अनामया ह्यशोकाश्च नित्यं मुदितमानसाः सुवर्णवर्णाश्च नराः स्त्रियश्चाप्सरसः स्मृताः
Indeed, men and women there are free from disease and sorrow, always joyful in mind, golden in color, and the women are remembered as apsarases.
ततः परं किम्पुरुषाद् धरिवर्षं प्रचक्षते महारजतसंकाशा जायन्ते यत्र मानवाः
Beyond that, after Kimpurusha, they speak of Harivarsha, where people are born with the radiance of great silver.
देवलोकच्युताः सर्वे बहुरूपाश्च सर्वशः हरिवर्षे नराः सर्वे पिबन्तीक्षुरसं शुभम्
All the people in Harivarsha have fallen from the world of the gods, possessing many forms in every way, and all drink the auspicious juice of sugarcane.
न जरा बाधते तत्र तेन जीवन्ति ते चिरम् एकादश सहस्राणि तेषामायुः प्रकीर्तितम्
Old age does not afflict them there, so they live long; their lifespan is said to be eleven thousand years.
मध्यमं तन्मया प्रोक्तं नाम्ना वर्षमिलावृतम् न तत्र सूर्यस्तपति न च जानन्ति मानवाः
I have described the middle region, named Ilavrita, where the sun does not shine, nor do the people know it.
चन्द्रसूर्यौ सनक्षत्राव् अप्रकाशाविलावृते पद्मप्रभाः पद्मवर्णाः पद्मपत्त्रनिभेक्षणाः
In Ilavrita, the moon and sun, along with the stars, do not shine; the people have the radiance of lotuses, are lotus-colored, and their eyes resemble lotus petals.
पद्मगन्धाश्च जायन्ते तत्र सर्वे च मानवाः जम्बूफलरसाहारा अनिष्पन्दाः सुगन्धिनः
There, all the people are born with the fragrance of lotuses, they eat the juice of jambū fruits, are motionless, and possess a pleasant scent.
देवलोकच्युताः सर्वे महारजतवाससः त्रयोदश सहस्राणि वर्षाणां ते नरोत्तमाः
All are fallen from the world of the gods, clothed in great silver, and those excellent men live for thirteen thousand years.
आयुष्प्रमाणं जीवन्ति ये तु वर्ष इलावृते मेरोस्तु दक्षिणे पार्श्वे निषधस्योत्तरेण वा
Those who live in Ilavrita, on the southern side of Meru or north of Nishadha, have the same measure of lifespan.
सुदर्शनो नाम महाञ् जम्बूवृक्षः सनातनः नित्यपुष्पफलोपेतः सिद्धचारणसेवितः
There is a great, eternal jambū tree named Sudarshana, always adorned with flowers and fruits, served by siddhas and charanas.
तस्य नाम्ना समाख्यातो जम्बूद्वीपो वनस्पतेः योजनानां सहस्रं च शतधा च महान्पुनः
By the name of that tree, the island of Jambū is designated; it is vast, a thousand yojanas in extent, and again a hundredfold great.
उत्सेधो वृक्षराजस्य दिवम् आवृत्य तिष्ठति तस्य जम्बूफलरसो नदी भूत्वा प्रसर्पति
The height of the king of trees stands covering the sky, and the juice of its jambū fruit becomes a river and flows forth.
मेरुं प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा जम्बूमूलगता पुनः तं पिबन्ति सदा हृष्टा जम्बूरसमिलावृते
Having circled Meru, the river returns to the root of the jambū tree; those in Ilavrita always joyfully drink it.
जम्बूफलरसं पीत्वा न जरा बाधते ऽपि तान् न क्षुधा न क्लमो वापि न दुःखं च तथाविधम्
By drinking the juice of the jambū fruit, old age does not afflict them; neither hunger nor fatigue nor any such suffering.
तत्र जाम्बूनदं नाम कनकं देवभूषणम् इन्द्रगोपकसंकाशं जायते भासुरं च यत्
There, a gold called jāmbūnada, an ornament of the gods, is produced, shining like the indragopa insect.
सर्वेषां वर्षवृक्षाणां शुभः फलरसस्तु सः स्कन्नं तु काञ्चनं शुभ्रं जायते देवभूषणम्
The auspicious fruit juice of all the region's trees is that; the gold that flows out is pure and becomes an ornament of the gods.
