सर्वधातुमयस्तत्र सुमहान्वैद्युतो गिरिः तस्य पादे महद्दिव्यं मानसं सिद्धसेवितम्
There stands a great mountain, composed of all elements, radiant like lightning; at its foot lies the vast and divine Mānasa lake, frequented by perfected beings.
तस्मात्प्रभवते पुण्या सरयूर्लोकपावनी यस्यास्तीरे वनं दिव्यं वैभ्राजं नाम विश्रुतम्
From there arises the sacred Sarayū river, purifier of the worlds, on whose bank is the renowned and divine forest called Vaibhrāja.
कुबेरानुचरस्तस्मिन् प्रहेतितनयो वशी ब्रह्मधाता निवसति राक्षसो ऽनन्तविक्रमः
There dwells Brahmadhātā, a mighty and self-controlled Rākṣasa, son of Prahetita and attendant of Kubera, possessing boundless power.
कैलासात्पश्चिमामाशां दिव्यः सर्वौषधिगिरिः वरुणः पर्वतश्रेष्ठो रुक्मधातुविभूषितः
To the west of Kailāsa is the divine mountain of all herbs, Varuṇa, foremost among mountains, adorned with veins of gold.
भवस्य दयितः श्रीमान् पर्वतो हैमसंनिभः शातकौम्भमयैर्दिव्यैः शिलाजालैः समाचितः
Beloved of Bhava and resplendent, the mountain shines like gold, heaped with divine rocks of pure gold and shining ore.
शतसङ्ख्यैस् तापनीयैः शृङ्गैर्दिवमिवोल्लिखन् शृङ्गवान्सुमहादिव्यो दुर्गः शैलो महाचितः
With hundreds of blazing golden peaks, as if piercing the sky, the great and divine mountain Śṛṅgavān stands, formidable and lofty.
तस्मिन्गिरौ निवसति गिरिशो धूम्रलोहितः तस्य पादात्प्रभवति शैलोदं नाम तत्सरः
On that mountain resides the lord of mountains, Dhūmralohita; from its foot arises the lake called Śailoda.
तस्मात्प्रभवते पुण्या नदी शैलोदका शुभा सा चक्षुसी तयोर्मध्ये प्रविष्टा पश्चिमोदधिम्
From that lake flows the sacred and auspicious river Śailodakā; entering between those two, the river Cakṣuṣī proceeds to the western ocean.
अस्त्युत्तरेण कैलासाच् छिवः सर्वौषधो गिरिः गौरं तु पर्वतश्रेष्ठं हरितालमयं प्रति
To the north of Kailāsa is the sacred mountain Sarvauṣadha, and facing it is the foremost of mountains, white and made of orpiment.
हिरण्यशृङ्गः सुमहादिव्यौषधिमयो गिरिः तस्य पादे महद्दिव्यं सरः काञ्चनवालुकम्
The great and divine mountain Hiraṇyaśṛṅga, rich in wondrous herbs, stands there; at its foot is a vast and divine lake with golden sands.
रम्यं बिन्दुसरो नाम यत्र राजा भगीरथः गङ्गार्थे स तु राजर्षिर् उवास बहुलाः समाः
There is the delightful Bindusara lake, where King Bhagiratha, seeking the Ganges, dwelled for many years.
दिवं यास्यन्तु मे पूर्वे गङ्गातोयाप्लुतास्थिकाः तत्र त्रिपथगा देवी प्रथमं तु प्रतिष्ठिता
Those of my ancestors whose bones were washed by the waters of the Ganges have gone to heaven; there, the goddess Tripathagā first descended.
सोमपादात्प्रसूता सा सप्तधा प्रविभज्यते यूपा मणिमयास्तत्र विमानाश्च हिरण्मयाः
From the foot of Soma she was born, dividing herself into seven streams; there are sacrificial posts of jewels and celestial palaces of gold.
तत्रेष्ट्वा क्रतुभिः सिद्धः शक्रः सुरगणैः सह दिव्यश्छायापथस् तत्र नक्षत्राणां तु मण्डलम्
There, having performed sacrifices, Indra attained perfection along with the hosts of gods; there, too, is the radiant path of shadows and the circle of the stars.
दृश्यते भासुरा रात्रौ देवी त्रिपथगा तु सा अन्तरिक्षं दिवं चैव भावयित्वा भुवं गता
At night, the radiant goddess Tripathagā is seen there; after traversing the sky and heaven, she descended to earth.
