प्राग्ज्योतिषाश्च पुण्ड्राश्च विदेहास्ताम्रलिप्तकाः शाल्वमागधगोनर्दाः प्राच्या जनपदाः स्मृताः
Prāgjyotiṣas, Puṇḍras, Videhas, Tāmraliptakas, Śālvas, Māgadhas, and Gonardas—these are the peoples of the eastern region.
तेषां परे जनपदा दक्षिणापथवासिनः पाण्ड्याश्च केरलाश्चैव चोलाः कुल्यास्तथैव च
Beyond them are the peoples dwelling in the southern region: the Pāṇḍyas, Keralas, Colas, and Kulyas as well.
सेतुकाः सूतिकाश्चैव कुपथां वाजिवासिकाः नवराष्ट्रा माहिषिकाः कलिङ्गाश्चैव सर्वशः
The Setukas, Sutikas, Kupathas, Vajivasikas, Navarashtras, Mahishikas, and all the Kalingas.
कारूषाश्च सहैषीका आटव्याः शबरास्तथा पुलिन्दा विन्ध्यपुषिका वैदर्भा दण्डकैः सह
The Karushas along with the Aishikas, the Atavyas, the Shabaras, the Pulindas, the Vindhyapushikas, the Vaidarbhas together with the Dandakas.
कुलीयाश्च सिरालाश्च रूपसास् तापसैः सह तथा तैत्तिरिकाश्चैव सर्वे कारस्करास्तथा
The Kuliya and Sirala peoples, the Rupasas together with the Tapasas, and likewise all the Taittirikas and the Karaskaras.
वासिक्याश्चैव ये चान्ये ये चैवान्तरनर्मदाः भारुकच्छाः समाहेयाः सह सारस्वतैस्तथा
The Vasikyas and others, and those who dwell between the Narmada rivers, the Bharukacchas, the Samaheyas, together with the Sarasvatas.
काच्छीकाश्चैव सौराष्ट्रा आनर्ता अर्बुदैः सह इत्येते अपरान्तास्तु शृणु ये विन्ध्यवासिनः
The Kacchikas, the Saurashtras, the Anartas together with the Arbudas—these are the peoples of the western lands; now hear of those who dwell in the Vindhya region.
मालवाश्च करूषाश्च मेकलाश्चोत्कलैः सह औण्ड्रा माषा दशार्णाश्च भोजाः किष्किन्धकैः सह
The Malavas, the Karushas, the Mekalas together with the Utkalas, the Aundras, the Mashas, the Dasharnas, the Bhojas together with the Kishkindhakas.
स्तोशलाः कोसलाश्चैव त्रैपुरा वैदिशास्तथा तुमुरास् तुम्बराश्चैव पद्गमा नैषधैः सह
The Stoshalas, the Kosalas, the Tripuras, the Vaidishas, the Tumuras, the Tumbaras, the Padgamas together with the Naishadhas.
अरूपाः शौण्डिकेराश्च वीतिहोत्रा अवन्तयः एते जनपदाः ख्याता विन्ध्यपृष्ठनिवासिनः
The Arupas, the Shaundikeras, the Vitihotras, the Avantis—these are the renowned peoples dwelling on the slopes of the Vindhya.
अतो देशान्प्रवक्ष्यामि पर्वताश्रयिणश्च ये निराहाराः सर्वगाश्च कुपथा अपथास्तथा
Now I will describe the regions inhabited by those who dwell in the mountains, who are without sustenance, who roam everywhere, and who follow difficult and trackless paths.
कुथप्रावरणाश्चैव ऊर्णादवाः समुद्गकाः त्रिगर्ता मण्डलाश्चैव किराताश्चामरैः सह
Those who wear garments of coarse cloth, those clothed in wool, the Samudgakas, the Trigartas, the Mandalas, and the Kiratas together with the Amaras.
चत्वारि भारते वर्षे युगानि मुनयो ऽब्रुवन् कृतं त्रेता द्वापरं च कलिश्चेति चतुर्युगम् तेषां निसर्गं वक्ष्यामि उपरिष्टाच्च कृत्स्नशः
The sages have spoken of four ages in the land of Bharata: Krita, Treta, Dvapara, and Kali—the four yugas. I will describe their nature to you, and also explain them fully.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु ऋषय उत्तरं पुनरेव ते शुश्रूषवस्तमूचुस्ते प्रकामं लौमहर्षणिम्
Having heard this, the sages once again eagerly addressed Lomaharshana, desiring to listen further.
