'To Mādhava' at the chest of Viṣṇu, 'To the One with longing at the throat,' 'To Śrīdhara' at the face, and 'To Keśava' at the hair, O Nārada.
'To Śārṅgadhara' at the back, 'To Varada' at the ears, and with his own names—Śaṅkha, Cakra, Asi, Gadā, and Padma at the hands—one should worship the head as 'To the All-Self,' O brāhmaṇa, saying 'Salutations.'
Making, as able, a golden fish together with a lotus, and placing it with a water pot in front, the wise person should set it up.
A vessel of jaggery mixed with sesame, wrapped in white cloth, should be kept; at night, one should keep vigil with stories from the epics and such.
At dawn, one should offer to a brāhmaṇa with a family a golden lotus along with a water pot, presenting it as the deity.
Just as you, O Lord, are never separated from all your powers, so too, uplift me from the mire of endless suffering in saṃsāra.
The images of the ten incarnations, as well as Dattātreya and Vyāsa with a lotus, should be given each month in order, avoiding heretics, for as many years as possible.
Having completed thus, according to one's ability, twelve observances of the twelfth day, at the end of the year, one should give to the guru a bed with a salt mountain and a cow, O best of sages.
One who is able should give a village or a field with a house, having duly honored the guru with garments, ornaments, and decorations.
After feeding other excellent brāhmaṇas according to one's means, one should satisfy them with gifts of garments, cows, heaps of jewels, and wealth; one with little means should perform as able, little by little, throughout the year.
And even one who is utterly destitute but devoted to Mādhava should perform this for two years by worship with flowers.
Whoever, by this method, observes the Vibhūti Dvādaśī vow, becomes free from sin and delivers a hundred ancestors.
For a hundred thousand births, one does not become subject to the fruit of sorrow; nor does disease befall him, nor poverty, nor bondage—whether he is a devotee of Vishnu or of Shiva, so it is in every birth.
For as many as one hundred and eight thousand ages, O Brahman, he dwells in heaven, and again becomes a king on earth.
In the ancient Rāthantara kalpa, there was a king named Puṣpavāhana, renowned among the worlds, whose brilliance was like the sun.
By his austerity, O Nārada, he pleased the Four-faced One, who gave him a golden lotus, which could go wherever he wished, O sage.
Accompanied by all the people and the city-dwellers, the king then freely roamed the islands and the world of the gods as he desired.
At the beginning of the kalpa, the seventh island was inhabited by him, and because it was honored in the world, it is called Puṣkara Island.
Because the god Brahmā gave him a vehicle in the form of a lotus, the gods and demons therefore called him Puṣpavāhana.
There is nothing inaccessible to him, even in the three worlds, because of the power of his austerity while seated on Brahmā’s lotus. His wife, O chief of sages, was unrivaled, surrounded by thousands of women, named Lāvaṇyavatī, most beloved of Bhava, like Pārvatī.
He had ten thousand sons, all righteous and foremost among archers. Observing all this, the king was repeatedly amazed. Seeing the eminent sage, the son of Pracetas, who had arrived, he spoke these words:
Why has this pure glory arisen, honored by gods and mortals, victorious over all, and why do I, with little austerity, possess as wife the most beautiful among all women, and this lotus-palace given to me by the Creator, O chief of sages?
Even if a hundred million kings, with their ministers, elephants, chariots, and hosts of people, enter it, no one knows where they have gone, just as the moon disappears among the stars shining all around in the sky.
Therefore, what is the cause of all this—whether from my own actions, or those of my sons, or of this lady? Tell me, O Pracetas, what is the auspicious reason for all these complete results?
Then the sage, observing the extraordinary and wondrous events that had occurred to the king, spoke: In a former birth, you were born in a family of hunters, exceedingly harsh, and you committed sinful acts daily.
Your body was then that of a human, but joined with the limbs of animals, surrounded on all sides by foul-smelling serpents. You had no friends, no sons, no relatives, no father, no sister, nor mother—thus you were cursed.
The woman you loved most turned away from you, O king; she became extremely hostile, like a terrible drought. Sometimes, tormented by hunger, you found nothing at all—no grain, fruit, or meat.
Then you saw a great lake filled with lotuses, though its banks were muddy. Taking many lotuses from there, you went to the city called Vaidiśa.
In order to sell those lotuses, you wandered throughout the entire city, but that day, no one was found to buy them. Exhausted and greatly afflicted by hunger, you sat down.
You sat with your wife in the courtyard of a house, and then, during the night, you heard a great auspicious sound.
