नदीप्रवाहसंजातमहाशब्दैः समन्ततः असंश्रुतान्यशब्दं तं शीततोयं मनोरमम्
All around, the great sound of river currents filled the air, so that no other sound could be heard in that cool, delightful place.
देवदारुवनैर्नीलैः कृताधोवसनं शुभम् मेघोत्तरीयकं शैलं ददृशे स नराधिपः
There, the king saw the mountain, clothed in blue with forests of celestial deodar trees, its slopes washed clean, and draped with clouds like an upper garment.
श्वेतमेघकृतोष्णीषं चन्द्रार्कमुकुटं क्वचित् हिमानुलिप्तसर्वाङ्गं क्वचिद्धातुविमिश्रितम्
In some places, it bore a white cloud as a turban, and elsewhere, the moon and sun as its crown; in some parts, its whole body was smeared with snow, and in others, it was streaked with minerals.
चन्दनेनानुलिप्ताङ्गं दत्तपञ्चाङ्गुलं यथा शीतप्रदं निदाघे ऽपि शिलाविकटसंकटम् सालक्तकैरप्सरसां मुद्रितं चरणैः क्वचित्
In some places, its surface was anointed with sandalwood, as if a five-fingered hand had applied it, giving coolness even in the heat, and the rocky, steep paths were imprinted here and there with the red-lacquered feet of Apsarases.
क्वचित्संस्पृष्टसूर्यांशुं क्वचिच् च तमसावृतम् दरीमुखैः क्वचिद्भीमैः पिबन्तं सलिलं महत्
In some places, it was touched by the rays of the sun, and in others, shrouded in darkness; in certain spots, fierce mountain streams with gaping mouths seemed to drink up great quantities of water.
क्वचिद्विद्याधरगणैः क्रीडद्भिरुपशोभितम् उपगीतं तथा मुख्यैः किंनराणां गणैः क्वचित्
In some places, it was adorned by groups of Vidyādharas playing, and elsewhere, it was sung to by the chief bands of Kinnaras.
आपानभूमौ गलितैर् गन्धर्वाप्सरसां क्वचित् पुष्पैः संतानकादीनां दिव्यैस्तम् उपशोभितम्
In some places on its slopes, it was beautified by the fallen divine flowers of Gandharvas and Apsarases, especially those from the celestial trees like the Santānaka.
सुप्तोत्थिताभिः शय्याभिः कुसुमानां तथा क्वचित् मृदिताभिः समाकीर्णं गन्धर्वाणां मनोरमम्
In some places, the lovely beds of Gandharvas, where they had just risen or where the flowers had been crushed, were scattered all around.
निरुद्धपवनैर्देशैर् नीलशाद्वलमण्डितैः क्वचिच् च कुसुमैर्युक्तम् अत्यन्तरुचिरं शुभम्
In some regions, where the wind was stilled, the ground was adorned with dark green grass, and elsewhere, it was splendidly beautiful, covered with flowers.
तपस्विशरणं शैलं कामिनामतिदुर्लभम् मृगैर्यथानुचरितं दन्तिभिन्नमहाद्रुमम्
That mountain was a refuge for ascetics, exceedingly difficult for lovers to attain, traversed by wild animals, and with great trees broken by elephants.
यत्र सिंहनिनादेन त्रस्तानां भैरवं रवम् दृश्यते न च संश्रान्तं गजानामाकुलं कुलम्
There, the terrifying roar of lions frightened other creatures, and one could see herds of elephants, restless but never weary.
तटाश्च तापसैर्यत्र कुञ्जदेशैरलंकृताः रत्नैर्यस्य समुत्पन्नैस् त्रैलोक्यं समलंकृतम्
Its slopes were adorned by ascetics and by herds of elephants, and the jewels that arose from it adorned all three worlds.
अहीनशरणं नित्यम् अहीनजनसेवितम् अहीनः पश्यति गिरिम् अहीनं रत्नसम्पदा
It was always a refuge for the Nāgas, constantly attended by Nāga people; the Nāga sees the mountain, which is rich in jewels, as Nāga-like itself.
अल्पेन तपसा यत्र सिद्धिं प्राप्स्यन्ति तापसाः यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण सर्वकल्मषनाशनम्
There, ascetics attain success with little austerity, and the mere sight of it destroys all sins.
महाप्रपातसम्पातप्रपातादिगताम्बुभिः वायुनीतैः सदा तृप्तिकृतदेशं क्वचित्क्वचित्
In some places, the land was always satisfied by water brought by the wind from great waterfalls, cascades, and other streams.
