In the Dvāpara ages, the seven sages known as Prajauṣaṇi were born here; they shunned procreation, and thus they conquered death.
Of those celibate sages, eighty-four thousand in number, the path of water does not reach its end, even up to the dissolution of beings.
Through their union, by abstaining from sexual intercourse, by the cessation of envy and hatred, and by refraining from harming living beings,
Then, by recognizing the faults in union with others, in sound and the like, and through these pure causes, they indeed attained immortality.
The immortality of those who remain until the dissolution of beings is to be understood; for the duration of the three worlds is not for those who go the path of death.
The results, whether sin or merit, equal to acts like abortion or the horse sacrifice, are exhausted at the end of the dissolution of beings for those of upward-flowing seed.
But above them are the sages, where the steadfast Dhruva abides; this is the divine third radiant realm of Viṣṇu in the sky.
Having reached that highest abode of Viṣṇu, they do not grieve; but those who desire the world remain fixed in the realm of Dhruva through righteousness.
Having heard this divine story, I asked Lomaharṣaṇa about the course of the sun and moon, and of all the planets.
How do these luminaries move within the solar orb, all in order and without confusion?
Who causes them to revolve, or do they move by themselves? We wish to know this, so tell us, O best of the good.
Understand this bewilderment of beings as I explain it; even what is seen directly bewilders people.
He who is established among the fourteen stars as the dolphin, the son of Uttānapāda, that Dhruva who stands firm in the sky,
He, revolving, causes the sun and moon to revolve along with the planets; the stars follow his movement like a wheel.
The host of luminaries that moves by the mind of Dhruva is bound to Dhruva by bonds made of wind and moves forth.
Their separation and conjunction, as well as the determination of time, risings and settings, and portents, and the southern and northern solstices,
The equinox, the color of the planets—all this is caused by Dhruva. Those clouds called Jīmūtas are the source of living beings.
The second is the inviting wind; those clouds take refuge in it, and at a distance of a yojana and a half, they are also divided.
The creation of rain among them is described as a continuous downpour; those clouds called Puṣkarāvartakas arise from the wings.
By Indra, the wings of those clouds, which were abundant, wish-fulfilling, and powerful, were cut off with great force, as they sought the destruction of beings.
Your wings are called Puṣkarā, vast and water-bearing; they are named Puṣkarāvartakā for this reason.
They assume various forms and have terrifying sounds; they bring the rains at the end of an age and restrain the fire of dissolution.
Supported by the wind, they move, immortal and fulfilling the course of the age; when the cosmic egg was broken, these were its natural products.
From which Brahmā, the self-born Lord with four faces, arose—those very shell fragments of the egg are all declared to be clouds.
Their nourishment is smoke, without exception; among them, Parjanya is the best, along with the four elephants of the directions.
The families of elephants, mountains, and clouds, together with serpents, are of one kind, divided in two; their single origin is said to be water.
Parjanya and the elephants of the directions, in winter, produce cold-born frost and rain for the increase of crops.
The sixth, called Parivaha, is the wind that is their support, who, as the Lord, bears the Ganges moving through the sky.
That sacred, divine, nectar-like water, renowned as Tripathā, its trembling drops are scattered by the elephants of the directions with their broad hands.
They release droplets, which are called mist; to the south is the mountain known as Hemakūṭa.
