पुरा कृतानि पापानि फलन्त्यस्मिंस्तपोधन रोगदौर्गत्यरूपेण तथैवेष्टवधेन च
Sins committed in the past, O ascetic, bear fruit here as disease, poverty, ugliness, and also through the death of the desired one.
तद्विघाताय वक्ष्यामि सदा कल्पाणकारकम् सप्तमीस्नपनं नाम जनपीडाविनाशनम्
For the removal of these, I will explain the ritual called saptamī-snāpana, which creates auspiciousness and destroys afflictions among people.
बालानां मरणं यत्र क्षीरपाणां प्रदृश्यते तद्वद्वृद्धातुराणां च यौवने चापि वर्तताम्
Where the death of children who drink milk is seen, so too for the elderly and the sick, and even for those in their youth.
शान्तये तत्र वक्ष्यामि मृतवत्साभिषेचनम् एतद् एवाद्भुतोद्वेगचित्तभ्रमविनाशनम्
For their peace, I will describe the consecration for a child who has died; this alone destroys the agitation of wonder and confusion of mind.
भविष्यति च वाराहो यत्र कल्पस्तपोधन वैवस्वतश्च तत्रापि यदा तु मनुरुत्तमः
There will be a boar incarnation, O ascetic, when the supreme Manu Vaivasvata appears there as the best among men.
भविष्यति च तत्रैव पञ्चविंशतिमं यदा कृतं नाम युगं तत्र हैहयान्वयवर्धनः भविता नृपतिर्वीरः कृतवीर्यः प्रतापवान्
And there, when the twenty-fifth cycle named Kṛta occurs, a king of the Haihaya lineage, Kṛtavīrya, powerful and heroic, will arise.
स सप्तद्वीपमखिलं पालयिष्यति भूतलम् यावद्वर्षसहस्राणि सप्तसप्तति नारद
He will rule the entire earth of seven continents, O Nārada, for seventy-seven thousand years.
जातमात्रं च तस्यापि यावत्पुत्रशतं तथा च्यवनस्य तु शापेन विनाशमपयास्यति
And as soon as he is born, until he has a hundred sons, by the curse of Cyavana, he will depart from life.
सहस्रबाहुश्च यदा भविता तस्य वै सुतः कुरङ्गनयनः श्रीमान् सम्भूतो नृपलक्षणैः
When Sahasrabāhu, his son, is born—blessed, with eyes like a deer, possessing the marks of a king.
कृतवीर्यस्तदाराध्य सहस्रांशुं दिवाकरम् उपवासैर्व्रतैर्दिव्यैर् वेदसूक्तैश्च नारद पुत्रस्य जीवनायालम् एतत्स्नानमवाप्स्यति
Kṛtavīrya, worshipping the thousand-rayed Sun with fasting, vows, and divine Vedic hymns, O Nārada, will obtain this bathing ritual for the life of his son.
कृतवीर्येण वै पृष्ट इदं वक्ष्यति भास्करः अशेषदुष्टशमनं सदा कल्मषनाशनम्
When asked by Kṛtavīrya, the Sun will explain this: always the destroyer of all evils, the remover of all impurity.
अलं क्लेशेन महता पुत्रस्तव नराधिप भविष्यति चिरंजीवी किंतु कल्मषनाशनम्
Enough of great suffering, your son, O king, will live long; but this is the remover of impurity.
सप्तमीस्नपनं वक्ष्ये सर्वलोकहिताय वै जातस्य मृतवत्सायाः सप्तमे मासि नारद अथवा शुक्लसप्तम्याम् एतत्सर्वं प्रशस्यते
I will describe the saptamī-snāpana for the welfare of all worlds; for a child who has died, in the seventh month, O Nārada, or on the bright seventh day, this is all highly praised.
ग्रहताराबलं लब्ध्वा कृत्वा ब्राह्मणवाचनम् बालस्य जन्मनक्षत्रं वर्जयेत्तां तिथिं बुधः तद्वद्वृद्धातुराणां च कृत्यं स्यादितरेषु च
Having obtained the strength of planets and stars, and performed the recitation by a Brahmin, one should avoid the birth star and that lunar day for the child; likewise for the elderly and the sick, and in other cases, the prescribed action should be done.
गोमयेनानुलिप्तायां भूमावेकाग्निवत्तदा तण्डुलै रक्तशालीयैश् चरुं गोक्षीरसंयुतम् निर्वपेत्सूर्यरुद्राभ्यां तन्मन्त्राभ्यां विधानतः
On earth smeared with cow dung, a single fire should be kindled; then, with red rice grains and mixed with cow's milk, a sacrificial offering is to be prepared for Surya and Rudra, using their respective mantras according to the prescribed method.
