तदाश्रमं समन्ताच्च हिमसंरुद्धकन्दरैः शैलवाटैः परिवृतम् अगम्यं मनुजैः सदा
That hermitage was surrounded on all sides by snow-filled caves and mountain enclosures, always inaccessible to men.
पूर्वाराधितभावो ऽसौ महाराजः पुरूरवाः तदाश्रमपदं प्राप्तो देवदेवप्रसादतः
That great king Pururavas, whose devotion was established from before, reached that hermitage by the grace of the god of gods.
तदाश्रमं श्रमशमनं मनोहरं मनोहरैः कुसुमशतैरलंकृतम् कृतं स्वयं रुचिरमथात्रिणा शुभं शुभावहं च हि ददृशे स मद्रराट्
Then the hermitage, soothing fatigue and enchanting, adorned with hundreds of delightful flowers, beautifully arranged by Atri himself, auspicious and bringing good fortune, appeared before the king of Madra.
तत्र यौ तौ महाशृङ्गौ महावर्णौ महाहिमौ तृतीयं तु तयोर्मध्ये शृङ्गमत्यन्तमुच्छ्रितम्

तमसा चातिनिबिडं नल्वमात्रं सुसंकटम् नल्वमात्रमतिक्रम्य स्वप्रभाभरणोज्ज्वलम्
Dense with darkness, narrow as a nalva, passing beyond that nalva's length, it shone with the brilliance of its own ornaments.
तम् उच्छ्रितम् अथात्यन्तं गम्भीरं परिवर्तुलम् न तत्र सूर्यस्तपति न विराजति चन्द्रमाः
That place, exceedingly lofty, deep, and winding, where neither the sun shines nor the moon glows.
तथापि दिवसाकारं प्रकाशं तदहर्निशम् क्रोशाधिकपरीमाणं सरसा च विराजितम्
Yet, it always appeared as day, illuminated both day and night, measuring more than a krosha, and splendid with a lake.
समन्तात्सरसस्तस्य शैललग्ना तु वेदिका सौवर्णै राजतैर्वृक्षैर् विद्रुमैरुपशोभितम्
All around that lake, platforms attached to the mountain, adorned with golden, silver, and coral trees.
नानामाणिक्यकुसुमैः सुप्रभाभरणोज्ज्वलैः तस्मिन्सरसि पद्मानि पद्मरागच्छदानि तु
With various jeweled flowers, shining with splendid ornaments, in that lake were lotuses with petals of padmaraga gems.
वज्रकेसरजालानि सुगन्धीनि तथा युतम् पत्त्रैर् मरकतैर् नीलैर् वैडूर्यस्य महीपते
With clusters of diamond filaments, fragrant, accompanied by leaves of emerald and sapphire, O king.
कर्णिकाश्च तथा तेषां जातरूपस्य पार्थिव तस्मिन्सरसि या भूमिर् न सा वज्रसमाकुला
And their centers were of gold, O ruler; in that lake, the ground was not filled with diamonds.
नानारत्नैरुपचिता जलजानां समाश्रयः कपर्दिकानां शुक्तीनां शङ्खानां च महीपते
It was covered with various gems, the abode of aquatic creatures—cowries, oysters, and conches, O king.
मकराणां च मत्स्यानां चण्डानां कच्छपैः सह तत्र मरकतखण्डानि वज्राणां च सहस्रशः
There were crocodiles and fish, fierce turtles as well; pieces of emerald and thousands of diamonds.
पद्मरागेन्द्रनीलानि महानीलानि पार्थिव पुष्परागाणि सर्वाणि तथा कर्कोटकानि च
Padmaraga, indranila, great sapphires, O king, all kinds of spinel gems, and also karkoṭaka stones.
तुत्थकस्य तु खण्डानि तथा शेषस्य भागशः राजावर्तस्य मुख्यस्य रुचिराक्षस्य चाप्यथ
Pieces of copper, portions of shesha, and the chief rājāvarta, as well as the beautiful-eyed gems.
सूर्येन्दुकान्तयश्चैव नीलो वर्णान्तिमश्च यः ज्योतीरसस्य रम्यस्य स्यमन्तस्य च भागशः
Sun and moon gems, and the one with the deepest blue hue, portions of the radiant and delightful syamantaka gem.
सुरोरगवलक्षाणां स्फटिकस्य तथैव च गोमेदपित्तकानां च धूलीमरकतस्य च
Gems of the gods and serpents, crystal, garnet, yellow sapphire, and dust of emerald.
वैडूर्यसौगन्धिकयोस् तथा राजमणेर्नृप वज्रस्यैव च मुख्यस्य तथा ब्रह्ममणेरपि

मुक्ताफलानि मुक्तानां ताराविग्रहधारिणाम्
Pearls adorn those who bear the form of stars.
सुखोष्णं चैव तत्तोयं स्नानाच्छीतविनाशनम् वैडूर्यस्य शिला मध्ये सरसस्तस्य शोभना
That water is pleasantly warm, dispelling the chill of bathing; within the stone of vaidurya, the lake there is beautiful.
प्रमाणेन तथा सा च द्वे च राजन्धनुःशते चतुरस्रा तथा रम्या तपसा निर्मितात्रिणा
Its measure, O King, is two hundred bows in length, square in shape, delightful, and created by the austerities of the three.
बिलद्वारसमो देशो यत्र यत्र हिरण्मयः प्रदेशः स तु राजेन्द्र द्वीपे तस्मिन्मनोहरे
There, in that charming island, is a region like the entrance to a cave, entirely golden, O King of Kings.
तथा पुष्करिणी रम्या तस्मिन्राजञ्शिलातले सुशीतामलपानीया जलजैश्च विराजिता
Likewise, there is a lovely lotus-pond upon a stone terrace, with pure, cool drinking water, adorned with aquatic flowers.
आकाशप्रतिमा राजंश् चतुरस्रा मनोहरा तस्यास्तदुदकं स्वादु लघु शीतं सुगन्धिकम्
O King, that pond is like the sky, square and enchanting; its water is sweet, light, cool, and fragrant.
न क्षिणोति यथा कण्ठं कुक्षिं नापूरयत्यपि तृप्तिं विधत्ते परमां शरीरे च महत्सुखम्
It does not parch the throat, nor does it fill the belly, yet it brings supreme satisfaction and great comfort to the body.
मध्ये तु तस्याः प्रासादं निर्मितं तपसात्रिणा रुक्मसेतुप्रवेशान्तं सर्वरत्नमयं शुभम्
In the midst of it stands a palace, built by the austerities of the three, with a golden bridge at its entrance, splendid and adorned with every jewel.
शशाङ्करश्मेः संकाशं प्रासादं राजतं हितम् रम्यवैडूर्यसोपानं विद्रुमामलसारकम्
The palace shines like the rays of the moon and is made of silver, with delightful stairs of vaidurya and pure coral railings.
इन्द्रनीलमहास्तम्भं मरकतासक्तवेदिकम् वज्रांशुजालैः स्फुरितं रम्यं दृष्टिमनोरमम्
It has great pillars of sapphire, platforms set with emeralds, and sparkles with a network of diamond rays, beautiful and pleasing to behold.
