उज्ज्वालनादुज्ज्वलरुपमस्याः संजातमस्मिन्भुवनाधिपत्यम् यस्मात्कृतं तत्परिकर्म रात्राव् अनुद्धताभ्यां लवणाचलस्य
From the illumination, her radiant form arose, and rulership of the world was attained; because the ritual for the salt mountain was performed at night by those two, without pride.
तस्माच्च लोकेष्वपराजितत्वम् आरोग्यसौभाग्ययुता च लक्ष्मीः तस्मात्त्वमप्यत्र विधानपूर्वं धान्याचलादीन्दशधा कुरुष्व
Therefore, in the world, unconquered status, health, and fortune are attained; so you too, according to the prescribed rites, should offer grain mountains and others tenfold.
तथेति सत्कृत्य स धर्ममूर्तिर् वचो वसिष्ठस्य ददौ च सर्वान् धान्याचलदीञ्छतशो मुरारेर् लोकं जगामामरपूज्यमानः
Thus, honoring Vasiṣṭha's words, the righteous king gave hundreds of grain mountains and others, and went to Murāri's world, worshipped by the celestials.
पश्येदपीमानधनो ऽतिभक्त्या स्पृशेन्मनुष्यैरपि दीयमानान् शृणोति भक्त्याथ मतिं ददाति विकल्मषः सो ऽपि दिवं प्रयाति
Even a poor man, if he sees, touches, or hears of these offerings with great devotion, and gives them with pure mind, he too goes to heaven.
दुःस्वप्नं प्रशममुपैति पठ्यमानैः शैलेन्द्रैर्भवभयभेदनैर्मनुष्यैः यः कुर्यात्किमु मुनिपुंगवेह सम्यक् शान्तात्मा सकलगिरीन्द्रसम्प्रदानम्
An evil dream is pacified by recitations performed by men with the great mountains, which dispel the fear of worldly existence; then what more should a sage of tranquil mind do here, who offers all the lordly mountains?
वैशम्पायनम् आसीनम् अपृच्छच्छौनकः पुरा सर्वकामाप्तये नित्यं कथं शान्तिकपौष्टिकम्
Vaiśampāyana: Once, for the fulfillment of all desires, Śaunaka asked, as he sat, how the rites for peace and prosperity are to be performed daily.
श्रीकामः शान्तिकामो वा ग्रहयज्ञं समारभेत् वृद्ध्यायुः पुष्टिकामो वा तथैवाभिचरन्पुनः येन ब्रह्मन्विधानेन तन्मे निगदतः शृणु
One who desires wealth or peace should begin a planetary sacrifice; likewise, one who seeks increase, long life, or strength, or who wishes to counteract evil—by what procedure, O Brahman, this is to be done, listen as I declare it to you.
सर्वशास्त्राण्यनुक्रम्य संक्षिप्य ग्रन्थविस्तरम् ग्रहशान्तिं प्रवक्ष्यामि पुराणश्रुतिचोदिताम्
Having reviewed all the scriptures and summarized their extensive content, I shall now explain the pacification of the planets, as enjoined by the Purāṇas and the Vedas.
पुण्ये ऽह्नि विप्रकथिते कृत्वा ब्राह्मणवाचनम् ग्रहान्ग्रहाधिदेवांश्च स्थाप्य होमं समारभेत्
On an auspicious day, as prescribed by the Brāhmaṇas, having recited the texts, and having installed the planets and their presiding deities, one should begin the fire offering.
ग्रहयज्ञस्त्रिधा प्रोक्तः पुराणश्रुतिकोविदैः प्रथमो ऽयुतहोमः स्याल् लक्षहोमस्ततः परम्
The planetary sacrifice is declared to be threefold by those learned in the Purāṇas and Vedas: the first is the offering of ten thousand oblations, the next is one hundred thousand, and so on.
तृतीयः कोटिहोमस्तु सर्वकामफलप्रदः अयुतेनाहुतीनां च नवग्रहमखः स्मृतः
The third is the offering of ten million oblations, which grants all desired results; the sacrifice to the nine planets is said to require ten thousand offerings.
तस्य तावद्विधिं वक्ष्ये पुराणश्रुतिभाषितम् गर्तस्योत्तरपूर्वेण वितस्तिद्वयविस्तृताम्
Now I shall describe its procedure, as spoken in the Purāṇas and Vedas: to the northeast of the pit, a platform two spans wide should be prepared.
वप्रद्वयावृतां वेदिं वितस्त्युच्छ्रायसंमिताम् संस्थापनाय देवानां चतुरस्रामुदङ्मुखाम्
A square altar, facing north, surrounded by two embankments and of the same height as its width, should be established for the installation of the deities.
अग्निप्रणयनं कृत्वा तस्यामावाहयेत्सुरान् देवतानां ततः स्थाप्या विंशतिर्द्वादशाधिका
Having brought forth the fire, one should invoke the gods there; then, twenty deities, plus twelve, should be installed for the rites.
सूर्यः सोमस्तथा भौमो बुधजीवसितार्कजाः राहुः केतुरिति प्रोक्ता ग्रहा लोकहितावहाः
The Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rāhu, and Ketu—these are called the planets, bringers of welfare to the world.
