प्रासादे तत्र भगवान् देवदेवो जनार्दनः भोगिभोगावलीसुप्तः सर्वालंकारभूषितः
There, in that palace, the Blessed Lord, God of gods, Janardana, lies upon the coils of the serpent, adorned with all ornaments.
जानुनाकुञ्चितस्त्वेको देवदेवस्य चक्रिणः फणीन्द्रसंनिविष्टो ऽङ्घ्रिर् द्वितीयश्च तथानघ
One knee is bent, O sinless one, and the foot of the Lord of gods, the wielder of the discus, rests upon the hood of the serpent king; the other foot likewise.
लक्षयुत्सङ्गगतो ऽङ्घ्रिस्तु शेषभोगप्रशायिनः फणीन्द्रभोगसंन्यस्तबाहुः केयूरभूषणः
One foot rests upon the lap of Lakshmi, who soothes the coils of Shesha; his arm, adorned with armlets, lies upon the coils of the serpent king.
अङ्गुलीपृष्ठविन्यस्तदेवशीर्षधरं भुजम् एकं वै देवदेवस्य द्वितीयं तु प्रसारितम्
One arm of the Lord of gods is placed behind his head, the other is extended.
समाकुञ्चितजानुस्थमणिबन्धेन शोभितम् किंचिदाकुञ्चितं चैव नाभिदेशकरस्थितम्
His bent knee is adorned with a jeweled bracelet; another arm, slightly bent, rests near his navel.
तृतीयं तु भुजं तस्य चतुर्थं तु तथा शृणु आत्तसंतानकुसुमं घ्राणदेशानुसर्पिणम्
Hear now of his third and fourth arms: one holds a garland of parijata flowers, following the line of his nose.
लक्ष्म्या संवाह्यमानाङ्घ्रिः पद्मपत्त्रनिभैः करैः संतानमालामुकुटं हारकेयूरभूषितम्
His foot is massaged by Lakshmi with hands like lotus petals; he is adorned with a garland, a crown, a necklace, and armlets.
भूषितं च तथा देवम् अङ्गदैरङ्गुलीयकैः फणीन्द्रफणविन्यस्तचारुरत्नशिरोज्ज्वलम्
The Lord is likewise adorned with bracelets and rings, his beautiful, radiant head resting upon the jeweled hood of the serpent king.
अज्ञातवस्तुचरितं प्रतिष्ठितम् अथात्रिणा सिद्धानुपूज्यं सततं संतानकुसुमार्चितम्
The place, whose true nature was unknown, established by Atri, was always honored by accomplished sages and adorned with garlands of lineage flowers.
दिव्यगन्धानुलिप्ताङ्गं दिव्यधूपेन धूपितम् सुरसैः सुफलैर्हृद्यैः सिद्धैरुपहृतैः सदा
His body was anointed with divine fragrances, perfumed with celestial incense, and always offered delightful, excellent fruits by perfected beings.
शोभितोत्तमपार्श्वं तं देवमुत्पलशीर्षकम् ततः सम्मुखम् उद्वीक्ष्य ववन्दे स नराधिपः
That god, with a lotus-shaped crown, shone with splendid sides; the king, gazing directly at him, bowed in reverence.
जानुभ्यां शिरसा चैव गत्वा भूमिं यथाविधि नाम्नां सहस्रेण तदा तुष्टाव मधुसूदनम्
Approaching as prescribed, with knees and head touching the ground, he praised Madhusudana with a thousand names.
प्रदक्षिणमथो चक्रे स तूत्थाय पुनः पुनः रम्यमायतनं दृष्ट्वा तत्रोवासाश्रमे पुनः
Then, rising again and again, he circumambulated the beautiful sanctuary, and stayed once more in the hermitage there.
बिलाद्बहिर्गुहां कांचिद् आश्रित्य सुमनोहराम् तपश्चकार तत्रैव पूजयन्मधुसूदनम्
Leaving the cave, he took refuge in another charming grotto, and there performed austerities, worshipping Madhusudana.
नानाविधैस्तथा पुष्पैः फलमूलैः सगोरसैः नित्यं त्रिषवणस्नायी वह्निपूजापरायणः
With various flowers, fruits, roots, and milk, always bathing thrice daily, devoted to fire worship.
