इति दत्त्वा च तत्सर्वम् अलंकृत्य च भूषणैः शक्तिश्चेच्छयनं दद्यात् सर्वोपस्करसंयुतम्
Having given all this and adorned it with ornaments, if able, one should also give a bed furnished with all accessories.
अशक्तस्तु फलान्येव यथोक्तानि विधानतः तथोदकुम्भसंयुक्तौ शिवधर्मौ च काञ्चनौ
But if unable, one should give only the prescribed fruits, along with two water pots and two golden images of Shiva and Dharma.
विप्राय दत्त्वा भुञ्जीत वाग्यतस्तैलवर्जितम् अन्यान्यपि यथाशक्त्या भोजयेच्छक्तितो द्विजान्
Having given to a Brahmin, one may eat, keeping speech pure and avoiding oil; and, as able, one should also feed other Brahmins.
एतद्भागवतानां तु सौरवैष्णवयोगिनाम् शुभं सर्वफलत्यागव्रतं वेदविदो विदुः
The knowers of the Veda declare this vow of giving all fruits to be auspicious for devotees of Bhagavan, as well as for those devoted to the Sun, Vishnu, and Yoga.
नारीभिश्च यथाशक्त्या कर्तव्यं द्विजपुंगव एतस्मान्नापरं किंचिद् इह लोके परत्र च व्रतमस्ति मुनिश्रेष्ठ यदनन्तफलप्रदम्
O best of sages, this vow, which grants endless fruits, should be performed by women as able, O best of Brahmins; there is no other vow in this world or the next that surpasses it.
सौवर्णरौप्यताम्रेषु यावन्तः परमाणवः भवन्ति चूर्ण्यमानेषु फलेषु मुनिसत्तम तावद्युगसहस्राणि रुद्रलोके महीयते
O best of sages, for however many atoms are in the gold, silver, and copper when the fruits are ground, for that many thousands of ages one is honored in the world of Rudra.
एतत्समस्तकलुषापहरं जनानाम् आजीवनाय मनुजेषु च सर्वदा स्यात् जन्मान्तरेष्वपि न पुत्रवियोगदुःखम् आप्नोति धाम च पुरंदरलोकजुष्टम्
This removes all sins of people and grants long life among humans; even in future births, one does not suffer the pain of losing a child, and attains the abode enjoyed by Indra.
यो वा शृणोति पुरुषो ऽल्पधनः पठेद्वा देवालयेषु भवनेषु च धार्मिकाणाम् पापैर्वियुक्तवपुरत्र पुरं मुरारेर् आनन्दकृत्पदमुपैति मुनीन्द्र सो ऽपि
Even a poor man who hears or recites this in temples or in the homes of the righteous, O chief of sages, is freed from sins here and attains the blissful abode of Vishnu.
यदारोग्यकरं पुंसां यदनन्तफलप्रदम् यच्छान्तये च मर्त्यानां वद नन्दीश तद्व्रतम्
O Lord Nandīśa, tell me of that vow which brings health to people, bestows endless rewards, and grants peace to mortals.
यत्तद्विश्वात्मनो धाम परं ब्रह्म सनातनम् सूर्याग्निचन्द्ररूपेण तत्त्रिधा जगति स्थितम्
That supreme, eternal Brahman, the abode of the universal soul, is established in the world in three forms: as the sun, fire, and moon.
तदाराध्य पुमान्विप्र प्राप्नोति कुशलं सदा तस्मादादित्यवारेण सदा नक्ताशनो भवेत्
By worshipping that, O Brahmin, a person always attains well-being; therefore, on Sundays, one should always observe fasting at night.
यदा हस्तेन संयुक्तम् आदित्यस्य च वासरम् तदा शनिदिने कुर्याद् एकभक्तं विमत्सरः
When the day of the sun coincides with the hand, then, on a Saturday, one should eat only once, free from envy.
नक्तमादित्यवारेण भोजयित्वा द्विजोत्तमान् पत्त्रैर्द्वादशसंयुक्तं रक्तचन्दनपङ्कजम्
On Sunday night, after feeding the best of Brahmins, one should prepare a lotus with twelve leaves, using red sandalwood.
विलिख्य विन्यसेत्सूर्यं नमस्कारेण पूर्वतः दिवाकरं तथाग्नेये विवस्वन्तमतः परम्
Having inscribed and placed the sun with reverence facing east, then Divākara in the southeast, and Vivasvat thereafter.
भगं तु नैरृते देवं वरुणं पश्चिमे दले महेन्द्रमनिले तद्वद् आदित्यं च तथोत्तरे
Bhaga, the deity, in the southwest; Varuṇa on the western petal; Mahendra and Anila likewise, and Āditya on the northern side.
शान्तमीशानभागे तु नमस्कारेण विन्यसेत् कर्णिकापूर्वपत्त्रे तु सूर्यस्य तुरगान्न्यसेत्
In the northeast portion, Śānta should be placed with reverence; on the central petal, the horses of the sun should be set.
