अनेन विधिना सर्वं मासि मासि समाचरेत् संवत्सरान्ते शयनं शर्कराकलशान्वितम्
In this manner, one should perform the entire rite every month; at the end of the year, one should offer a bed with a sugar pot.
सर्वोपस्करसंयुक्तं तथैकां गां पयस्विनीम् गृहं च शक्तिमान्दद्यात् समस्तोपस्करान्वितम्
Together with all necessary items, and also a single milking cow, one who is able should give a house furnished with all equipment.
सहस्रेणाथ निष्काणां कृत्वा दद्याच्छतेन वा दशभिर्वाथ निष्केण तदर्धेनापि शक्तितः
One should give, according to ability, a thousand gold coins, or a hundred, or ten, or even one, or half of one.
सुवर्णाश्वः प्रदातव्यः पूर्ववन्मन्त्रवादनम् न वित्तशाठ्यं कुर्वीत कुर्वन्दोषं समश्नुते
A horse of gold should be given, as before, with recitation of mantras; one should not act with deceit regarding wealth, for acting thus brings fault.
अमृतं पिबतो वक्त्रात् सूर्यस्यामृतबिन्दवः निपेतुर्ये धरण्यां तु शालिमुद्गेक्षवः स्मृताः
From the mouth of the one drinking nectar, drops of the sun's nectar fell upon the earth; these are remembered as rice and barley.
शर्करा तु परा तस्माद् इक्षुसारो ऽमृतात्मवान् इष्टा रवेरतः पुण्या शर्करा हव्यकव्ययोः
Sugar is supreme; therefore, the essence of sugarcane possesses the nature of nectar. Sugar, coming from the sun, is auspicious and fit for offerings to ancestors and gods.
शर्करासप्तमी चेयं वाजिमेधफलप्रदा सर्वदुष्टप्रशमनी पुत्रपौत्रप्रवर्धिनी
This is the Sugar Seventh, which grants the fruit of the horse sacrifice, dispels all evils, and increases sons and grandsons.
यः कुर्यात्परया भक्त्या स वै सद्गतिमाप्नुयात् कल्पमेकं वसेत्स्वर्गे ततो याति परं पदम्
Whoever performs it with supreme devotion attains a good destiny, dwells in heaven for an age, and then reaches the highest state.
इदमनघं शृणोति यः स्मरेद्वा परिपठतीह दिवाकरस्य लोके मतिमपि च ददाति सो ऽपि देवैर् अमरवधूजनमालयाभिपूज्यः
Whoever hears, remembers, or recites this faultless account here, receives wisdom in the realm of the sun, and is honored by the gods and celestial maidens.
अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि तद्वत्कमलसप्तमीम् यस्याः संकीर्तनादेव तुष्यतीह दिवाकरः
Next, I will explain the Lotus Seventh, by whose mere mention the sun is pleased here.
वसन्तामलसप्तम्यां स्नातः सन्गौरसर्षपैः तिलपात्रे च सौवर्णे विधाय कमलं शुभम्
On the pure Seventh of Spring, having bathed, with white mustard seeds and sesame, one should prepare a beautiful lotus in a golden vessel.
वस्त्रयुग्मावृतं कृत्वा गन्धपुष्पैः समर्चयेत् नमः कमलहस्ताय नमस्ते विश्वधारिणे
Covering it with a pair of cloths, one should worship it with fragrance and flowers, saying: 'Salutations to the lotus-handed, salutations to the sustainer of the universe.'
दिवाकर नमस्तुभ्यं प्रभाकर नमो ऽस्तु ते ततो द्विकालवेलायाम् उदकुम्भसमन्विताम्
O Sun, salutations to you; O radiant one, salutations to you. Then, at both times of day, offer it together with a water-pot.
विप्राय दद्यात्सम्पूज्य वस्त्रमाल्यविभूषणैः शक्त्या च कपिलां दद्याद् अलंकृत्य विधानतः
After honoring a Brahmin with cloth, garlands, and ornaments, one should give, according to ability, a decorated brown cow as prescribed.
अहोरात्रे गते पश्चाद् अष्टम्यां भोजयेद्द्विजान् यथाशक्त्यथ भुञ्जीत मांसतैलविवर्जितम्
After the day and night have passed, on the Eighth, one should feed Brahmins, and then eat oneself, avoiding meat and oil.
अनेन विधिना शुक्लसप्तम्यां मासि मासि च सर्वं समाचरेद्भक्त्या वित्तशाठ्यविवर्जितः
In this manner, one should perform the ritual of the bright Seventh every month, with devotion and free from deceit regarding wealth.