देववापीजलैः कुर्वन् सततं प्राणधारणम् सर्वाहारपरित्यागं कृत्वा तु मनुजेश्वरः
Using water from divine ponds, he constantly practiced breath control, and the king renounced all food.
अनास्तृतगुहाशायी कालं नयति पार्थिवः त्यक्ताहारक्रियश्चैव केवलं तोयतो नृपः न तस्य ग्लानिमायाति शरीरं च तदद्भुतम्
Sleeping in an unprepared cave, the king spent his time, having abandoned food rituals, subsisting only on water; his body did not become weary, which was wondrous.
एवं स राजा तपसि प्रसक्तः सम्पूजयन्देववरं सदैव तत्राश्रमे कालमुवास कंचित् स्वर्गोपमे दुःखम् अविन्दमानः
Thus, the king, absorbed in austerities and always worshipping the supreme god, dwelled in that hermitage for some time, experiencing no sorrow, as if in heaven.
स त्वाश्रमपदे रम्ये त्यक्ताहारपरिच्छदः क्रीडाविहारं गन्धर्वैः पश्यन्नप्सरसां सह
In that delightful hermitage, having given up food and possessions, he watched the Gandharvas play and sport together with the Apsaras.
कृत्वा पुष्पोच्चयं भूरि ग्रन्थयित्वा तथा स्रजः अग्रं निवेद्य देवाय गन्धर्वेभ्यस्तदा ददौ
Gathering many flowers and weaving garlands, he offered the foremost to the god, and then gave them to the Gandharvas.
पुष्पोच्चयप्रसक्तानां क्रीडन्तीनां यथासुखम् चेष्टा नानाविधाकाराः पश्यन्नपि न पश्यति
Though observing the various activities of those absorbed in flower gathering and playing as they pleased, he did not truly see them.
काचित्पुष्पोच्चये सक्ता लताजालेन वेष्टिता सखीजनेन संत्यक्ता कान्तेनाभिसमुज्झिता
One, engrossed in gathering flowers, was entwined in a lattice of vines, abandoned by her companions and left behind by her beloved.
काचित्कमलगन्धाभा निःश्वासपवनाहृतैः मधुपैराकुलमुखी कान्तेन परिमोचिता
Another, fragrant with lotus scent, her face troubled by bees drawn by her sighs, was freed by her beloved.
मकरन्दसभाक्रान्तनयना काचिदङ्गना कान्तनिःश्वासवातेन नीरजस्ककृतेक्षणा
One woman, her eyes covered by honey-laden bees, had her gaze obscured by the breath of her beloved.
काचिद् उच्चीय पुष्पाणि ददौ कान्तस्य भामिनी कान्तसंग्रथितैः पुष्पै रराज कृतशेखरा
A radiant woman, having gathered flowers, gave them to her beloved; adorned with flowers woven by him, she shone with a floral crown.
उच्चीय स्वयम् उद्ग्रथ्य कान्तेन कृतशेखरा कृतकृत्यमिवात्मानं मेने मन्मथवर्धिनी
Having gathered and woven flowers herself, crowned by her beloved, she considered herself fulfilled, her passion increased.
अस्त्वस्मिन्गहने कुञ्जे विशिष्टकुसुमा लता काचिदेवं रहो नीता रमणेन रिरंसुना
In this secluded grove, a certain creeper with exceptional flowers was led away in secret by her eager lover.
कान्तसंनामितलता कुसुमानि विचिन्वती सर्वाभ्यः काचिदात्मानं मेने सर्वगुणाधिकम्
While searching for flowers among creepers entwined by their beloveds, one woman considered herself superior to all in every virtue.
काश्चित्पश्यति भूपालं नलिनीषु पृथक्पृथक् क्रीडमानास्तु गन्धर्वैर् देवरामा मनोरमाः
Some saw the king among the lotuses, separately playing with the Gandharvas and the divine, charming women.
काचिद् आताडयत् कान्तम् उदकेन शुचिस्मिता ताड्यमानाथ कान्तेन प्रीतिं काचिदुपाययौ
One woman, smiling brightly, struck her beloved with water; when struck in turn by him, she felt joy.