समालब्धजलैः शृङ्गैः क्वचिच् चापि समुच्छ्रितैः नित्यार्कतापविषमैर् अगम्यैर्मनसा युतम्
In some places, its peaks, having gathered water, rose high, and were so harsh with constant sun and heat that they could not be imagined by the mind.
देवदारुमहावृक्षव्रजशाखानिरन्तरैः वंशस्तम्बवनाकारैः प्रदेशैरुपशोभितम्
It was adorned with regions where the branches of great deodar trees and other mighty trees were unbroken, and with bamboo groves standing like pillars.
हिमछत्त्रमहाशृङ्गं प्रपातशतनिर्झरम् शब्दलभ्याम्बुविषमं हिमसंरुद्धकन्दरम्
Its great peaks were like snowy umbrellas, with hundreds of waterfalls and streams, where water could be found by sound alone, and its caves were blocked by snow.
दृष्ट्वैव तं चारुनितम्बभूमिं महानुभावः स तु मद्रनाथः बभ्राम तत्रैव मुदा समेतः स्थानं तदा किंचिदथाससाद
Upon seeing that land, with its reddish slopes, the mighty lord of Madra wandered there joyfully, and after some time, he found a certain place.
तस्यैव पर्वतेन्द्रस्य प्रदेशं सुमनोरमम् अगम्यं मानुषैर् अन्यैर् दैवयोगाद् उपागतः
By divine arrangement, he reached a most delightful region of that very king of mountains, a place inaccessible to other humans.
ऐरावती सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा यस्माद्देशाद्विनिर्गता मेघश्यामं च तं देशं द्रुमखण्डैरनेकशः
From that land flows the Iravati, the foremost of rivers, and that land, dark as a raincloud, is thickly covered with many kinds of trees.
शालैस्तालैस्तमालैश्च कर्णिकारैः सशामलैः न्यग्रोधैश्च तथाश्वत्थैः शिरीषैः शिंशपद्रुमैः
With shala, tala, tamala, and karnikara trees, shaded with nyagrodha, asvattha, sirisa, and simshapa trees.
श्लेष्मातकैर् आमलकैर् हरीतकविभीतकैः भूर्जैः समुञ्जकैर् बाणैर् वृक्षैः सप्तच्छदद्रुमैः
With shleshmātaka, amalaki, haritaki, vibhitaka, bhurja, samuñjaka, bana, and saptacchada trees.
महानिम्बैस्तथा निम्बैर् निर्गुण्डीभिर्हरिद्रुमैः देवदारुमहावृक्षैस् तथा कालेयकद्रुमैः
With great nimba and nimba trees, nirgundi, haridru, the mighty devadaru trees, and also kaleyaka trees.
पद्मकैश्चन्दनैर्बिल्वैः कपित्थै रक्तचन्दनैः माताम्ररिष्टकाक्षोटैर् अब्दकैश्च तथार्जुनैः
With padma, candana, bilva, kapittha, red sandalwood, matamra, rishtaka, akshota, abdaka, and arjuna trees.
हस्तिकर्णैः सुमनसैः कोविदारैः सुपुष्पितैः प्राचीनामलकैश्चापि धनकैः समराटकैः
With hastikarṇa, sumanasa, kovidara, splendidly flowering, prachinamalaka, dhanaka, and samarataka trees.
खर्जूरैर्नारिकेलैश्च प्रियालाम्रातकेङ्गुदैः तन्तुमालैर् धवैर्भव्यैः काश्मीरीपर्णिभिस्तथा
With kharjura, coconut, priyala, amrataka, inguda, tantumala, dhava, bhavya, and kashmiri-leaved trees.
जातीफलैः पूगफलैः कट्फलैलावलीफलैः मन्दारैः कोविदारैश्च किंशुकैः कुसुमांशुकैः
With nutmeg, betel nut, katphala, avaliphala, mandara, kovidara, kimshuka, and kusumamshuka trees.
यवासैः शमिपर्णासैर् वेतसैर् अम्बुवेतसैः रक्तातिरङ्गनारङ्गैर् हिङ्गुभिः सप्रियङ्गुभिः
With yavas, shamiparna, vetasa, ambuvetasa, red atiranga, naranga, hingu, and priyangu trees.
रक्ताशोकैस् तथाशोकैर् आकल्लैर् अविचारकैः मुचुकुन्दैस्तथा कुन्दैर् आटरूषपरूषकैः
With red asoka and asoka trees, akalla, avicharaka, mucukunda, kunda, and atarusha-parushaka trees.
