These seven, greatly blessed and bearing Śiva's waters, nourish all the people dwelling in Śākadvīpa each year.
Other rivers, streams, and lakes, abundant in water, also reach there, wherever Indra causes rain to fall.
The names and measurements of those sacred and excellent rivers cannot be fully enumerated.
The people of those lands, always joyful, drink from those rivers; they are described as peaceful, fearless, and truly blessed.
Those lands, renowned as seven, are filled with happiness, comfort, and security, together with new ones, and are established with the practices of the four social classes and stages of life.
All are healthy and strong, free from death; among them there is neither decline nor increase.
There is no division of ages there, as is made by the four yugas; time proceeds there as in the Tretā Yuga.
In Śākadvīpa and the other five islands, this is to be known everywhere; by consideration of the region, time is regarded as natural.
Among them, there was never any confusion of castes or stages of life, nor any deviation from righteousness; the people enjoyed unbroken happiness.
Among them, there was neither illusion nor greed, nor envy or malice, nor any fear; there was no reversal of nature—such was their innate condition.
There was no time for them, nor punishment or punisher; knowing righteousness, they protected one another by their own proper duties.
There is a great circular continent called Kuśa, surrounded by rivers and waters, and mountains resembling clouds.
It is adorned with all kinds of minerals, decorated with jewels and coral, and with other beautiful and variously shaped, delightful regions.
It is filled everywhere with trees bearing flowers and fruits, always abundant in wealth and grain, ever covered with flowers and fruits, and surrounded by all precious gems.
It is encircled on all sides by all kinds of animals, both domestic and wild; now, hear in order and briefly about the Kuśa continent.
Now I will describe in full the third, the Kuśa continent, which is entirely surrounded by the ocean of milk.
It is twice the size in extent as the Śāka continent; there too are seven mountains, known as sources of jewels.
There are jewel-bearing mountains and rivers; listen to their names from me. All of them have two names, just as in the Śāka continent.
The first mountain, shining like the sun, is called Kumuda, and is also known as Vidrumoccaya, that very same great mountain.
The second mountain there, renowned as Unnata, has peaks of all metals and is covered with rocky masses.
It is also called Hemaparvata, that same great mountain, with peaks of orpiment, encircling the continent on all sides.
The third is the mountain Balāhaka, a peak made of natural collyrium, called Dyutimān by name, that very same great mountain.
The fourth mountain is Droṇa, a great mountain where medicinal herbs grow, including Viśalyakaraṇī and Mṛtasaṃjīvanī.
That mountain, richly piled up, is called Puṣpavān; among them, the fifth mountain is named Kaṅka, full of essence.
It is called Kuśeśaya, that same earth-bearing mountain, endowed with divine flowers and fruits, and accompanied by divine herbs.
The sixth mountain there is Mahīṣa, resembling a cloud; it is also called Hari, as it is widely known.
There dwells Agni, called Mahiṣa, who is the seventh mountain born from water; Kakudmān is spoken of as its summit.
Mandara is to be known as the auspicious mountain composed of all elements; 'manda' is the element that reveals what is hidden.
Because it splits the waters, it is called Mandara; there, Indra himself guards many gems.
Taking Prajapati, he apportioned to the creatures; among them, the inner support is said to be double.
