अर्घ्यं दत्त्वा विसृजाथ निशि तैलविवर्जितम् भुञ्जीत वत्सरान्ते तु काञ्चनं कमलोत्तमम् पुरुषं च यथाशक्त्या कारयेद्द्विभुजं तथा
After offering arghya, one should release it at night, free from oil; at the end of the year, one should prepare a golden, excellent lotus and a two-armed man according to one's ability.
सुवर्णशृङ्गीं कपिलां महार्घ्यां रौप्यैः खुरैः कांस्यदोहां सवत्साम् पूर्णे गुडस्योपरि ताम्रपात्रे निधाय पद्मं पुरुषं च दद्यात्
A tawny cow with golden horns, of great value, with silver hooves, a bronze milking vessel, together with her calf, filled with jaggery in a copper pot—these, along with the lotus and the man, should be given.
सम्पूज्य रक्ताम्बरमाल्यधूपैर् द्विजं च रक्तैरथ हेमशृङ्गैः संकल्पयित्वा पुरुषं सपद्मं दद्यादनेकव्रतदानकाय अव्यङ्गरूपाय जितेन्द्रियाय कुटुम्बिने देयमनुद्धताय
Having duly honored a Brahmin with red garments, garlands, and incense, and having resolved to give the man and lotus with golden horns, one should give them to a person who has performed many vows and gifts, who is free from defects, self-controlled, a householder, and humble.
नमो नमः पापविनाशनाय विश्वात्मने सप्ततुरंगमाय सामर्ग्यजुर्धामनिधे विधात्रे भवाब्धिपोताय जगत्सवित्रे
Salutations again and again to the destroyer of sin, the soul of the universe, the one with seven horses, the treasure of the Sāma, Ṛk, and Yajur Vedas, the creator, the boat across the ocean of existence, the nourisher of the world.
इत्यनेन विधिना समाचरेद् अब्दभेकमिह यस्तु मानवः सो ऽधिरोहति विनष्टकल्मषः सूर्यधाम धुतचामरावलिः
Whoever, here, performs the year-long vow in this manner, that man, his sins destroyed, ascends to the abode of the sun, fanned by rows of white chowries.
धर्मसंक्षयमवाप्य भूपतिः शोकदुःखभयरोगवर्जितः द्वीपसप्तकपतिः पुनः पुनर् वर्ममूर्तिर् अमितौजसा युतः
Having attained the fullness of righteousness, the king becomes free from sorrow, suffering, fear, and disease; he becomes lord of seven islands, again and again, endowed with an invincible form and immeasurable energy.
या च भर्तृगुरुदेवतत्परा वेदमूर्तिदिननक्तमाचरेत् सापि लोकममरेशवन्दिता याति नारद रवेर्न संशयः
And a woman who is devoted to her husband, elders, and deities, who practices the embodiment of the Veda day and night—she too, O Nārada, attains the world honored by the immortals, as surely as the sun rises; there is no doubt.
यः पठेदपि शृणोति मानवः पठ्यमानमथ वानुमोदते सो ऽपि शक्रभुवनस्थितो ऽमरैः पूज्यते वसति चाक्षयं दिवि
Whoever recites, hears, or even approves the recitation of this, that person too is worshipped by the immortals in Indra’s realm and dwells eternally in heaven.
अथान्यदपि वक्ष्यामि संक्रान्त्युद्यापने फलम् यदक्षयं परे लोके सर्वकामफलप्रदम्
Now I shall also declare the inexhaustible fruit of observing the Saṅkrānti and Udyāpana rites, which bestow all desired results in the next world.
अयने विषुवे वापि संक्रान्तिव्रतमाचरेत् पूर्वेद्युरेकभक्तेन दन्तधावनपूर्वकम् संक्रान्तिवासरे प्रातस् तिलैः स्नानं विधीयते
One should observe the Saṅkrānti vow during the solstice or equinox; on the previous day, after brushing the teeth and taking only one meal, on the day of Saṅkrānti, one must bathe in the morning with sesame seeds as prescribed.
