नूनम् एतत् परिणतम् अधुना कृष्णपूजनात् वज्रेणापि हताः सन्तो न विनाशम् अवाप्नुयुः
'Surely this has now come to pass because of the worship of Kṛṣṇa; though struck even by the thunderbolt, they do not meet destruction.'
एको ऽप्यनेकतामाप यस्मादुदरगो ऽप्यलम् अवध्या नूनमेते वै तस्माद्देवा भवन्त्विति
'Since even one, though in the womb, has become many, these are surely invulnerable; therefore, let them become gods.'
यस्मान्मा रुदतेत्युक्ता रुदन्तो गर्भसंस्थिताः मरुतो नाम ते नाम्ना भवन्तु मखभागिनः
'Since, when told "Do not cry," they wept while still in the womb, let them be called Maruts by name, and be entitled to a share of the sacrifice.'
ततः प्रसाद्य देवेशः क्षमस्वेति दितिं पुनः अर्थशास्त्रं समास्थाय मयैतद् दुष्कृतं कृतम्
Then, having propitiated the lord of the gods, Diti again said, 'Forgive me; by following the science of polity, I have done this wrong.'
कृत्वा मरुद्गणं देवैः समानममराधिपः दितिं विमानमारोप्य ससुतामनयद्दिवम्
Having made the host of Maruts equal to the gods, the lord of immortals placed Diti, together with her sons, in a celestial chariot and led her to heaven.
यज्ञभागभुजो जाता मरुतस्ते ततो द्विजाः न जग्मुरैक्यमसुरैर् अतस्ते सुरवल्लभाः
Then, O twice-born, the Maruts became entitled to a share of the sacrifice; they did not join with the Asuras, and thus became dear to the gods.
आदिसर्गश्च यः सूत कथितो विस्तरेण तु प्रतिसर्गश्च ये येषाम् अधिपास् तान्वदस्व नः
O Sūta, you have described the original creation in detail; now tell us about the secondary creation and the rulers of each.
यदाभिषिक्तः सकलाधिराज्ये पृथुर्धरित्र्यामधिपो बभूव तदौषधीनामधिपं चकार यज्ञव्रतानां तपसां च चन्द्रम्
When Pṛthu was anointed as sovereign over all, he became lord of the earth; then he appointed the moon as lord of plants, of sacrifices, and of austerities.
नक्षत्रताराद्विजवृक्षगुल्मलतावितानस्य च रुक्मगर्भः अपामधीशं वरुणं धनानां राज्ञां प्रभुं वैश्रवणं च तद्वत्
He made the golden-wombed sun lord of stars, planets, twice-born sages, trees, shrubs, and creepers; Varuṇa as lord of waters; Vaiśravaṇa as lord of wealth and kings.
विष्णुं रवीणामधिपं वसूनाम् अग्निं च लोकाधिपतिश्चकार प्रजापतीनामधिपं च दक्षं चकार शक्रं मरुतामधीशम्
He made Viṣṇu lord of the suns, Agni of the Vasus, Dakṣa lord of the progenitors, and Śakra lord of the Maruts.
दैत्याधिपानामथ दानवानां प्रह्लादमीशं च यमं पितॄणाम् पिशाचरक्षःपशुभूतयक्षवेतालराजं त्व् अथ शूलपाणिम्
Then, among the Daityas and Dānavas, he made Prahlāda their lord; Yama lord of the ancestors; and the trident-bearer lord of Piśācas, Rākṣasas, animals, spirits, and Vetālas.
प्रालेयशैलं च पतिं गिरीणाम् ईशं समुद्रं ससरिन्नदानाम् गन्धर्वविद्याधरकिंनराणाम् ईशं पुनश्चित्ररथं चकार
He made the snowy mountain lord of the mountains, the ocean lord of rivers, Gandharvas, Vidyādharas, and Kinnaras, and again Citraratha as their lord.
नागाधिपं वासुकिमुग्रवीर्यं सर्पाधिपं तक्षकमादिदेश दिशां गजानामधिपं चकार गजेन्द्रमैरावतनामधेयम्
He appointed Vāsuki, of fierce strength, as lord of the Nāgas, Takṣaka as lord of the serpents, and Airāvata, named Gajendra, as lord of the elephants of the quarters.
सुपर्णमीशं पततामथाश्वराजानमुच्चैःश्रवसं चकार सिंहं मृगाणां वृषभं गवां च प्लक्षं पुनः सर्ववनस्पतीनाम्
He made Suparṇa lord of the birds, Uccaiḥśravas king of horses, the lion of beasts, the bull of cattle, and again Plakṣa lord of all trees.
पितामहः पूर्वमथाभ्यषिञ्चच् चैतान्पुनः सर्वदिशाधिनाथान् पूर्वेण दिक्पालम् अथाभ्यषिञ्चन् नाम्ना सुधर्माणम् अरातिकेतुम्
First, the Grandfather anointed these as lords of all directions, and again anointed Sudharmā, called Arātiketu, as the guardian of the east.
