Mahatī is spoken of as the seventh, and this is also called Dhṛti; from these, hundreds and thousands of other rivers arise.
Those rivers flow to where Indra rains; thus the arrangement of Kuśadvīpa has been described for you.
The extent of Śākadvīpa has been declared, which is eternal; Kuśadvīpa is surrounded by the ocean of clarified butter and water.
All around, the great island is encircled like the moon; in breadth and circumference, it is considered twice the size of the milk ocean.
Next, I shall describe Krauñca-dvīpa; its extent is twice that of Kuśa-dvīpa.
The ocean of clarified butter and water surrounds Krauñca-dvīpa, encircling it completely in the shape and measure of a wheel's rim.
In that dvīpa, the foremost mountains are found; Devana is named as a mountain, and beyond Devana is Govinda, another mountain.
Beyond Govinda is Krauñca, the first mountain; beyond Krauñca is Pāvanaka, and beyond Pāvanaka is Andhakāraka.
Beyond Andhakāraka is Devāvṛt, a mountain by name; and beyond Devāvṛt is Puṇḍarīka, the great mountain.
These seven mountains of Krauñca-dvīpa are made of gems; each varṣa-mountain is twice the breadth of the previous.
I shall now tell you the names of its regions; listen: Krauñca's region is Kuśala, and Vāmana's is Manonuga.
Beyond Manonuga is Uṣṇa, the third region so called; beyond Uṣṇa is Pāvanaka, and beyond Pāvanaka is Andhakāraka.
From Andhakāraka's region is Munideśa, and beyond Munideśa is Dundubhisvana, so it is said.
There, the people are pure, mostly fair, mingled with Siddhas and Cāraṇas; the rivers heard of there are auspicious, flowing through each region.
Gaurī, Kumudvatī, Saṃdhyā, Rātri, Manojavā, Khyātī, and Puṇḍarīkā, as well as Gaṅgā, are remembered as sevenfold.
Thousands of other rivers flow nearby and along their banks; these rivers are numerous and abundant in water.
The nature of these regions, in all their succession, cannot be fully described even in hundreds of years.
The creation and destruction of beings there—now I shall tell you further, listen about Śālmalī.
Śālmalī-dvīpa is twice the extent of Krauñca-dvīpa, and it is surrounded by the ocean of curd and water.
There, the settlements are virtuous; people die only after a long time, and famine never occurs, for they are endowed with the strength of earth and energy.
The first mountain, shining like the sun, is called Sumanā; the middle one is yellow, and then comes a mountain made of pots.
Named Sarvasukha, endowed with divine herbs, is the third mountain; and the golden mountain, resembling the wings of a bee, is also there.
There is a great and divine mountain named Rohita, truly a splendid peak; the land there is pleasant, skillful, and brings forth happiness and well-being.
The third Rohita, renowned as Rohiṇa, is where many jewels are found, and Indra himself protects them.
With Prajāpati present and pleased, he himself arranges everything; there, clouds do not rain, nor is there cold or heat as elsewhere.
In the three islands, there is no talk of castes or life-stages; there are no planets, nor is there a moon, nor envy, jealousy, or fear.
There, plants, waters, and mountain springs abound; food of six tastes is present for them, appearing on its own.
Among them there is neither low nor high, neither greed nor possession; the people are healthy, strong, and enjoy perfect happiness.
For thirty thousand years, they remain established in mental perfection, enjoying happiness, long life, beauty, virtue, and sovereignty.
At the ends of Śālmala, in all three islands, this should be understood; the auspicious order of the islands at the ends of Śālmala has been explained.