तेषां मूत्रं पुरीषं वा दिक्ष्वष्टासु च सर्वशः ईश्वरानुग्रहाद्भूमिर् मृतांश्च ग्रसते तु तान्
Their urine and feces, in all eight directions, are absorbed by the earth through the favor of the Lord, and the earth consumes their dead as well.
रक्षःपिशाचा यक्षाश्च सर्वे हैमवतास्तु ते हेमकूटे तु विज्ञेया गन्धर्वाः साप्सरोगणाः
All the rakshasas, pisachas, and yakshas are from the Himalayas; on Hemakuta are known the gandharvas together with groups of apsarases.
सर्वे नागा निषेवन्ते शेषवासुकितक्षकाः महामेरौ त्रयस्त्रिंशत् क्रीडन्ते यज्ञियाः शुभाः
All the serpents—Śeṣa, Vāsuki, Takṣaka—dwell there; on great Meru, thirty-three auspicious and sacrificial beings sport.
नीलवैडूर्ययुक्ते ऽस्मिन् सिद्धा ब्रह्मर्षयो ऽवसन् दैत्यानां दानवानां च श्वेतः पर्वत उच्यते
On this mountain adorned with sapphire and cat’s-eye gems, perfected beings and Brahmarṣis reside; among the Daityas and Dānavas, the white mountain is renowned.
शृङ्गवान् पर्वतश्रेष्ठः पितॄणां प्रतिसंचरः इत्येतानि मयोक्तानि नववर्षाणि भारते
Śṛṅgavān, the foremost of mountains, is the path of return for the ancestors; thus have I described the nine regions of Bhārata.
भूतैरपि निविष्टानि गतिमन्ति ध्रुवाणि च तेषां वृद्धिर्बहुविधा दृश्यते देवमानुषैः अशक्या परिसंख्यातुं श्रद्धेया च बुभूषता
These are inhabited even by spirits, possessing movement and stability; their growth is seen in many forms by gods and humans, impossible to enumerate and worthy of faith for the seeker.
चरितं बुधपुत्रस्य जनार्दन मया श्रुतम् श्रुतः श्राद्धविधिः पुण्यः सर्वपापप्रणाशनः
O Janārdana, I have heard the deeds of Budha’s son, and the sacred rite of Śrāddha, which destroys all sins.
धेन्वाः प्रसूयमानायाः फलं दानस्य मे श्रुतम् कृष्णाजिनप्रदानं च वृषोत्सर्गस्तथैव च
I have heard of the fruit of giving a cow at the time of her calving, the gift of a black antelope skin, and likewise the release of a bull.
श्रुत्वा रूपं नरेन्द्रस्य बुधपुत्रस्य केशव कौतूहलं समुत्पन्नं तन्ममाचक्ष्व पृच्छतः
Having heard of the form of the king, Budha’s son, O Keśava, curiosity has arisen in me; tell me of it as I ask.
केन कर्मविपाकेन स तु राजा पुरूरवाः अवाप तादृशं रूपं सौभाग्यमपि चोत्तमम्
By what action and its result did that king, Purūravas, obtain such a form and also supreme good fortune?
देवांस्त्रिभुवनश्रेष्ठान् गन्धर्वांश्च मनोरमान् उर्वशी संमता त्यक्त्वा सर्वभावेन तं नृपम्
Urvaśī, esteemed among the gods, the best of the three worlds, and the enchanting Gandharvas, abandoned all for that king with her whole being.
शृणु कर्मविपाकेन येन राजा पुरूरवाः अवाप तादृशं रूपं सौभाग्यमपि चोत्तमम्
Hear by what action and its result King Purūravas obtained such a form and also supreme good fortune.
अतीते जन्मनि पुरा यो ऽयं राजा पुरूरवाः पुरूरवा इति ख्यातो मद्रदेशाधिपो हि सः
In a former birth, that king Purūravas, famed as Purūravas, was the lord of the Madra land.
चाक्षुषस्यान्वये राजा चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे मनोः स वै नृपगुणैर्युक्तः केवलं रूपवर्जितः
In the lineage of Cākṣuṣa, during the interval of Cākṣuṣa Manu, that king was endowed with royal virtues, but was lacking in beauty.
