the Lord of the Worlds, the leader of the gods, intent on seeking out the enemy, spoke to Indra, having quickly seen the foe who had gone to Tripura.

त्रिदशगणपते निशामयैतत् त्रिपुरनिकेतनं दानवाः प्रविष्टाः यमवरुणकुबेरषण्मुखैस्तत् सह गणपैरपि हन्मि तावदेव

O Lord of the hosts of gods, observe this: the Dānavas have entered the dwelling of Tripura. Along with Yama, Varuṇa, Kubera, and Ṣaṇmukha and their hosts, I will destroy them at once.

विहितपरबलाभिघातभूतं व्रज जलधेस्तु यतः पुराणि तस्थुः स रथवरगतो भवः समर्थो ह्य् उदधिमगात्त्रिपुरं पुनर्निहन्तुम्

Go, for the destruction of the enemy has been arranged; the ancient cities stand upon the ocean. Mounted on the excellent chariot, Bhava, capable, went again to the ocean to destroy Tripura.

इति परिगणयन्तो दितेः सुता ह्य् अवतस्थुर्लवणार्णवोपरिष्टात् अभिभवत्रिपुरं सदानवेन्द्रं शरवर्षैर्मुसलैश्च वज्रमिश्रैः

Thus, counting their forces, the sons of Diti stood above the salty ocean, attacking Tripura and its lord with showers of arrows, clubs, and thunderbolts.

अहमपि रथवर्यमास्थितः सुरवरवर्य भवेय पृष्ठतः असुरवरवधार्थमुद्यतानां प्रतिविदधामि सुखाय ते ऽनघ

I too, mounted on the excellent chariot, O best of the gods, will follow behind you. For the destruction of the best of the Asuras, I will act for your happiness, O sinless one.

इति भववचनप्रचोदिते दशशतनयनवपुः समुद्यतः त्रिपुरपुरजिघांसया हरिः प्रविकसिताम्बुजलोचनो ययौ

Thus urged by Bhava's words, Hari, assuming the form of the son of Daśaśata, his lotus eyes wide with the desire to destroy the city of Tripura, set out.

मघवा तु निहन्तुं तानसुरानमरेश्वरः लोकपाला ययुः सर्वे गणपालाश्च सर्वशः

Then Maghavan, the lord of the immortals, went to destroy those Asuras, and all the guardians of the worlds and the leaders of the hosts went as well.

ईश्वरा मोदिताः सर्व उत्पेतुश्चाम्बरे तदा खगतास्तु विरेजुस्ते पक्षवन्त इवाचलाः

All the lords, delighted, then rose into the sky; moving through the air, they shone like winged mountains.

प्रययुस्तत्पुरं हन्तुं शरीरमिव व्याधयः शङ्खाडम्बरनिर्घोषैः पणवान्पटहानपि नादयन्तः पुरो देवा दृष्टास्त्रिपुरवासिभिः

They went to destroy that city, like diseases attacking a body, sounding conches and drums and many other instruments, so that the gods were seen by the inhabitants of Tripura.

हरः प्राप्त इतीवोक्त्वा बलिनस्ते महासुराः आजग्मुः परमं क्षोभम् अत्ययेष्विव सागराः

Saying, 'Hara has arrived,' those mighty great Asuras were seized by great agitation, like the oceans during cataclysms.

सुरतूर्यरवं श्रुत्वा दानवा भीमदर्शनाः निनेदुर्वादयन्तश्च नानावाद्यान्यनेकशः

Hearing the sound of the divine drums, the Dānavas, terrifying in appearance, roared and played many different instruments in response.

भूयोदीरितवीर्यास्ते परस्परकृतागसः पूर्वदेवाश्च देवाश्च सूदयन्तः परस्परम्

Those who had previously displayed their strength, both former gods and present gods, now, having wronged each other, began to destroy one another.

आक्रोशे ऽपि समप्रख्ये तेषां देहनिकृन्तनम् प्रवृत्तं युद्धमतुलं प्रहारकृतनिःस्वनम्

Even as they shouted at each other with equal fury, a fierce and unparalleled battle began among them, severing bodies with the clamor of weapons.

निष्पतन्त इवादित्याः प्रज्वलन्त इवाग्नयः शंसन्त इव नागेन्द्रा भ्रमन्त एव पक्षिणः गिरीन्द्रा इव कम्पन्तो गर्जन्त इव तोयदाः

They advanced like blazing suns, like fires burning bright, roaring like great serpents, whirling like birds, shaking like lordly mountains, and thundering like storm clouds.

जृम्भन्त इव शार्दूलाः गर्जन्त इव तोयदाः प्रवृद्धोर्मितरंगौघाः क्षुभ्यन्त इव सागराः

They yawned like lions, thundered like rain clouds, surged with swelling waves like the ocean, and were agitated like the sea itself.

प्रमथाश्च महाशूरा दानवाश्च महाबलाः युयुधुर्निश्चला भूत्वा वज्रा इव महाचलैः

The mighty Pramathas and the powerful Dānavas fought steadfastly, like thunderbolts striking great mountains.
