प्रीयतामत्र भगवान् परमात्मा दिवाकरः अनेन विधिना सर्वं मासि मासि व्रतं चरेत्
May the blessed Lord, the Supreme Self, the Sun, be pleased here; by this procedure, one should observe the vow every month.
ततस्त्रयोदशे मासि गा वै दद्यात्त्रयोदश वस्त्रालंकारसंयुक्ताः सुवर्णास्याः पयस्विनीः
Then, in the thirteenth month, one should give cows—thirteen in number—adorned with garments and ornaments, with golden faces and yielding milk.
एकामपि प्रदद्याद्वा वित्तहीनो विमत्सरः न वित्तशाठ्यं कुर्वीत यतो मोहात्पतत्यधः
Or, if lacking wealth but free from envy, one may give even a single cow; one should not act deceitfully with wealth, for delusion leads to downfall.
अनेन विधिना यस्तु कुर्यात्कल्याणसप्तमीम् सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः सूर्यलोके महीयते आयुरारोग्यमैश्वर्यम् अनन्तमिह जायते
Whoever performs the Kalyāṇa Saptamī with this procedure becomes free from all sins, is honored in the world of the Sun, and attains endless life, health, and prosperity here.
सर्वपापहरा नित्यं सर्वदैवतपूजिता सर्वदुष्टोपशमनी सदा कल्याणसप्तमी
The Kalyāṇa Saptamī always removes all sins, is ever worshipped by all deities, dispels all evils, and is ever auspicious.
इमामनन्तफलदां यस्तु कल्याणसप्तमीम् शृणोति पठते चेह सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते
Whoever hears or recites this Kalyāṇa Saptamī, which bestows endless rewards, is freed from all sins.
विशोकसप्तमीं तद्वद् वक्ष्यामि मुनिपुंगव यामुपोष्य नरः शोकं न कदाचिदिहाश्नुते
O foremost of sages, I shall now describe the Viśoka Saptamī, by observing which a man never experiences sorrow in this world.
माघे कृष्णतिलैः स्नात्वा षष्ठ्यां वै शुक्लपक्षतः कृताहारः कृसरया दन्तधावनपूर्वकम् उपवासव्रतं कृत्वा ब्रह्मचारी भवेन्निशि
In the month of Māgha, on the sixth day of the bright fortnight, after bathing with black sesame seeds, having fasted, having brushed the teeth, and having eaten rice with pulses, one should undertake the vow of fasting and remain celibate at night.
ततः प्रभात उत्थाय कृतस्नानजपः शुचिः कृत्वा तु काञ्चनं पद्मम् अर्कायेति च पूजयेत् करवीरेण रक्तेन रक्तवस्त्रयुगेन च
Then, rising at dawn, having bathed and recited prayers, purified, one should worship the Sun with a golden lotus, with red oleander flowers, and with a pair of red garments, saying, 'To the Sun!'
यथा विशोकं भुवनं त्वयैवादित्य सर्वदा तथा विशोकता मे ऽस्तु त्वद्भक्तिः प्रतिजन्म च
Just as, O Sun, you always render the world free from sorrow, so may I too be free from sorrow; may I have devotion to you in every birth.
एवं सम्पूज्य षष्ठ्यां तु भक्त्या सम्पूजयेद्द्विजान् सुप्त्वा संप्राश्य गोमूत्रम् उत्थाय कृतनैत्यकः
Thus, having worshipped with devotion on the sixth day, one should also honor the twice-born; after sleeping, sipping cow's urine, and rising, one should perform the daily rites.
सम्पूज्य विप्रानन्नेन गुडपात्रसमन्वितम् तद्वस्त्रयुग्मं पद्मं च ब्राह्मणाय निवेदयेत्
Having honored the Brahmins with food accompanied by a vessel of jaggery, one should offer them a pair of garments and the lotus.
अतैललवणं भुक्त्वा सप्तम्यां मौनसंयुतः ततः पुराणश्रवणं कर्तव्यं भूतिमिच्छता
On the seventh day, eating food without oil and salt, observing silence, one who desires prosperity should then listen to the Purāṇas.
अनेन विधिना सर्वम् उभयोरपि पक्षयोः कृत्वा यावत्पुनर्माघशुक्लपक्षस्य सप्तमी
By performing all this procedure in both fortnights, until the seventh day of the bright fortnight of Māgha returns again,
व्रतान्ते कलशं दद्यात् सुवर्णकमलान्वितम् शय्यां सोपस्करां दद्यात् कपिलां च पयस्विनीम्
At the conclusion of the vow, one should give a pot adorned with a golden lotus, a bed with its furnishings, and a tawny, milk-giving cow.