रविसंक्रमणे भूमौ चन्दनेनाष्टपत्त्रकम् पद्मं सकर्णिकं कुर्यात् तस्मिन्नावाहयेद्रविम्
At the sun’s transition, one should make an eight-petaled lotus with sandalwood paste on the ground, with a central pericarp, and there invoke the Sun.
कर्णिकायां न्यसेत्सूर्यम् आदित्यं पूर्वतस्ततः नम उष्णार्चिषे याम्ये नमो ऋङ्मण्डलाय च
In the pericarp, one should place Sūrya, Āditya to the east, then offer salutations to the hot-rayed one, to Yāmya, and to the circle of the Ṛg Veda.
नमः सवित्रे नैरृत्ये वारुणे तपनं पुनः वायव्ये तु भगं न्यस्य पुनः पुनरथार्चयेत्
Salutations to Savitṛ in the southwest, to Varuṇa, and again to Tapana; in the northwest, place Bhaga, and worship each again and again.
मार्तण्डमुत्तरे विष्णुम् ईशाने विन्यसेत्सदा गन्धमाल्यफलैर्भक्ष्यैः स्थण्डिले पूजयेत्ततः
In the north, place Mārtaṇḍa; in the northeast, always place Viṣṇu; then worship on the altar with fragrant substances, garlands, fruits, and offerings.
द्विजाय सोदकुम्भं च घृतपात्रं हिरण्मयम् कमलं च यथाशक्त्या कारयित्वा निवेदयेत्
One should, according to ability, prepare and offer to a Brāhmaṇa a water pot, a vessel of ghee made of gold, and a lotus.
चन्दनोदकपुष्पैश्च देवायार्घ्यं न्यसेद्भुवि विश्वाय विश्वरूपाय विश्वधाम्ने स्वयम्भुवे नमो ऽनन्त नमो धात्रे ऋक्सामयजुषां पते
With sandalwood, water, and flowers, one should offer arghya to the deity on the ground, saying: 'Salutation to the All, to the One of all forms, to the Abode of all, to the Self-born, to the Infinite, to the Creator, to the Lord of Ṛk, Sāman, and Yajus.'
अनेन विधिना सर्वं मासि मासि समाचरेत् वत्सरान्ते ऽथवा कुर्यात् सर्वं द्वादशधा नरः
One should perform all this every month according to this procedure, or at the end of the year, or do everything twelvefold.
संवत्सरान्ते घृतपायसेन संतर्प्य वह्निं द्विजपुंगवांश्च कुम्भान्पुनर्द्वादश धेनुयुक्तान् सरत्नहैरण्मयपद्मयुक्तान्
At the end of the year, having satisfied the fire and the foremost Brāhmaṇas with ghee and milk, one should again offer twelve water pots, each with a cow, adorned with jewels and golden lotuses.
पयस्विनीः शीलवतीश्च दद्याद् धर्मैः शृङ्गैः रौप्यखुरैश्च युक्ताः गावो ऽष्ट वा सप्त सकांस्यदोहा माल्याम्बरा वा चतुरो ऽप्यशक्तः दौर्गत्ययुक्तः कपिलामथैकां निवेदयेद्ब्राह्मणपुंगवाय
He should give cows that yield milk and are of good character, with righteous horns and silver hooves—eight or seven, with bronze milking vessels and adorned with garlands and cloths; or, if unable, at least four; if afflicted by poverty, then one tawny cow should be offered to a foremost Brāhmaṇa.
हैमीं च दद्यात्पृथिवीं सशेषाम् आकार्य रूप्यामथ वा च ताम्रीम् पैष्टीमशक्तः प्रतिमां विधाय सौवर्णसूर्येण समं प्रदद्यात् न वित्तशाठ्यं पुरुषो ऽत्र कुर्यात् कुर्वन्नधो याति न संशयो ऽत्र
He should also give the earth adorned with gold, or if unable, with silver or copper; if even that is not possible, he should make an image and give it together with a golden sun. No one should act with deceit regarding wealth here; one who does so falls down, there is no doubt.
