गन्धर्वैश्च पुरा दुग्धा वसुधा साप्सरोगणैः वत्सं चैत्ररथं कृत्वा गन्धान्पद्मदले तथा
The earth was milked by the gandharvas and groups of apsarases, making Citraratha the calf, and the essence was fragrance, on lotus leaves.
दोग्धा वररुचिर्नाम नाट्यवेदस्य पारगः गिरिभिर्वसुधा दुग्धा रत्नानि विविधानि च
Vararuci, master of the Nāṭyaveda, was the milker; the earth was milked by the mountains, yielding various gems.
औषधानि च दिव्यानि दोग्धा मेरुर्महाचलः वत्सो ऽभूद्धिमवांस् तत्र पात्रं शैलमयं पुनः
Meru, the great mountain, was the milker of divine herbs; Himavat was the calf, and the vessel was again made of stone.
वृक्षैश्च वसुधा दुग्धा क्षीरं छिन्नप्ररोहणम् पालाशपात्रे दोग्धा तु शालः पुष्पलताकुलः
The earth was milked by the trees, yielding sap for cut shoots; the vessel was made of palāśa, and the milker was Śāla, full of flowering creepers.
प्लक्षो ऽभवत्ततो वत्सः सर्ववृक्षो धनाधिपः एवमन्यैश्च वसुधा तदा दुग्धा यथेप्सितम्
Plakṣa then became the calf; the lord of all trees was the milker; thus, the earth was milked by others as desired.
आयुर् धनानि सौख्यं च पृथौ राज्यं प्रशासति न दरिद्रस्तदा कश्चिन् न रोगी न च पापकृत्
While Pṛthu ruled the kingdom, there was long life, wealth, and happiness; at that time, no one was poor, sick, or wicked.
नोपसर्गभयं किंचित् पृथौ राजनि शासति नित्यं प्रमुदिता लोका दुःखशोकविवर्जिताः
While King Pṛthu ruled, there was no fear of calamity; the people were always joyful, free from suffering and sorrow.
धनुष्कोट्या च शैलेन्द्रान् उत्सार्य स महाबलः भुवस्तलं समं चक्रे लोकानां हितकाम्यया
With the tip of his bow, that mighty one drove away the great mountains and made the surface of the earth level, desiring the welfare of the people.
न पुरग्रामदुर्गाणि न चायुधधरा नराः क्षयातिशयदुःखं च नार्थशास्त्रस्य चादरः
There were no cities, villages, or fortresses, nor men bearing arms; there was no excessive suffering from decay, nor any concern for the science of wealth.
धर्मैकवासना लोकाः पृथौ राज्यं प्रशासति कथितानि च पात्राणि यत्क्षीरं च मया तव
When Pṛthu ruled the kingdom, the people had only righteousness as their inclination; and the vessels and milk I have described to you.
येषां यत्र रुचिस्तत्तद् देयं तेभ्यो विजानता यज्ञश्राद्धेषु सर्वेषु मया तुभ्यं निवेदितम्
Whatever their desire was, that was given to them by the discerning one; in all sacrifices and ancestral offerings, all was presented by me to you.
दुहितृत्वं गता यस्मात् पृथोर्धर्मवतो मही तदानुरागयोगाच्च पृथिवी विश्रुता बुधैः
Because the virtuous Pṛthu accepted her as his daughter, and due to their mutual affection, the earth became renowned among the wise as Pṛthivī.
आदित्यवंशमखिलं वद सूत यथाक्रमम् सोमवंशं च तत्त्वज्ञ यथावद्वक्तुमर्हसि
O Sūta, recount the entire lineage of the Sun, in order, and also the lineage of the Moon; you, who know the truth, should narrate it properly.
विवस्वान्कश्यपात् पूर्वम् अदित्यामभवत् सुतः तस्य पत्नीत्रयं तद्वत् संज्ञा राज्ञी प्रभा तथा
Vivasvān was formerly born from Kaśyapa and Aditi; he had three wives: Saṃjñā, the queen, and also Prabhā.