अनेन विधिना यस्तु वित्तशाठ्यविवर्जितः विशोकसप्तमीं कुर्यात् स याति परमां गतिम्
Whoever observes the Viśoka Saptamī in this manner, free from miserliness regarding wealth, attains the highest state.
यावज्जन्मसहस्राणां साग्रं कोटिशतं भवेत् तावन्न शोकमभ्येति रोगदौर्गत्यवर्जितः
For as many as a hundred million and one thousand births, he does not encounter sorrow, remaining free from disease and misfortune.
यं यं प्रार्थयते कामं तं तमाप्नोति पुष्कलम् निष्कामः कुरुते यस्तु स परं ब्रह्म गच्छति
Whatever desire one prays for, that he obtains in abundance; but he who performs it without desire attains the Supreme Brahman.
यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि विशोकाख्यां च सप्तमीम् सो ऽपीन्द्रलोकमाप्नोति न दुःखी जायते क्वचित्
Whoever recites or hears about this Saptamī called Viśoka also attains the world of Indra and is never born into suffering.
अन्यामपि प्रवक्ष्यामि नाम्ना तु फलसप्तमीम् यामुपोष्य नरः पापाद् विमुक्तः स्वर्गभाग्भवेत्
I shall now describe another, called the Phala Saptamī; by observing it, a man becomes free from sin and attains heaven.
मार्गशीर्षे शुभे मासि सप्तम्यां नियतव्रतः तामुपोष्याथ कमलं कारयित्वा तु काञ्चनम्
In the auspicious month of Mārgaśīrṣa, on the seventh day, with a regulated vow, after fasting, one should have a golden lotus made.
शर्करासंयुतं दद्याद् ब्राह्मणाय कुटुम्बिने रविं काञ्चनकं कृत्वा पलस्यैकस्य धर्मवित् दद्याद्द्विकालवेलायां भानुर्मे प्रीयतामिति
One should give to a householder Brahmin a golden image of the Sun, together with sugar, weighing one pala, at both the morning and evening times, saying, 'May the Sun be pleased with me.'
भक्त्या तु विप्रान्सम्पूज्य चाष्टम्यां क्षीरभोजनम् दत्त्वा कुर्यात्फलयुतं यावत्स्यात्कृष्णेसप्तमी
Having worshipped the Brahmins with devotion, and on the eighth day giving them a meal with milk, one should continue the vow with fruit until the Kṛṣṇa Saptamī.
तामप्युपोष्य विधिवद् अनेनैव क्रमेण तु तद्वद्धैमफलं दत्त्वा सुवर्णकमलान्वितम्
Observing that as well, in the proper manner and order, one should give a golden fruit adorned with a golden lotus, just as before.
शर्करापात्रसंयुक्तं वस्त्रमाल्यसमन्वितम् संवत्सरं च तेनैव विधिनोभयसप्तमीम्
With a vessel of sugar, together with cloth and garlands, and for a year, in this very manner, one should observe both the seventh days.
उपोष्य दत्त्वा क्रमशः सूर्यमन्त्रमुदीरयेत् भानुरर्को रविर्ब्रह्मा सूर्यः शक्रो हरिः शिवः श्रीमान्विभावसुस्त्वष्टा वरुणः प्रीयतामिति
Having fasted, and having given in order, one should recite the Sun-mantra: 'Bhānu, Arka, Ravi, Brahmā, Sūrya, Śakra, Hari, Śiva, Śrīmān, Vibhāvasu, Tvaṣṭṛ, Varuṇa—may they be pleased.'
प्रतिमासं च सप्तम्याम् एकैकं नाम कीर्तयेत् प्रतिपक्षं फलत्यागम् एतत्कुर्वन्समाचरेत्
On each seventh day of the month, one should recite each name; on each fortnight, one should perform the offering of fruit, doing this regularly.
व्रतान्ते विप्रमिथुनं पूजयेद्वस्त्रभूषणैः शर्कराकलशं दद्याद् धेमपद्मदलान्वितम्
At the end of the vow, one should honor a pair of Brāhmaṇas with cloth and ornaments, and give a sugar pot adorned with golden lotus petals.
यथा न विफलाः कामास् त्वद्भक्तानां सदा रवे तथानन्तफलावाप्तिर् अस्तु मे सप्तजन्मसु
O Sun, just as the desires of your devotees are never fruitless, so may I obtain endless rewards for seven births.
इमामनन्तफलदां यः कुर्यात्फलसप्तमीम् सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा सूर्यलोके महीयते
Whoever performs this sevenfold vow, which grants endless rewards, becomes purified from all sins and is honored in the world of the Sun.
