एवं सम्पूज्य गोविन्दं फलमाल्यानुलेपनैः ततस्तु मण्डलं कृत्वा स्थण्डिलं कारयेन्मुदा
Having thus worshipped Govinda with fruits, garlands, and ointments, then, with joy, one should prepare a mandala and make a sthaṇḍila.
चतुरस्रं समन्ताच्च रत्निमात्रमुदक्प्लवम् श्लक्ष्णं हृद्यं च परितो वप्रत्रयसमावृतम्
It should be square on all sides, measuring one ratni, smooth and pleasing, surrounded on all sides by three embankments.
अङ्गुलेनोच्छ्रिता वप्रास् तद्विस्तारस्तु द्व्यङ्गुलः स्थण्डिलस्योपरिष्टाच्च भित्तिरष्टाङ्गुला भवेत्
The embankments should be raised to the height of a finger, and their width should be two fingers; above the sthaṇḍila, the wall should be eight fingers high.
नदीवालुकया शूर्पे लक्ष्म्याः प्रतिकृतिं न्यसेत् स्थण्डिले शूर्पमारोप्य लक्ष्मीमित्यर्चयेद्बुधः
With river sand, one should fashion an image of Lakshmi with a winnowing basket; placing the basket on the sthaṇḍila, the wise should worship Lakshmi.
नमो देव्यै नमः शान्त्यै नमो लक्ष्म्यै नमः श्रियै नमः पुष्ट्यै नमस्तुष्ट्यै वृष्ट्यै हृष्ट्यै नमो नमः
Obeisance to the goddess, to Peace, to Lakshmi, to Fortune, to Nourishment, to Satisfaction, to Rain, to Joy—repeated obeisance.
विशोका दुःखनाशाय विशोका वरदास्तु मे विशोका चास्तु सम्पत्त्यै विशोका सर्वसिद्धये
O Viśokā, for the removal of sorrow, may you grant boons to me; may Viśokā be for prosperity, may Viśokā be for all attainments.
ततः शुक्लाम्बरैः शूर्पं वेष्ट्य सम्पूजयेत्फलैः वस्त्रैर्नानाविधैस्तद्वत् सुवर्णकमलेन च
Then, wrapping the basket in white cloths, one should worship it with fruits and various kinds of garments, as well as with a golden lotus.
रजनीषु च सर्वासु पिबेद्दर्भोदकं बुधः ततस्तु गीतनृत्यादि कारयेत्सकलां निशाम्
During all the nights, the wise should drink water with darbha grass; then, throughout the night, arrange for singing, dancing, and the like.
यामत्रये व्यतीते तु सुप्त्वाप्युत्थाय मानवः अभिगम्य च विप्राणां मिथुनानि तदार्चयेत्
When three watches of the night have passed, after sleeping and rising, a person should approach and worship the couples of Brahmins.
शक्तितस् त्रीणि चैकं वा वस्त्रमाल्यानुलेपनैः शयनस्थानि पूज्यानि नमो ऽस्तु जलशायिने
According to ability, three or one, with garments, garlands, and ointments, those lying on beds should be worshipped—obeisance to the one who lies on the waters.
ततस्तु गीतवाद्येन रात्रौ जागरणे कृते प्रभाते च ततः स्नानं कृत्वा दाम्पत्यमर्चयेत्
Then, with singing and instrumental music, keeping vigil at night, and at dawn, after bathing, one should worship the married couple.
भोजनं च यथाशक्त्या वित्तशाठ्यविवर्जितः भुक्त्वा श्रुत्वा पुराणानि तद्दिनं चातिवाहयेत्
One should eat according to one's means, free from miserliness; having eaten, having listened to the Puranas, one should pass that day.
अनेन विधिना सर्वं मासि मासि समाचरेत् व्रतान्ते शयनं दद्याद् गुडधेनुसमन्वितम् सोपधानकविश्रामं सास्तरावरणं शुभम्
In this manner, everything should be performed each month; at the end of the vow, one should give a bed, accompanied by jaggery and a cow, with bedding, a pillow, and a beautiful covering.
यथा न लक्ष्मीर्देवेश त्वां परित्यज्य गच्छति तथा सुरूपतारोग्यम् अशोकश्चास्तु मे सदा
O Lord of the gods, may Lakshmi never leave you; may I always have beauty, health, and freedom from sorrow.
यथा देवेन रहिता न लक्ष्मीर्जायते क्वचित् तथा विशोकता मे ऽस्तु भक्तिरग्र्या च केशवे
Just as fortune never arises anywhere without the presence of the divine, so may my devotion to Keśava be supreme and free from sorrow.
