Because of his similarity in color, he was called Sāvarṇi, son of Manu Vaivasvata; then, in order, Śani, Tapatī, and Viṣṭi were also born.
In Chāyā, the radiant one begot offspring, thinking she was Saṃjñā; Chāyā showed greater affection for her own children than for Manu.
Manu, the elder, did not notice, but Yama, overcome by anger, then threatened her, raising his right foot.
Chāyā cursed Yama: 'This one foot of yours, wounded and afflicted with worms, shall become the source of pus and blood.'
Yama, angered by the curse, informed his father: 'Without cause, I have been cursed by my mother, O god, in her wrath.'
Because of my childishness, I once raised my foot slightly; though Manu tried to restrain her, she gave me a curse, O Lord.
That woman is hardly our mother, for I am ruined by her curse; even the god said again to Yama: 'What shall I do, O wise one?'
Who does not suffer from folly, or else from the chain of actions? If even existence cannot be avoided, what can be said of other creatures?
The rooster was given to devour worms; it will remove moisture and blood, and consume the offspring.
Thus addressed, Yama, renowned, undertook severe austerity at the sacred Gokarna, subsisting on leaves and wind, out of detachment.
He worshipped Mahadeva for tens of thousands of years, and Mahadeva, pleased, granted him a boon, O bearers of the trident.
He chose the guardianship of the world, the rulership of the ancestors' realm, and the examination of the world, which is composed of righteousness and unrighteousness.
Thus he attained the guardianship of the world from the wielder of the trident, the lordship over the ancestors, and the oversight of righteousness and unrighteousness, O sinless one.
Then Vivasvan, knowing the actions of Samjna, went to Tvastr and, angered, explained everything.
Then Tvastr spoke to him, O best of twice-born, first with soothing words: 'Your greatness, O lord, is unbearable, it dispels intense darkness.'
Assuming the form of a mare, she came to me; I restrained her, and so did you, O Sun.
Because, without recognition, she came to me, therefore you are not fit to enter my abode.
Thus addressed, she departed for the desert land, blameless, assuming the form of a mare, and settled upon the earth.
Therefore, grant me your favor, if I am worthy of your grace; I will remove your radiance, placing it in a device, O Sun.
I will make your form delightful to the worlds, O Lord. Thus spoken by Ravi, he circled the Sun.
He separated that radiance, fashioned the discus for Vishnu, the trident for Rudra, and the thunderbolt, greater than Indra's.
Tvastr made an incomparable form, with a thousand rays, for the destruction of demons and danavas, except for the feet, which were great.
He could not bear to look again upon that form of the Sun as feet; therefore, in images as well, no one should ever fashion the feet.
Whoever does so attains a most sinful and condemned state, suffers from leprosy, and lives in this world afflicted with sorrow.
Therefore, one who desires righteousness, pleasure, or wealth should never, in any temple or painting, depict the feet of the wise Lord of gods.
Then that blessed Lord, the king of the immortals, went to the earthly realm, seized by desire, and longed for the face of the Sun.
Assuming the form of a horse, enveloped in great brilliance, Saṃjñā was overcome with agitation and fear in her mind.
From her nostrils was emitted that seed, suspecting it to be from another; from that seed, the Ashvins were certainly born.
Because they were born as twins, they are called the Dasras; since they emerged from the nostrils, they are known as the Nāsatyas. After a long time, realizing this, the god attained supreme satisfaction.
She ascended to heaven in a celestial chariot, joyful with her husband. Even now, Sāvarṇi Manu dwells on Mount Meru, rich in austerity. By the power of his penance, Shani attained equality among the planets.