व्रतान्ते शयनं दद्यात् सुवर्णकमलान्वितम् गां च दद्यात्स्वशक्त्या तु सुवर्णाढ्यां पयस्विनीम्
At the end of the vow, one should give a bed adorned with a golden lotus, and, according to ability, a cow rich in gold and yielding milk.
भाजनासनदीपादीन् दद्याद् इष्टानुपस्करान् अनेन विधिना यस्तु कुर्यात्कमलसप्तमीम् लक्ष्मीमनन्तामभ्येति सूर्यलोके महीयते
One should give desired utensils such as vessels, seats, lamps, and other implements. Whoever performs the Lotus Seventh in this way attains endless prosperity and is honored in the realm of the sun.
कल्पे कल्पे ततो लोकान् सप्तगत्वा पृथक्पृथक् अप्सरोभिः परिवृतस् ततो याति परां गतिम्
In every cycle, after passing through seven worlds separately, surrounded by apsaras, one then attains the highest state.
यः पश्यतीदं शृणुयाच्च मर्त्यः पठेच्च भक्त्याथ मतिं ददाति सो ऽप्यत्र लक्ष्मीमचलामवाप्य गन्धर्वविद्याधरलोकभाक्स्यात्
Whoever sees, hears, or recites this with devotion, and gives attention, attains unwavering prosperity here, and enjoys the realms of Gandharvas and Vidyadharas.
अथातः सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि सर्वपापप्रणाशिनीम् सर्वकामप्रदां रम्यां नाम्ना मन्दारसप्तमीम्
Now, therefore, I shall explain the Mandāra Saptamī, which destroys all sins, grants all desires, and is delightful.
माघस्यामलपक्षे तु पञ्चम्यां लघुभुङ्नरः दन्तकाष्ठं ततः कृत्वा षष्ठीमुपवसेद्बुधः
On the fifth day of the bright half of Māgha, a man should eat lightly, then prepare a tooth-stick, and the wise should fast on the sixth day.
विप्रान् सम्पूजयित्वा तु मन्दारं प्राशयेन्निशि ततः प्रभात उत्थाय कृत्वा स्नानं पुनर्द्विजान्
After duly honoring the Brāhmaṇas, one should partake of mandāra at night; then, rising at dawn and bathing, again honor the twice-born.
भोजयेच्छक्तितः कृत्वा मन्दारकुसुमाष्टकम् सौवर्णं पुरुषं तद्वत् पद्महस्तं सुशोभनम्
Having fed them to the best of one’s ability, one should make eight mandāra flowers and a golden figure, likewise, holding a lotus and beautiful.
पद्मं कृष्णतिलैः कृत्वा ताम्रपात्रे ऽष्टपत्त्रकम् हैममन्दारकुसुमैर् भास्करायेति पूर्वतः
Fashion a lotus with black sesame seeds in a copper vessel with eight petals, and with golden mandāra flowers, worship the Sun in the east.
नमस्कारेण तद्वच्च सूर्यायेत्यानले दले दक्षिणे तद्वदर्काय तथार्यम्णे च नैरृते
With reverence, likewise, worship Sūrya on the southern petal as 'to Sūrya,' on the southwestern as 'to Arka,' and on the western as 'to Aryaman.'
पश्चिमे वेदधाम्ने च वायव्ये चण्डभानवे पूष्णेत्युत्तरतः पूज्यम् आनन्दायेत्यतः परम्
On the western petal, worship Vedadhāmā; on the northwestern, Caṇḍabhānu; on the northern, Pūṣan; and next, Ānanda.
कर्णिकायां च पुरुषं सर्वात्मन इति न्यसेत् शुक्लवस्त्रैः समावेष्ट्य भक्ष्यैर्माल्यफलादिभिः
In the center, place the figure as the universal self, wrap it in white cloths, and adorn with offerings such as food, garlands, and fruits.
एवमभ्यर्च्य तत्सर्वं दद्याद्वेदविदे पुनः भुञ्जीतातैललवणं वाग्यतः प्राङ्मुखो गृही
Having thus worshipped all this, one should give it to a knower of the Veda, then, facing east and observing silence, the householder may eat food with oil and salt.
अनेन विधिना सर्वं सप्तम्यां मासि मासि च कुर्यात्संवत्सरं यावद् वित्तशाठ्यविवर्जितः
In this manner, one should perform the rite on every Saptamī each month for a year, free from miserliness regarding wealth.