यच्च किम्पुरुषं वर्षं हरिवर्षं तथैव च आचक्ष्व नो यथातत्त्वं कीर्तितं भारतं त्वया
Tell us, as it truly is, about the land of Kimpurusha and also Harivarsha, as you have described Bharata.
जम्बूखण्डस्य विस्तारं तथान्येषां विदांवर द्वीपानां वासिनां तेषां वृक्षाणां प्रब्रवीहि नः
Tell us, O learned one, the extent of Jambudvipa and of the other islands, their inhabitants, and their trees.
पृष्टस्त्वेवं तदा विप्रैर् यथाप्रश्नं विशेषतः उवाच ऋषिभिर्दृष्टं पुराणाभिमतं तथा
Thus questioned by the sages, he replied in detail according to their queries, relating what had been seen by the sages and esteemed in the Puranas.
शुश्रूषवस्तु यद्विप्राः शुश्रूषध्वमतन्द्रिताः जम्बूवर्षः किम्पुरुषः सुमहानन्दनोपमः
O Brahmins eager to hear, listen attentively: Jambudvipa and Kimpurusha are exceedingly delightful, comparable to great joy.
दश वर्षसहस्राणि स्थितिः किम्पुरुषे स्मृता जायन्ते मानवास्तत्र सुतप्तकनकप्रभाः
In Kimpurusha, a lifespan of ten thousand years is said to prevail; there, people are born with the radiance of well-refined gold.
वर्षे किम्पुरुषे पुण्ये प्लक्षो मधुवहः स्मृतः तस्य किम्पुरुषाः सर्वे पिबन्तो रसमुत्तमम्
In the blessed land of Kimpurusha, the Plaksha tree is renowned for its honey; all the Kimpurushas drink its most excellent sap.
अनामया ह्यशोकाश्च नित्यं मुदितमानसाः सुवर्णवर्णाश्च नराः स्त्रियश्चाप्सरसः स्मृताः
Indeed, men and women there are free from disease and sorrow, always joyful in mind, golden in color, and the women are remembered as apsarases.
ततः परं किम्पुरुषाद् धरिवर्षं प्रचक्षते महारजतसंकाशा जायन्ते यत्र मानवाः
Beyond that, after Kimpurusha, they speak of Harivarsha, where people are born with the radiance of great silver.
देवलोकच्युताः सर्वे बहुरूपाश्च सर्वशः हरिवर्षे नराः सर्वे पिबन्तीक्षुरसं शुभम्
All the people in Harivarsha have fallen from the world of the gods, possessing many forms in every way, and all drink the auspicious juice of sugarcane.
न जरा बाधते तत्र तेन जीवन्ति ते चिरम् एकादश सहस्राणि तेषामायुः प्रकीर्तितम्
Old age does not afflict them there, so they live long; their lifespan is said to be eleven thousand years.
मध्यमं तन्मया प्रोक्तं नाम्ना वर्षमिलावृतम् न तत्र सूर्यस्तपति न च जानन्ति मानवाः
I have described the middle region, named Ilavrita, where the sun does not shine, nor do the people know it.
चन्द्रसूर्यौ सनक्षत्राव् अप्रकाशाविलावृते पद्मप्रभाः पद्मवर्णाः पद्मपत्त्रनिभेक्षणाः
In Ilavrita, the moon and sun, along with the stars, do not shine; the people have the radiance of lotuses, are lotus-colored, and their eyes resemble lotus petals.
पद्मगन्धाश्च जायन्ते तत्र सर्वे च मानवाः जम्बूफलरसाहारा अनिष्पन्दाः सुगन्धिनः
There, all the people are born with the fragrance of lotuses, they eat the juice of jambū fruits, are motionless, and possess a pleasant scent.
देवलोकच्युताः सर्वे महारजतवाससः त्रयोदश सहस्राणि वर्षाणां ते नरोत्तमाः
All are fallen from the world of the gods, clothed in great silver, and those excellent men live for thirteen thousand years.
आयुष्प्रमाणं जीवन्ति ये तु वर्ष इलावृते मेरोस्तु दक्षिणे पार्श्वे निषधस्योत्तरेण वा
Those who live in Ilavrita, on the southern side of Meru or north of Nishadha, have the same measure of lifespan.
सुदर्शनो नाम महाञ् जम्बूवृक्षः सनातनः नित्यपुष्पफलोपेतः सिद्धचारणसेवितः
There is a great, eternal jambū tree named Sudarshana, always adorned with flowers and fruits, served by siddhas and charanas.
