नूपुरारावरम्याणि त्रिपुरे तत्पुराण्यपि स्वर्गातिरिक्तश्रीकाणि तत्र कन्यापुराणि च
The cities within Tripura were delightful with anklet sounds, possessing splendor surpassing heaven; there were also cities of maidens there.
आरामैश्च विहारैश्च तडागवटचत्वरैः सरोभिश्च सरिद्भिश्च वनैश्चोपवनैरपि
With gardens, pleasure grounds, ponds, banyan courtyards, lakes, rivers, forests, and groves as well.
दिव्यभोगोपभोगानि नानारत्नयुतानि च पुष्पोत्करैश्च सुभगास् त्रिपुरस्योपनिर्गमाः परिखाशतगम्भीराः कृता मायानिवारणैः
Divine enjoyments and pleasures, adorned with various jewels, and beautiful heaps of flowers; Tripura's exits were deep moats by the hundred, constructed as magical defenses.
निशम्य तद्दुर्गविधानमुत्तमं कृतं मयेनाद्भुतवीर्यकर्मणा दितेः सुता दैवतराजवैरिणः सहस्रशः प्रापुरनन्तविक्रमाः
Hearing of that excellent fortress, built by Maya with wondrous skill, the sons of Diti—enemies of the gods and kings—thousands strong, possessing boundless valor, arrived.
तदासुरैर्दर्पितवैरिमर्दनैर् जनार्दनैः शैलकरीन्द्रसंनिभैः बभूव पूर्णं त्रिपुरं तथा पुरा यथाम्बरं भूरिजलैर् जलप्रदैः
Then, the Asuras, proud and crushing their foes, filled Tripura, resembling mountain elephants; just as the sky is filled with abundant waters by rain-bearing clouds.
निर्मिते त्रिपुरे दुर्गे मयेनासुरशिल्पिना तद्दुर्गं दुर्गतां प्राप बद्धवैरैः सुरासुरैः
When Tripura's fortress was built by Maya, the Asura architect, that fortress became a place of refuge for the gods and Asuras bound by enmity.
सकलत्राः सपुत्राश्च शस्त्रवन्तो ऽन्तकोपमाः मयादिष्टानि विविशुर् गृहाणि हृषिताश्च ते
With their wives and sons, armed and fierce as Death, those instructed by Maya entered the houses, and they were joyful.
सिंहा वनमिवानेके मकरा इव सागरम् रोषैश्चैवातिपारुष्यैः शरीरमिव संहतैः
Many lions as in a forest, crocodiles as in the ocean, and with intense anger and harshness, bodies gathered together.
तद्वद्बलिभिरध्यस्तं तत्पुरं देवतारिभिः त्रिपुरं संकुलं जातं दैत्यकोटिशताकुलम्
Likewise, the city was occupied by powerful enemies of the gods; Tripura became crowded, teeming with tens of millions of Daityas.
सुतलादपि निष्पत्य पातालाद्दानवालयात् उपतस्थुः पयोदाभा ये च गिर्युपजीविनः
Emerging from Sutala, from the abode of the Danavas in the netherworld, and those who lived by the mountains, they assembled, resembling clouds.
यो यं प्रार्थयते कामं सम्प्राप्तस्त्रिपुराश्रयात् तस्य तस्य मयस्तत्र मायया विदधाति सः
Whatever desire anyone sought, once attained through refuge in Tripura, Maya fulfilled it for each by his magic.
सचन्द्रेषु प्रदोषेषु साम्बुजेषु सरःसु च आरामेषु सचूतेषु तपोधनवनेषु च
On moonlit evenings, among lotuses in lakes, in gardens with mango trees, and in forests of ascetics.
स्वङ्गाश्चन्दनदिग्धाङ्गां मातंगाः समदा इव मृष्टाभरणवस्त्राश्च मृष्टस्रगनुलेपनाः
Their own bodies were smeared with sandalwood paste; elephants, intoxicated, adorned with splendid ornaments and garments, with beautiful garlands and unguents.
प्रियाभिः प्रियक्रामाभिर् हावभावप्रसूतिभिः नारीभिः सततं रेमुर् मुदिताश्चैव दानवाः
With beloved women, skilled in pleasing acts and gestures, the Daityas always delighted, rejoicing with their dear ones.