रैवतस्य सुता राज्ञी रेवतं सुषुवे सुतम् प्रभा प्रभातं सुषुवे त्वाष्ट्री संज्ञा तथा मनुम्
The queen, daughter of Raivata, gave birth to a son named Revata; Prabhā bore Prabhāta, and Tvaṣṭrī Saṃjñā bore Manu.
यमश्च यमुना चैव यमलौ तु बभूवतुः ततस्तेजोमयं रूपम् असहन्ती विवस्वतः
Yama and Yamunā were twins; unable to endure the blazing form of Vivasvān,
नारीमुत्पादयामास स्वशरीरादनिन्दिताम् त्वाष्ट्री स्वरूपरूपेण नाम्ना छायेति भामिनी
Tvaṣṭrī created an unblemished woman from her own body, resembling herself in form, a radiant one named Chāyā.
पुरतः संस्थितां दृष्ट्वा संज्ञा तां प्रत्यभाषत छाये तं भज भर्तारम् अस्मदीयं वरानने
Seeing her standing before her, Saṃjñā spoke to her: 'O beautiful one, serve my husband as your own.'
अपत्यानि मदीयानि मातृस्नेहेन पालय तथेत्युक्त्वा तु सा देवम् अगमत् क्वापि सुव्रता
'Care for my children with a mother's affection,' she said, and then that virtuous lady departed somewhere to the gods.
कामयामास देवो ऽपि संज्ञेयमिति चादरात् जनयामास तस्यां तु पुत्रं च मनुरूपिणम्
The god also desired her, thinking she was Saṃjñā, and with affection begot in her a son resembling Manu.
सवर्णत्वाच्च सावर्णिर् मनोर्वैवस्वतस्य च ततः शनिं च तपतीं विष्टिं चैव क्रमेण तु
Because of his similarity in color, he was called Sāvarṇi, son of Manu Vaivasvata; then, in order, Śani, Tapatī, and Viṣṭi were also born.
छायायां जनयामास संज्ञेयमिति भास्करः छाया स्वपुत्रे ऽभ्यधिकं स्नेहं चक्रे मनौ तथा
In Chāyā, the radiant one begot offspring, thinking she was Saṃjñā; Chāyā showed greater affection for her own children than for Manu.
पूर्वो मनुस्तु चक्षाम न यमः क्रोधमूर्छितः संतर्जयामास तदा पादमुद्यम्य दक्षिणम्
Manu, the elder, did not notice, but Yama, overcome by anger, then threatened her, raising his right foot.
शशाप च यमं छाया सक्षतः कृमिसंयुतः पादो ऽयमेको भविता पूयशोणितविस्रवः
Chāyā cursed Yama: 'This one foot of yours, wounded and afflicted with worms, shall become the source of pus and blood.'
निवेदयामास पितुर् यमः शापादमर्षितः निष्कारणमहं शप्तो मात्रा देव सकोपया
Yama, angered by the curse, informed his father: 'Without cause, I have been cursed by my mother, O god, in her wrath.'
बालभावान्मया किंचिद् उद्यतश् चरणः सकृत् मनुना वार्यमाणापि मम शापम् अदाद् विभो
Because of my childishness, I once raised my foot slightly; though Manu tried to restrain her, she gave me a curse, O Lord.
प्रायो न माता सास्माकं शापेनाहं यतो हतः देवो ऽप्याह यमं भूयः किं करोमि महामते
That woman is hardly our mother, for I am ruined by her curse; even the god said again to Yama: 'What shall I do, O wise one?'
मौर्ख्यात्कस्य न दुःखं स्याद् अथवा कर्मसंततिः अनिवार्या भवस्यापि का कथान्येषु जन्तुषु
Who does not suffer from folly, or else from the chain of actions? If even existence cannot be avoided, what can be said of other creatures?
कृकवाकुर्मया दत्तो यः कृमीन्भक्षयिष्यति क्लेदं च रुधिरं चैव वत्सायम् अपनेष्यति
The rooster was given to devour worms; it will remove moisture and blood, and consume the offspring.
एवमुक्तस्तपस्तेपे यमस्तीव्रं महायशाः गोकर्णतीर्थे वैराग्यात् फलपत्त्रानिलाशनः
Thus addressed, Yama, renowned, undertook severe austerity at the sacred Gokarna, subsisting on leaves and wind, out of detachment.
