Then, Indra, fearful, approached Diti's side, leaving the abode of the gods, and remained there, serving her.
Desiring to find a breach in Diti, the lord of the gods became humble, undistracted, and outwardly calm.
Unaware of his purpose, he acted virtuously; then, at the end of a hundred years, with three days remaining,
She considered herself accomplished, her mind joyful and amazed; without cleansing her feet, she slept with her hair unbound.
Overcome by sleep, she lay with her head to the south during the day; then, finding that opportunity, Shachi's husband entered.
With his thunderbolt, the lord of the gods divided that embryo into seven parts; then seven sons were born, radiant as the sun.
Those seven children, weeping, were forbidden by the mountain-dweller; yet as they continued to cry, Hari divided each one into seven.
Then the slayer of Vṛtra cut them again, while they were still in the womb; thus, becoming forty-nine, they wept intensely.
Indra tried to restrain them, saying, 'Do not cry again and again.' Then the slayer of Vṛtra wondered, 'What is this?'
He thought, 'By the greatness of what dharma have these been revived?' Realizing through meditation the fruit of the Madanadvādaśī vow—
'Surely this has now come to pass because of the worship of Kṛṣṇa; though struck even by the thunderbolt, they do not meet destruction.'
'Since even one, though in the womb, has become many, these are surely invulnerable; therefore, let them become gods.'
'Since, when told "Do not cry," they wept while still in the womb, let them be called Maruts by name, and be entitled to a share of the sacrifice.'
Then, having propitiated the lord of the gods, Diti again said, 'Forgive me; by following the science of polity, I have done this wrong.'
Having made the host of Maruts equal to the gods, the lord of immortals placed Diti, together with her sons, in a celestial chariot and led her to heaven.
Then, O twice-born, the Maruts became entitled to a share of the sacrifice; they did not join with the Asuras, and thus became dear to the gods.
O Sūta, you have described the original creation in detail; now tell us about the secondary creation and the rulers of each.

He made the golden-wombed sun lord of stars, planets, twice-born sages, trees, shrubs, and creepers; Varuṇa as lord of waters; Vaiśravaṇa as lord of wealth and kings.
He made Viṣṇu lord of the suns, Agni of the Vasus, Dakṣa lord of the progenitors, and Śakra lord of the Maruts.
Then, among the Daityas and Dānavas, he made Prahlāda their lord; Yama lord of the ancestors; and the trident-bearer lord of Piśācas, Rākṣasas, animals, spirits, and Vetālas.
He made the snowy mountain lord of the mountains, the ocean lord of rivers, Gandharvas, Vidyādharas, and Kinnaras, and again Citraratha as their lord.
He appointed Vāsuki, of fierce strength, as lord of the Nāgas, Takṣaka as lord of the serpents, and Airāvata, named Gajendra, as lord of the elephants of the quarters.
He made Suparṇa lord of the birds, Uccaiḥśravas king of horses, the lion of beasts, the bull of cattle, and again Plakṣa lord of all trees.
First, the Grandfather anointed these as lords of all directions, and again anointed Sudharmā, called Arātiketu, as the guardian of the east.
Then he appointed Śaṅkhapada, the lord of all, as ruler of the south, and Ketumant as the guardian of the west, he who is the womb of the cosmic egg.
The Lord of Creatures made Hiraṇyaroman, son of the gods, the guardian of the north; even today, the lords of the directions destroy enemies and protect the earth.
With these four, the king named Pṛthu was first consecrated on earth; when the Cākṣuṣa era ended and the Vaivasvata era began, the Lord of Creatures, marked by the lineage of the Sun, became lord of all that moves and does not move.
Having heard thus, Manu again spoke to Janārdana: 'Tell me the deeds of the former Manus, O Madhusūdana.'
O king, the periods of the Manus, the deeds of the Manus, the measure of time, and that creation—tell me all this in summary.