कीर्तयेत्सूर्यदेवत्यं सप्तर्चं च घृताहुतीः जुहुयाद्रुद्रसूक्तेन तद्वद्रुद्राय नारद
One should recite the seven-verse hymn dedicated to Surya, and offer oblations of clarified butter, using the Rudra hymn; likewise, O Narada, for Rudra.
होतव्याः समिधश्चात्र तथैवार्कपलाशयोः यवकृष्णतिलैर्होमः कर्तव्यो ऽष्टशतं पुनः
Here, the fuel sticks must be offered, and similarly, from arka and palasha trees; the oblation should be made with barley and black sesame seeds, totaling eight hundred times again.
व्याहृतीभिस्तथाज्येन तथैवाष्टशतं पुनः हुत्वा स्नानं च कर्तव्यं मङ्गलं येन धीमता
With the sacred utterances and clarified butter, again eight hundred offerings should be made; after the oblation, a ceremonial bath must be performed by the wise.
विप्रेण वेदविदुषा विधिवद्दर्भपाणिना स्थापयित्वा तु चतुरः कुम्भान्कोणेषु शोभनान्
A Brahmin learned in the Vedas, holding darbha grass, should properly place four auspicious pots at the corners.
पञ्चमं च पुनर्मध्ये दध्यक्षतविभूषितम् स्थापयेदव्रणं कुम्भं सप्तर्चेनाभिमन्त्रितम्
Then, a fifth pot, adorned with curd and unbroken grains, should be placed in the center, unblemished and consecrated with the seven-verse hymn.
सौरेण तीर्थतोयेन पूर्णं रत्नसमन्वितम् सर्वान्सर्वौषधैर्युक्तान् पञ्चगव्यसमन्वितान् पञ्चरत्नफलैः पुष्पैर् वासोभिः परिवेष्टयेत्
Filled with water from a solar holy place and set with gems, containing all medicinal herbs and mixed with five products of the cow, the pot should be surrounded with five kinds of gems, fruits, flowers, and garments.
गजाश्वरथ्यावल्मीकात् संगमाद्ध्रदगोकुलात् संशुद्धां मृदमानीय सर्वेष्वेव विनिक्षिपेत्
Clean earth should be brought from the elephant, horse, chariot, anthill, confluence, pond, and cow pen, and placed in all the pots.
चतुर्ष्वपि च कुम्भेषु रत्नगर्भेषु मध्यमम् गृहीत्वा ब्राह्मणस्तत्र सौरान्मन्त्रानुदीरयेत्
From the four gem-filled pots, the Brahmin should take the central one and recite solar mantras over it.
नारीभिः सप्तसंख्याभिर् अव्यङ्गाङ्गीभिरत्र च पूजिताभिर्यथाशक्त्या माल्यवस्त्रविभूषणैः सविप्राभिश्च कर्तव्यं मृतवत्साभिषेचनम्
With seven women, each without bodily blemish, worshipped according to their ability with garlands, garments, and ornaments, together with Brahmins, the sprinkling of the child with earth should be performed.
दीर्घायुरस्तु बालो ऽयं जीवत्पुत्रा च भामिनी आदित्यश्चन्द्रमाः सार्धं ग्रहनक्षत्रमण्डलैः
May this child have a long life, and may the radiant woman bear living sons; may the Sun and Moon, along with the hosts of planets and stars,
सशक्रा लोकपाला वै ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेश्वराः ते ते चान्ये च देवौघाः सदा पान्तु कुमारकम्
May Indra, the guardians of the worlds, Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara, and all other hosts of gods always protect the boy.
मित्रः शनिर्वा हुतभुग् ये च बालग्रहाः क्वचित् पीडां कुर्वन्तु बालस्य मा मातुर्जनकस्य वै
Let Mitra, Shani, Agni, and those planetary deities who afflict children, wherever they may cause harm, not trouble the child, nor his mother or father.
ततः शुक्लाम्बरधरा कुमारपतिसंयुता सप्तकं पूजयेद्भक्त्या स्त्रीणामथ गुरुं पुनः
Then, dressed in white garments and accompanied by the guardian of children, the group of seven women should be worshipped with devotion by the women, and again the teacher.
काञ्चनीं च ततः कुर्यात् ताम्रपात्रोपरिस्थिताम् प्रतिमां धर्मराजस्य गुरवे विनिवेदयेत्
Then, a golden image should be made, placed upon a copper vessel, and the image of Dharmaraja should be presented to the teacher.
वस्त्रकाञ्चनरत्नौघैर् भक्ष्यैः सघृतपायसैः पूजयेद्ब्राह्मणांस्तद्वद् वित्तशाठ्यविवर्जितः
Brahmins should be worshipped in the same way, with garments, gold, heaps of gems, and food with clarified butter and rice pudding, free from miserliness.