भवोत्तमाङ्गे पतिता संरुद्धा योगमायया तस्या ये बिन्दवः केचित् क्रुद्धायाः पतिता भुवि
Falling upon the highest part of Bhava, she was restrained by the power of yoga; some of her drops, fallen in anger, reached the earth.
कृतं तु तैर्बहुसरस् ततो बिन्दुसरः स्मृतम् ततस्तस्या निरुद्धाया भवेन सहसा रुषा
By those drops many lakes were formed, hence it is called Bindusara; then, as she was suddenly checked by Bhava's wrath—
ज्ञात्वा तस्या ह्यभिप्रायं क्रूरं देव्याश्चिकीर्षितम् भित्त्वा विशामि पातालं स्रोतसा गृह्य शंकरम्
Knowing her intent and the harsh purpose of the goddess, I broke through and entered the netherworld, carrying Śaṅkara with the current.
अथावलेपं तं ज्ञात्वा तस्याः क्रुद्धस्तु शंकरः तिरोभावयितुं बुद्धिर् आसीदङ्गेषु तां नदीम्
Then, perceiving her arrogance, Śaṃkara became angry and resolved to make the river disappear from his own limbs.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु दृष्ट्वा राजानमग्रतः धमनीसंततं क्षीणं क्षुधाव्याकुलितेन्द्रियम्
At that very moment, seeing the king before him, his veins standing out, emaciated, and his senses disturbed by hunger—
अनेन तोषितश्चाहं नद्यर्थे पूर्वमेव तु बुद्ध्वाऽस्य वरदानं तु ततः कोपं न्ययच्छत
He thought, 'I have already been satisfied by him before, for the sake of the river; knowing this, I restrained my anger and granted the boon.'
ब्रह्मणो वचनं श्रुत्वा यदुक्तं धारयन्नदीम् ततो विसर्जयामास संरुद्धां स्वेन तेजसा
Recalling the words spoken by Brahmā, he held the river and then released her, who had been restrained by his own power.
नदीं भगीरथस्यार्थे तपसोग्रेण तोषितः ततो विसर्जयामास सप्त स्रोतांसि गङ्गया
For the sake of Bhagīratha, satisfied by his intense austerity, he then released Gaṅgā in seven streams.
त्रीणि प्राचीमभिमुखं प्रतीचीं त्रीण्यथैव तु स्रोतांसि त्रिपथायास्तु प्रत्यपद्यन्त सप्तधा
Three streams flowed eastward, and three westward; thus, the river of three paths divided into seven channels.
नलिनी ह्लादिनी चैव पावनी चैव प्राच्यगा सीता चक्षुश्च सिन्धुश्च तिस्रस्ता वै प्रतीच्यगाः
Nalinī, Hlādinī, and Pāvanī flowed eastward; Sītā, Cakṣu, and Sindhu—these three flowed westward.
सप्तमी त्वनुगा तासां दक्षिणेन भगीरथम् तस्माद्भागीरथी सा वै प्रविष्टा दक्षिणोदधिम्
The seventh, called Anugā, followed Bhagīratha to the south; therefore, Bhāgīrathī entered the southern ocean.
सप्त चैताः प्लावयन्ति वर्षं तु हिमसाह्वयम् प्रसूताः सप्त नद्यस्तु शुभा बिन्दुसरोद्भवाः
These seven rivers flood the land called Himāhvaya; the seven auspicious rivers, born from Lake Bindusaras, arose there.
तान्देशान्प्लावयन्ति स्म म्लेच्छप्रायांश्च सर्वशः सशैलान्कुकुरान्रौध्रान् बर्बरान्यवनान्खसान्
They flooded those lands, inhabited mostly by mlecchas, along with their mountains: Kukuras, Raudhras, Barbaras, Yavanas, and Khasas.
पुलिकांश्च कुलत्थांश्च अङ्गलोक्यान्वरांश्च यान् कृत्वा द्विधा हिमवन्तं प्रविष्टा दक्षिणोदधिम्
And also the Pulikas, Kulatthas, Aṅgalokyas, and other peoples; having divided, the river entered the southern ocean through the Himālaya.
अथ वीरमरूंश्चैव कालिकांश्चैव शूलिकान् तुकरान्बर्बराकारान् पह्लवान्पारदाञ्छकान्