मयेन निर्मिते स्थाने मोदमाना महासुराः अर्थे धर्मे च कामे च निदधुस्ते मतीः स्वयम्
In the place built by Maya, the great Asuras, rejoicing, devoted their minds to wealth, righteousness, and desire, of their own accord.
तेषां त्रिपुरयुक्तानां त्रिपुरे त्रिदशारिणाम् व्रजति स्म सुखं कालः स्वर्गस्थानां यथा तथा
For those joined with Tripura, the enemies of the gods, time passed happily in Tripura, just as it does for those dwelling in heaven.
शुश्रूषन्ते पितॄन्पुत्राः पत्न्यश्चापि पतींस्तथा विमुक्तकलहाश्चापि प्रीतयः प्रचुराभवन्
Sons attended to their fathers, and wives likewise to their husbands; free from quarrels, abundant affection prevailed.
नाधर्मस्त्रिपुरस्थानां बाधते वीर्यवानपि अर्चयन्तो दितेः पुत्रास् त्रिपुरायतने हरम्
No unrighteousness afflicted the inhabitants of Tripura, even those of great strength; the sons of Diti worshipped Hara in the temple of Tripura.
पुण्याहशब्दानुच्चेरुर् आशीर्वादांश्च वेदगान् स्वनूपुररवोन्मिश्रान् वेणुवीणारवानपि
Auspicious day proclamations were loudly uttered, blessings and Vedic chants resounded, mingled with the ringing of anklets and the sounds of flutes and lutes.
हासश्च वरनारीणां चित्तव्याकुलकारकः त्रिपुरे दानवेन्द्राणां रमतां श्रूयते सदा
The laughter of excellent women, which stirred the hearts, was always heard in Tripura, delighting the lords of the Daityas.
तेषामर्चयतां देवान् ब्राह्मणांश्च नमस्यताम् धर्मार्थकाममन्त्राणां महान्कालो ऽभ्यवर्तत
As they worshipped the gods and honored the Brahmins, a great period passed for them, reciting mantras for virtue, wealth, and desire.
अथालक्ष्मीरसूया च तृड्बुभुक्षे तथैव च कलिश्च कलहश्चैव त्रिपुरं विविशुः सह
Then misfortune, jealousy, thirst, hunger, as well as strife and quarrel, together entered Tripura.
संध्याकालं प्रविष्टास्ते त्रिपुरं च भयावहाः समध्यासुः समं घोराः शरीराणि यथामयाः
They entered at twilight, bringing fear to Tripura; these dreadful ones mingled among the people, just as diseases enter bodies.
सर्व एते विशन्तस्तु मयेन त्रिपुरान्तरम् स्वप्ने भयावहा दृष्टा आविशन्तस्तु दानवान्
All these, entering the inner city of Tripura by Maya, appeared to the Daityas in dreams as terrifying forms, and then entered them.
उदिते च सहस्रांशौ शुभभासाकरे रवौ मयः सभामाविवेश भास्कराभ्यामिवाम्बुदः
When the thousand-rayed sun, the source of auspicious light, had risen, Maya entered the assembly hall, like a cloud before the two suns.
मेरुकूटनिभे रम्य आसने स्वर्णमण्डिते आसीनाः काञ्चनगिरेः शृङ्गे तोयमुचो यथा
On a splendid seat, adorned with gold, resembling the peak of Meru, they sat as if on the summit of a golden mountain from which waters flow.
पार्श्वयोस्तारकाख्यश्च विद्युन्माली च दानवः उपविष्टौ मयस्यान्ते हस्तिनः कलभाविव
At his sides sat the Daityas named Tāraka and Vidyunmālī, beside Maya, like young elephants beside the lord of elephants.
ततः सुरारयः सर्वे ऽशेषकोपा रणाजिरे उपविष्टा दृढं विद्धा दानवा देवशत्रवः
Then all the enemies of the gods, filled with unrestrained anger, sat firmly in the assembly, the Daityas, adversaries of the gods, wounded in battle.
तेष्वासीनेषु सर्वेषु सुखासनगतेषु च मयो मायाविजनक इत्युवाच स दानवान्
When all were seated comfortably, Maya, the originator of illusions, addressed the Daityas thus.
खेचराः खेचरारावा भो भो दाक्षायणीसुताः निशामयध्वं स्वप्नो ऽयं मया दृष्टो भयावहः
"O sky-roaming ones, O sons of Daksha's daughter, listen! I have seen a terrifying dream."
