Uttanapada is to be known as its upper jaw, Yajna as the lower; Dharma is established on its head.
Narayana is in its heart, the Sadhyas and Ashvins at its forefeet, Varuna and Aryaman at its hind thighs.
The year is to be known at its genital, Mitra at the anus; at the tail are Agni, Mahendra, Marichi, Kashyapa, and Dhruva.
This is the starry pillar, which neither sets nor rises, along with the constellations, the Moon, the Sun, the planets, and the host of stars.
All of them, facing toward that, stand in the sky like a wheel, established by Dhruva, and they circumambulate Dhruva alone.
They revolve around Dhruva, the foremost among the gods, who is fixed in the heavens as a pillar; for the Agnīdhra and Kāśyapa people, he is the supreme Dhruva.
This one alone moves, taking the wheel of the stars at the summit between the ends of Meru, drawing it downward, gazing upon Meru, and proceeds in a circle.
All that you have spoken has been heard completely; how do the abodes of the gods exist? Describe again the luminaries.
I will explain all this—the course of the sun and moon, and how the abodes of the gods exist, just as for the sun and moon.
At the dawn of fire, during the night, by Brahman, whose origin is unmanifest, this undifferentiated world existed, covered by night’s darkness.
When only the four elements remained, and Brahman presided over them, the self-born Lord was there, accomplishing the purpose of the world and its principles.
Taking the form of a blazing fire, he wandered, contemplating manifestation; knowing fire from the beginning of the cycle, he resorted to water and earth.
Having gathered it for the sake of illumination, he became threefold again: the one who cooks in this world, earthly, is called Agni.
He who shines in the sun is remembered as pure Agni; the lightning, the digestive fire, the lunar fire, and the fire without fuel are also Agni.
Some are ignited by brilliance, some are indeed without fuel; the fire produced by rubbing wood is extinguished by water.
The fire that has flames and cooks is Agni, lacking brilliance, with lunar qualities; the one in the white orb, without heat, does not shine.
The solar radiance, by its foot, goes to set in the sun; at night it enters Agni, therefore Agni shines.
When the sun rises again, the heat of Agni enters it by its foot, and the brilliance of Agni, thus, burns during the day.
Both brightness and heat, solar and fiery, are replenished day and night by their mutual interpenetration.
In the northern half of the earth, and likewise in the southern, when the sun rises again, night enters the waters.
Therefore, the waters become coppery from the alternation of day and night; when the sun sets again, the waters enter the day.
Therefore, at night, the waters appear white and shining; by this sequence, in the northern and southern halves of the earth.
Here, with sunrise and sunset, day and night enter into the waters; and that sun who shines drinks up the waters with his rays.
That fire, fierce and with a thousand feet, resembling a red pitcher, draws in the waters by means of a thousand channels all around.
The waters from rivers, oceans, lakes, and wells—by his thousand rays, there is the outflow of cold, rain, and heat.
Of these, four hundred channels pour forth, having various forms—some fragrant like sandalwood, some pure, some bearing signs, and some conscious.
All the rays that produce rain are immortal and life-giving; they arise from cold, and among them, thirty rays are said to be mutually connected, and all the rays of the sun are drunk by the moon, stars, and planets.
Among these, some are central, others delightful, producing cold; some are white, some are directions, and some are cows, and some are creators of all beings.
All these thirty rays, known by name as white, produce heat; all of them nourish humans, gods, and ancestors.
Humans with plants, and ancestors with oblations, and all the gods with nectar are continually satisfied by these rays.