मन्त्रेणानेन शयनं गुडधेनुसमन्वितम् शूर्पं च लक्ष्म्या सहितं दातव्यं भूतिमिच्छता
With this mantra, one desiring prosperity should give a bed accompanied by a sweet cow and a winnowing basket together with Lakṣmī.
उत्पलं करवीरं च बाणमम्लानकुङ्कुमम् केतकी सिन्दुवारं च मल्लिका गन्धपाटला कदम्बं कुब्जकं जातिः शस्तान्येतानि सर्वदा
Lotus, oleander, arrow, unfaded saffron, ketakī, sinduvāra, jasmine, fragrant pāṭalā, kadamba, kubjaka, and jāti—these are always considered auspicious.
गुडधेनुविधानं मे समाचक्ष्व जगत्पते किंरूपं केन मन्त्रेण दातव्यं तदिहोच्यताम्
O Lord of the world, explain to me the procedure for the sweet cow: in what form, with which mantra should it be given? Let that be stated here.
गुडधेनुविधानस्य यद्रूपमिह यत्फलम् तदिदानीं प्रवक्ष्यामि सर्वपापविनाशनम्
Now I will declare the form and the result of the sweet cow procedure here, which destroys all sins.
कृष्णाजिनं चतुर्हस्तं प्राग्ग्रीवं विन्यसेद्भुवि गोमयेनानुलिप्तायां दर्भानास्तीर्य सर्वतः
One should place a four-handed black antelope skin facing east on the ground, after smearing it with cow dung and spreading darbha grass all around.
लघ्वेणकाजिनं तद्वद् वत्सं च परिकल्पयेत् प्राङ्मुखीं कल्पयेद्धेनुम् उदक्पादां सवत्सकाम्
Similarly, prepare a small antelope skin for the calf; arrange the cow facing east with water at her feet, along with her calf.
उत्तमा गुडधेनुः स्यात् सदा भारचतुष्टयम् वत्सं भारेण कुर्वीत द्वाभ्यां वै मध्यमा स्मृता
The best sweet cow should always have four units of weight; for the calf, use one unit. With two units, it is considered medium.
अर्धभारेण वत्सः स्यात् कनिष्ठा भारकेण तु चतुर्थांशेन वत्सः स्याद् गृहवित्तानुसारतः
The calf should be half a unit in weight; the lowest is with a quarter unit. The calf's portion should be according to the household's wealth.
धेनुवत्सौ घृतास्यौ च सितसूक्ष्माम्बरावृतौ शुक्तिकर्णाविक्षुपादौ शुचिमुक्ताफलेक्षणौ
The cow and calf should have mouths of clarified butter, be clothed in fine white garments, have shells for ears and sugarcane for feet, and their eyes should be pure pearls.
सितसूत्रशिरालौ तौ सितकम्बलकम्बलौ ताम्रगण्डकपृष्ठौ तौ सितचामररोमकौ
Both should have white thread for hair, white blankets for covering, copper cheeks and backs, and white yak-tail hair.
विद्रुमभ्रूयुगोपेतौ नवनीतस्तनावुभौ क्षौमपुच्छौ कांस्यदोहाव् इन्द्रनीलकतारकौ
Both should have coral eyebrows, butter for udders, linen for tails, bronze for milking vessels, and sapphire for pupils.
सुवर्णशृङ्गाभरणौ राजतैः खुरसंयुतौ नानाफलसमायुक्तौ घ्राणगन्धकरण्डकौ इत्येवं रचयित्वा तौ धूपदीपैरथार्चयेत्
Both should have golden horn ornaments, silver hooves, be adorned with various fruits, and have fragrant containers for noses; after arranging them thus, worship with incense and lamps.
या लक्ष्मीः सर्वभूतानां या च देवेष्ववस्थिता धेनुरूपेण सा देवी मम शान्तिं प्रयच्छतु
May the goddess who is Lakṣmī among all beings and who resides among the gods, in the form of a cow, grant me peace.
देहस्था या च रुद्राणी शंकरस्य सदा प्रिया धेनुरूपेण सा देवी मम पापं व्यपोहतु
May the goddess who is Rudrāṇī, always beloved of Śaṃkara and residing in the body, in the form of a cow, remove my sin.
विष्णोर्वक्षसि या लक्ष्मीः स्वाहा या च विभावसोः चन्द्रार्कशक्रशक्तिर्या धेनुरूपास्तु सा श्रिये
May the Lakṣmī on Viṣṇu's chest, the Svāhā of the fire, the power of moon, sun, and Indra, in the form of a cow, bring me prosperity.