ततो ऽधिपं दक्षिणतश्चकार सर्वेश्वरं शङ्खपदाभिधानम् स केतुमन्तं च दिगीशमीशश् चकार पश्चाद् भुवनाण्डगर्भः
Then he appointed Śaṅkhapada, the lord of all, as ruler of the south, and Ketumant as the guardian of the west, he who is the womb of the cosmic egg.
हिरण्यरोमाणम् उदग्दिगीशं प्रजापतिर् देवसुतं चकार अद्यापि कुर्वन्ति दिशाम् अधीशाः शत्रून् दहन्तस्तु भुवो ऽभिरक्षाम्
The Lord of Creatures made Hiraṇyaroman, son of the gods, the guardian of the north; even today, the lords of the directions destroy enemies and protect the earth.
चतुर्भिर् एभिः पृथुनामधेयो नृपो ऽभिषिक्तः प्रथमं पृथिव्याम् गते ऽन्तरे चाक्षुषनामधेये वैवस्वताख्ये च पुनः प्रवृत्ते प्रजापतिः सो ऽस्य चराचरस्य बभूव सूर्यान्वयवंशचिह्नः
With these four, the king named Pṛthu was first consecrated on earth; when the Cākṣuṣa era ended and the Vaivasvata era began, the Lord of Creatures, marked by the lineage of the Sun, became lord of all that moves and does not move.
एवं श्रुत्वा मनुः प्राह पुनरेव जनार्दनम् पूर्वेषां चरितं ब्रूहि मनूनां मधुसूदन
Having heard thus, Manu again spoke to Janārdana: 'Tell me the deeds of the former Manus, O Madhusūdana.'
मन्वन्तराणि राजेन्द्र मनूनां चरितं च यत् प्रमाणं चैव कालस्य तां सृष्टिं च समासतः
O king, the periods of the Manus, the deeds of the Manus, the measure of time, and that creation—tell me all this in summary.
एकचित्तः प्रशान्तात्मा शृणु मार्तण्डनन्दन यामा नाम पुरा देवा आसन् स्वायम्भुवान्तरे
With a single mind and a tranquil heart, listen, O son of the Sun, to the gods called Yāmās who existed in the era of Svāyambhuva.
सप्तैव ऋषयः पूर्वे ये मरीच्यादयः स्मृताः आग्नीध्रश्चाग्निबाहुश्च सहः सवन एव च
The seven ancient seers, remembered as Marīci and the rest, and Āgnīdhra, Āgnibāhu, Saha, and Savana as well.
ज्योतिष्मान् द्युतिमान् हव्यो मेधा मेधातिथिर् वसुः स्वायम्भुवस्यास्य मनोर् दशैते वंशवर्धनाः
Jyotiṣmān, Dyutimān, Havya, Medhā, Medhātithi, Vasu—these ten, the enhancers of the lineage, were sons of this Svāyambhuva Manu.
प्रतिसर्गमिमे कृत्वा जग्मुर्यत्परमंपदम् एतत् स्वायम्भुवं प्रोक्तं स्वारोचिषमतः परम्
Having completed these cycles of creation, they attained the supreme state; this is called the Svāyambhuva era, next comes the Svārociṣa.
स्वारोचिषस्य तनयाश् चत्वारो देववर्चसः नभोनभस्यप्रसृतिभानवः कीर्तिवर्धनाः
Svārociṣa had four sons, radiant as gods: Nabha, Nabhasya, Prasṛti, and Bhānava, all increasers of fame.
दत्तो निश्च्यवनस्तम्बः प्राणः कश्यप एव च और्वो बृहस्पतिश्चैव सप्तैते ऋषयः स्मृताः
Datta, Niścyavana, Stamba, Prāṇa, Kaśyapa, Aurva, and Bṛhaspati—these seven are remembered as the seers.
देवाश्च तुषिता नाम स्मृताः स्वारोचिषे ऽन्तरे हस्तीन्द्रः सुकृतो मूर्तिर् आपो ज्योतिरयः स्मयः
The gods called Tuṣitas are remembered in the Svārociṣa era; Hastīndra, Sukṛta, Mūrti, Āpa, Jyotiraya, and Smaya.
वसिष्ठस्य सुताः सप्त ये प्रजापतयः स्मृताः द्वितीयमेतत्कथितं मन्वन्तरमतः परम्
The seven sons of Vasiṣṭha, remembered as progenitors, were present; this is the second Manvantara, next comes the following.
औत्तमीयं प्रवक्ष्यामि तथा मन्वन्तरं शुभम् मनुर्नामौत्तमिर्यत्र दश पुत्रानजीजनत्
I will now describe the auspicious Manvantara of Uttama; there, Manu named Uttama begot ten sons.
ईष ऊर्जश्च तर्जश् च शुचिः शुक्रस्तथैव च मधुश् च माधवश्चैव नभस्यो ऽथ नभास्तथा
Īṣa, Ūrja, Tarja, Śuci, Śukra, Madhu, Mādhava, Nabhasya, and Nabha as well.