यावन्महेन्द्रप्रमुखैर्नगेन्द्रैः पृथ्वा च सप्ताब्धियुतेह तिष्ठेत् तावत्स गन्धर्वगणैर् अशेषैः सम्पूज्यते नारद नाकपृष्ठे
For as long as the earth, together with the seven oceans, endures with the great mountains headed by Mahendra, for that long, O Nārada, he is honored by all the hosts of Gandharvas on the summit of heaven.
ततस्तु कर्मक्षयमाप्य सप्तद्वीपाधिपः स्यात्कुलशीलयुक्तः सृष्टेर्मुखे ऽव्यङ्गवपुः सभार्यः प्रभूतपुत्रान्वयवन्दिताङ्घ्रिः
Then, having exhausted his karma, he becomes lord of the seven continents, endowed with a noble family and good conduct, possessing a flawless body at the beginning of creation, with his wife, honored by many sons and descendants at his feet.
इति पठति शृणोति वाथ भक्त्या विधिमखिलं रविसंक्रमस्य पुण्यम् मतिमपि च ददाति सो ऽपि देवैर् अमरपतेर्भवने प्रपूज्यते च
Thus, whoever recites or hears with devotion the entire procedure and merit of the Sun’s transition, and even contemplates it, is honored by the gods in the house of the lord of immortals.
शृणु नारद वक्ष्यामि विष्णोर्व्रतमनुत्तमम् विभूतिद्वादशी नाम सर्वदेवनमस्कृतम्
Hear, O Nārada, I shall declare the supreme vow of Viṣṇu, called the Vibhūti Dvādaśī, honored by all the gods.
कार्त्तिके चैत्रवैशाखे मार्गशीर्षे च फाल्गुने आषाढे वा दशम्यां तु शुक्लायां लघुभुङ्नरः कृत्वा सायन्तनीं संध्यां गृह्णीयान्नियमं बुधः
In the months of Kārttika, Caitra, Vaiśākha, Mārgaśīrṣa, Phālguna, or Āṣāḍha, on the bright tenth day, a man should eat lightly, perform the evening twilight worship, and then, being wise, undertake the vow.
एकादश्यां निराहारः समभ्यर्च्य जनार्दनम् द्वादश्यां द्विजसंयुक्तः करिष्ये भोजनं विभो
On the eleventh day, remaining without food, after duly worshipping Janārdana, I will take food on the twelfth day together with brāhmaṇas, O Lord.
तदविघ्नेन मे यातु सफलं स्याच्च केशव नमो नारायणायेति वाच्यं च स्वपता निशि
May this proceed without obstacle for me and become fruitful, O Keśava. One should say, 'Salutations to Nārāyaṇa,' before sleeping at night.
ततः प्रभात उत्थाय कृतस्नानजपः शुचिः पूजयेत्पुण्डरीकाक्षं शुक्लमाल्यानुलेपनैः
Then, rising at dawn, having bathed and recited prayers, being pure, one should worship Puṇḍarīkākṣa with white garlands and ointments.
विभूतये नमः पादाव् अशोकाय च जानुनी नमः शिवायेत्यूरू च विश्वमूर्ते नमः कटिम्
With 'Salutations to Vibhūti' at the feet, 'To Aśoka' at the knees, 'To Śiva' at the thighs, and 'To the Universal Form' at the hips.
कन्दर्पाय नमो मेढ्रम् आदित्याय नमः करौ दामोदरायेत्युदरं वासुदेवाय च स्तनौ
'Salutations to Kandarpa' at the genitals, 'To Āditya' at the hands, 'To Dāmodara' at the abdomen, and 'To Vāsudeva' at the breasts.