दक्षिणे ऽर्यमनामानं मार्तण्डं पश्चिमे दले उत्तरे तु रविं देवं कर्णिकायां च भास्करम्
In the south, Aryaman by name; in the west, Mārtaṇḍa on the petal; in the north, the god Ravi; and in the center, Bhāskara.
रक्तपुष्पोदकेनार्घ्यं सतिलारुणचन्दनम् तस्मिन्पद्मे ततो दद्याद् इमं मन्त्रमुदीरयेत्
One should offer arghya with water scented by red flowers, mixed with sesame and red sandalwood, into that lotus, and then recite this mantra.
कालात्मा सर्वभूतात्मा वेदात्मा विश्वतोमुखः यस्मादग्नीन्द्ररूपस्त्वम् अतः पाहि दिवाकर
Soul of time, soul of all beings, essence of the Vedas, whose face is everywhere—you who are in the forms of Agni and Indra, protect me, O Divākara.
अग्निम् ईडे नमस्तुभ्यम् इषेत्वोर्जे च भास्कर अग्न आयाहि वरद नमस्ते ज्योतिषां पते
I praise Agni; homage to you. In food and strength, O Bhāskara. O Agni, come, bestower of boons; salutations to you, lord of lights.
अर्घ्यं दत्त्वा विसृजाथ निशि तैलविवर्जितम् भुञ्जीत वत्सरान्ते तु काञ्चनं कमलोत्तमम् पुरुषं च यथाशक्त्या कारयेद्द्विभुजं तथा
After offering arghya, one should release it at night, free from oil; at the end of the year, one should prepare a golden, excellent lotus and a two-armed man according to one's ability.
सुवर्णशृङ्गीं कपिलां महार्घ्यां रौप्यैः खुरैः कांस्यदोहां सवत्साम् पूर्णे गुडस्योपरि ताम्रपात्रे निधाय पद्मं पुरुषं च दद्यात्
A tawny cow with golden horns, of great value, with silver hooves, a bronze milking vessel, together with her calf, filled with jaggery in a copper pot—these, along with the lotus and the man, should be given.
सम्पूज्य रक्ताम्बरमाल्यधूपैर् द्विजं च रक्तैरथ हेमशृङ्गैः संकल्पयित्वा पुरुषं सपद्मं दद्यादनेकव्रतदानकाय अव्यङ्गरूपाय जितेन्द्रियाय कुटुम्बिने देयमनुद्धताय
Having duly honored a Brahmin with red garments, garlands, and incense, and having resolved to give the man and lotus with golden horns, one should give them to a person who has performed many vows and gifts, who is free from defects, self-controlled, a householder, and humble.
नमो नमः पापविनाशनाय विश्वात्मने सप्ततुरंगमाय सामर्ग्यजुर्धामनिधे विधात्रे भवाब्धिपोताय जगत्सवित्रे
Salutations again and again to the destroyer of sin, the soul of the universe, the one with seven horses, the treasure of the Sāma, Ṛk, and Yajur Vedas, the creator, the boat across the ocean of existence, the nourisher of the world.
इत्यनेन विधिना समाचरेद् अब्दभेकमिह यस्तु मानवः सो ऽधिरोहति विनष्टकल्मषः सूर्यधाम धुतचामरावलिः
Whoever, here, performs the year-long vow in this manner, that man, his sins destroyed, ascends to the abode of the sun, fanned by rows of white chowries.
धर्मसंक्षयमवाप्य भूपतिः शोकदुःखभयरोगवर्जितः द्वीपसप्तकपतिः पुनः पुनर् वर्ममूर्तिर् अमितौजसा युतः
Having attained the fullness of righteousness, the king becomes free from sorrow, suffering, fear, and disease; he becomes lord of seven islands, again and again, endowed with an invincible form and immeasurable energy.
या च भर्तृगुरुदेवतत्परा वेदमूर्तिदिननक्तमाचरेत् सापि लोकममरेशवन्दिता याति नारद रवेर्न संशयः
And a woman who is devoted to her husband, elders, and deities, who practices the embodiment of the Veda day and night—she too, O Nārada, attains the world honored by the immortals, as surely as the sun rises; there is no doubt.
यः पठेदपि शृणोति मानवः पठ्यमानमथ वानुमोदते सो ऽपि शक्रभुवनस्थितो ऽमरैः पूज्यते वसति चाक्षयं दिवि
Whoever recites, hears, or even approves the recitation of this, that person too is worshipped by the immortals in Indra’s realm and dwells eternally in heaven.
अथान्यदपि वक्ष्यामि संक्रान्त्युद्यापने फलम् यदक्षयं परे लोके सर्वकामफलप्रदम्
Now I shall also declare the inexhaustible fruit of observing the Saṅkrānti and Udyāpana rites, which bestow all desired results in the next world.
अयने विषुवे वापि संक्रान्तिव्रतमाचरेत् पूर्वेद्युरेकभक्तेन दन्तधावनपूर्वकम् संक्रान्तिवासरे प्रातस् तिलैः स्नानं विधीयते
One should observe the Saṅkrānti vow during the solstice or equinox; on the previous day, after brushing the teeth and taking only one meal, on the day of Saṅkrānti, one must bathe in the morning with sesame seeds as prescribed.
