कृत्वा वै ब्राह्मणान् सर्वान् अन्नैर्नानाविधैस्तथा भुक्त्वा चाक्षारलवणम् आत्मना च विसर्जयेत्
Having thus satisfied all the Brahmins with various kinds of food, and having eaten unsalted and unspiced food oneself, one should take leave.
अनुगम्य पदान्यष्टौ पुत्रभार्यासमन्वितः प्रीयतामत्र देवेशः केशवः क्लेशनाशनः
Accompanied by his sons and wives, he should follow them for eight steps on foot; may Keshava, the Lord of the gods, destroyer of suffering, be pleased by this.
शिवस्य हृदये विष्णुर् विष्णोश्च हृदये शिवः यथान्तरं न पश्यामि तथा मे स्वस्ति चायुषः
Vishnu is in the heart of Shiva, and Shiva is in the heart of Vishnu; I do not see any difference between them—may this bring me well-being and long life.
एवमुच्चार्य तान्कुम्भान् गाश्चैव शयनानि च वासांसि चैव सर्वेषां गृहाणि प्रापयेद्बुधः
Having spoken thus, the wise one should deliver the pots, cows, bedding, and garments to all of them.
अभावे बहुशय्यानाम् एकामपि सुसंस्कृताम् शय्यां दद्याद्द्विजातेश्च सर्वोपस्करसंयुताम्
If there is a lack of many beds, one should give at least one well-prepared bed to the twice-born, complete with all its furnishings.
इतिहासपुराणानि वाचयित्वातिवाहयेत् तद्दिनं नरशार्दूल य इच्छेद्विपुलां श्रियम्
Having recited histories and ancient tales, one should pass that day, O tiger among men, whoever desires abundant prosperity.
तस्मात्त्वं सत्त्वमालम्ब्य भीमसेन विमत्सरः कुरु व्रतमिदं सम्यक् स्नेहात्तव मयेरितम्
Therefore, O Bhimasena, relying on virtue and free from envy, perform this vow properly, as I have declared to you out of affection.
त्वया कृतमिदं वीर त्वन्नामाख्यं भविष्यति सा भीमद्वादशी ह्येषा सर्वपापहरा शुभा या तु कल्याणिनी नाम पुरा कल्पेषु पठ्यते
O hero, this which you have performed will bear your name; this is the Bhima Dvadashi, auspicious and remover of all sins, which was formerly known as Kalyanini in the ages.
त्वमादिकर्ता भव सौकरे ऽस्मिन् कल्पे महावीरवरप्रधान यस्याः स्मरन्कीर्तनमप्यशेषं विनष्टपापस्त्रिदशाधिपः स्यात्
You will be the originator of this in the present boar-manifestation age, O mighty one, chief among heroes; even remembering or praising it, the lord of the gods is freed from all sins.
कृत्वा च यामप्सरसाम् अधीशा वेश्या कृता ह्यन्यभवान्तरेषु आभीरकन्यातिकुतूहलेन सैवोर्वशी सम्प्रति नाकपृष्ठे
Having made the foremost of the Apsarasas, who were courtesans in other births, out of curiosity for the Abhira maidens, that same Urvashi now dwells in the highest heaven.
जाताथवा वैश्यकुलोद्भवापि पुलोमकन्या पुरुहूतपत्नी तत्रापि तस्याः परिचारिकेयं मम प्रिया सम्प्रति सत्यभामा
Or, being born in a merchant family, or as the daughter of Puloma, or as the wife of Puruhuta, even there she was her attendant; now, my beloved Satyabhama is she.
स्नातः पुरा मण्डलमेष तद्वत् तेजोमयं वेदशरीरमाप अस्यां च कल्याणतिथौ विवस्वान् सहस्रधारेण सहस्ररश्मिः
Having bathed, he once attained this radiant circle, the embodiment of the Vedas; and on this auspicious day, the sun, with a thousand rays, pours forth with a thousand streams.
इदमेव कृतं महेन्द्रमुख्यैर् वसुभिर्देवसुरारिभिस्तथा तु फलमस्य न शक्यते ऽभिवक्तुं यदि जिह्वायुतकोटयो मुखे स्युः
This very rite was performed by the Vasus, led by Mahendra, and by the enemies of the gods; yet its result cannot be fully described, even if there were millions of tongues in one’s mouth.
कलिकलुषविदारिणीमनन्ताम् इति कथयिष्यति यादवेन्द्रसूनुः अपि नरकगतान्पितॄन् अशेषान् अलमुद्धर्तुमिहैव यः करोति
The son of the lord of the Yadus will declare this as the destroyer of the impurity of the Kali age and as boundless; even those whose ancestors have gone to hell can be completely liberated here by performing it.
य इदमघविदारणं शृणोति भक्त्या परिपठतीह परोपकारहेतोः तिथिमिह सकलार्थभाङ्नरेन्द्रस् तव चतुरानन साम्यतामुपैति
Whoever hears or recites this destroyer of sin here, with devotion and for the sake of benefiting others, O King, attains, in this very life, all desired aims and the equality of the Four-Faced One.