मध्ये तु भास्करं विद्याल् लोहितं दक्षिणेन तु उत्तरेण गुरुं विद्याद् बुधं पूर्वोत्तरेण तु
In the center, one should place the Sun; to the south, Mars; to the north, Jupiter; and to the northeast, Mercury.
पूर्वेण भार्गवं विद्यात् सोमं दक्षिणपूर्वके पश्चिमेन शनिं विद्याद् राहुं पश्चिमदक्षिणे पश्चिमोत्तरतः केतुं स्थापयेच्छुक्लतण्डुलैः
To the east, Venus should be placed; to the southeast, the Moon; to the west, Saturn; to the southwest, Rāhu; and to the northwest, Ketu, using white rice grains.
भास्करस्येश्वरं विद्याद् उमां च शशिनस्तथा स्कन्दमङ्गारकस्यापि बुधस्य च तथा हरिम्
One should know Śiva as the lord of the Sun, Umā as that of the Moon, Skanda for Mars, and Hari for Mercury.
ब्रह्माणं च गुरोर्विद्याच् छुक्रस्यापि शचीपतिम् शनैश्चरस्य तु यमं राहोः कालं तथैव च
Brahmā is to be known as the lord of Jupiter, Indra as that of Venus, Yama for Saturn, and Time for Rāhu.
केतोर्वै चित्रगुप्तं च सर्वेषामधिदेवताः अग्निरापः क्षितिर्विष्णुर् इन्द्र ऐन्द्री च देवताः
For Ketu, Citragupta is the presiding deity; for all, the overlord deities are Agni, Waters, Earth, Viṣṇu, Indra, and the goddess Aindrī.
प्रजापतिश्च सर्पाश्च ब्रह्मा प्रत्यधिदेवताः विनायकं तथा दुर्गां वायुराकाशमेव च आवाहयेद्व्याहृतिभिस् तथैवाश्विकुमारकौ
Prajāpati and the serpents, Brahmā as the secondary deities; also Vināyaka, Durgā, Vāyu, and Ākāśa are to be invoked with the vyāhṛtis, as well as the Aśvinī Kumāras.
संस्मरेद्रक्तमादित्यम् अङ्गारकसमन्वितम् सोमशुक्रौ तथा श्वेतो बुधजीवौ च पिङ्गलौ मन्दराहू तथा कृष्णौ धूम्रं केतुगणं विदुः
One should meditate on the red Sun along with Mars; the Moon and Venus as white; Mercury and Jupiter as tawny; Saturn and Rāhu as black; and Ketu and his group as smoky.
ग्रहवर्णानि देयानि वासांसि कुसुमानि च धूपामोदो ऽत्र सुरभिर् उपरिष्टाद् वितानिकम् शोभनं स्थापयेत्प्राज्ञः फलपुष्पसमन्वितम्
Offer colored powders, garments, and flowers; fragrant incense should be placed above, and the wise should set up a beautiful canopy adorned with fruits and flowers.
गुडौदनं रवेर्दद्यात् सोमाय घृतपायसम् अङ्गारकाय संयावं बुधाय क्षीरषष्टिके
One should give sweet rice to the Sun, clarified butter rice pudding to Soma, wheat cakes to Mars, and milk rice to Mercury.
दध्योदनं च जीवाय शक्राय च घृतौदनम् शनैश्चराय कृसराम् अजामांसं च राहवे चित्रौदनं च केतुभ्यः सर्वभक्ष्यैरथार्चयेत्
Curd rice should be offered to Jupiter, clarified butter rice to Indra, rice with pulses to Saturn, goat meat to Rahu, and colored rice to the comets; all should be worshipped with various foods.
प्रागुत्तरेण तस्माच्च दध्यक्षतविभूषितम् चूतपल्लवसंछन्नं फलवस्त्रयुगान्वितम्
To the northeast of that, adorned with curd and unbroken grains, covered with mango leaves, and accompanied by fruits and pairs of garments.
पञ्चरत्नसमायुक्तं पञ्चभङ्गसमन्वितम् स्थापयेदव्रणं कुम्भं वरुणं तत्र विन्यसेत्
A flawless pot, joined with five gems and five metals, should be placed, and Varuna installed therein.
गङ्गाद्याः सरितः सर्वाः समुद्रांश्च सरांसि च गजाश्वरथ्यावल्मीकसंगमाद्ध्रदगोकुलात्
All rivers beginning with the Ganges, the oceans, lakes, and the confluences of elephants, horses, roads, anthills, ponds, and cow pastures.
मृदमानीय विप्रेन्द्र सर्वौषधिजलान्विताम् स्नानार्थं विन्यसेत्तत्र यजमानस्य धर्मवित्
O best of Brahmins, bring earth mixed with all medicinal waters, and place it there for the ritual bath of the sacrificer, O knower of dharma.
सर्वे समुद्राः सरितः सरांसि च नदास्तथा आयान्तु यजमानस्य दुरितक्षयकारकाः
May all oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams come for the sacrificer, bringing the destruction of sin.