कल्याणिनी नाम पुरा बभूव या द्वादशी माघदिनेषु पूज्या सा पाण्डुपुत्रेण कृता भविष्यत्य् अनन्तपुण्यानघ भीमपूर्वा
Once there was a sacred day called Kalyāṇinī, the twelfth lunar day in the month of Māgha, to be worshipped; it was observed by the son of Pāṇḍu and, O sinless one, will be performed in the future, beginning with Bhīma, yielding endless merit.
वर्णाश्रमाणां प्रभवः पुराणेषु मया श्रुतः सदाचारस्य भगवन् धर्मशास्त्रविनिश्चयः पण्यस्त्रीणां सदाचारं श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः
O Lord, I have heard in the Purāṇas about the origin of the social classes and stages of life, and the settled conclusions of the Dharmaśāstras regarding good conduct; I wish to hear, in truth, about the proper conduct of merchant women.
तस्मिन्नेव युगे ब्रह्मन् सहस्राणि तु षोडश वासुदेवस्य नारीणां भविष्यन्त्यम्बुजोद्भव
In that very age, O Brahman, there will be sixteen thousand wives of Vāsudeva, O Lotus-born one.
ताभिर्वसन्तसमये कोकिलालिकुलाकुले पुष्पिते पवनोत्फुल्लकह्लारसरसस्तटे
With them, in the season of spring, amidst the gatherings of cuckoos and bees, on the blossoming banks of lakes adorned with blooming lotuses stirred by the wind—
निर्भरापानगोष्ठीषु प्रसक्ताभिरलंकृतः कुरङ्गनयनः श्रीमान् मालतीकृतशेखरः
In gatherings filled with abundant drinking, adorned by those devoted women, the illustrious, deer-eyed one, with jasmine garlands in his hair, will delight.
गच्छन्समीपमार्गेण साम्बः परपुरंजयः साक्षात्कन्दर्पो रूपेण सर्वाभरणभूषितः
Sāmba, the conqueror of enemy cities, approaching by the path, will appear as Kāmadeva himself in form, adorned with all ornaments.
अनङ्गशरतप्ताभिः साभिलाषमवेक्षितः प्रवृद्धो मन्मथस्तासां भविष्यति यदात्मनि
Looked upon with longing by those women, scorched by the arrows of desire, the passion of love will grow strong in their hearts.
तदावेक्ष्य जगन्नाथः सर्वतो ज्ञानचक्षुषा शापं वक्ष्यति ताः सर्वा वो हरिष्यन्ति दस्यवः मत्परोक्षं यतः कामलौल्यादीदृग्विधं कृतम्
Then, seeing this, the Lord of the universe, with the eye of knowledge perceiving all, will pronounce a curse upon them: 'Thieves will carry you all away in my absence, because of this act born of greed and desire.'
ततः प्रसादितो देव इदं वक्ष्यति शार्ङ्गभृत् ताभिः शापाभितप्ताभिर् भगवान् भूतभावनः
Then, when the god bearing the Śārṅga bow is propitiated, the Lord, the source of beings, will speak this to those afflicted by the curse.
उत्तारभूतं दासत्वं समुद्राद्ब्राह्मणप्रियः उपदेक्ष्यत्यनन्तात्मा भाविकल्याणकारकम्
The infinite-souled one, dear to the Brāhmaṇas, will instruct those who have become slaves and have been rescued from the ocean, in a vow that brings future welfare.
भवतीनाम् ऋषिर्दाल्भ्यो यद्व्रतं कथयिष्यति तदैवोत्तारणायालं दासत्वे ऽपि भविष्यति इत्युक्त्वा ताः परिष्वज्य गतो द्वारवतीश्वरः
The sage Dālbhya will declare to you the vow; that alone will suffice for your deliverance, even in servitude. Having said this and embraced them, the Lord of Dvāravatī departed.
ततः कालेन महता भारावतरणे कृते निवृत्ते मौसले तद्वत् केशवे दिवमागते
Then, after a long time, when the burden of the earth had been removed, and the Mausala destruction had occurred, and Keśava had ascended to heaven—
शून्ये यदुकुले सर्वैश् चौरैरपि जिते ऽर्जुने हृतासु कृष्णपत्नीषु दासभोग्यासु चाम्बुधौ
When the Yadu clan was destroyed, all conquered by thieves, and Arjuna was deprived, the wives of Kṛṣṇa were carried off, made slaves, and taken to the ocean.
तिष्ठन्तीषु च दौर्गत्यसंतप्तासु चतुर्मुख आगमिष्यति योगात्मा दाल्भ्यो नाम महातपाः
While they remained, afflicted by misfortune, O Four-Faced One, the great ascetic named Dālbhya, possessed of yogic power, will come.
तास्तमर्घ्येण सम्पूज्य प्रणिपत्य पुनः पुनः लालप्यमाना बहुशो बाष्पपर्याकुलेक्षणाः
They will honor him with water for washing the feet, bowing again and again, lamenting repeatedly, their eyes filled with tears.
