May all beings in the three worlds, both stationary and moving, joined with Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and the sun, burn away sin.
Having invoked thus, and sprinkled with those pots endowed with qualities, with mantras from Ṛg, Yajur, and Sāma, with white garlands and ointments, one should worship the chosen deities and brāhmaṇas with gifts of cloth and cows.
Then, one should inscribe these very mantras, accompanied by hand gestures, on a cloth or lotus, together with the five gems.
The best of twice-born should place it on the head of the sacrificer; then, he should lead the ritual in accordance with the eclipse.
Facing east, having worshipped and saluted the chosen deity, after the lunar eclipse is over, having given cows and performed auspicious rites, and having bathed, one should present that cloth to a brāhmaṇa.
Whoever performs the bathing for the planets according to this procedure will not suffer affliction from the planets nor loss of relatives.
One attains the highest accomplishment, rarely subject to rebirth; during a solar eclipse, one should always recite the name of the Sun in mantras.
Superior padmarāga gems and a beautiful tawny-colored one should be given to the lord of the night during lunar and solar eclipses.
Whoever listens to this daily, or causes it to be heard by others, becomes free from all sins and is honored in the realm of Indra.
What action should be taken in times of wonder or distress? By what means is misfortune destroyed? What is desired in rituals like the consecration for a child who has died?
Sins committed in the past, O ascetic, bear fruit here as disease, poverty, ugliness, and also through the death of the desired one.
For the removal of these, I will explain the ritual called saptamī-snāpana, which creates auspiciousness and destroys afflictions among people.
Where the death of children who drink milk is seen, so too for the elderly and the sick, and even for those in their youth.
For their peace, I will describe the consecration for a child who has died; this alone destroys the agitation of wonder and confusion of mind.
There will be a boar incarnation, O ascetic, when the supreme Manu Vaivasvata appears there as the best among men.
And there, when the twenty-fifth cycle named Kṛta occurs, a king of the Haihaya lineage, Kṛtavīrya, powerful and heroic, will arise.
He will rule the entire earth of seven continents, O Nārada, for seventy-seven thousand years.
And as soon as he is born, until he has a hundred sons, by the curse of Cyavana, he will depart from life.
When Sahasrabāhu, his son, is born—blessed, with eyes like a deer, possessing the marks of a king.
Kṛtavīrya, worshipping the thousand-rayed Sun with fasting, vows, and divine Vedic hymns, O Nārada, will obtain this bathing ritual for the life of his son.
When asked by Kṛtavīrya, the Sun will explain this: always the destroyer of all evils, the remover of all impurity.
Enough of great suffering, your son, O king, will live long; but this is the remover of impurity.
I will describe the saptamī-snāpana for the welfare of all worlds; for a child who has died, in the seventh month, O Nārada, or on the bright seventh day, this is all highly praised.
Having obtained the strength of planets and stars, and performed the recitation by a Brahmin, one should avoid the birth star and that lunar day for the child; likewise for the elderly and the sick, and in other cases, the prescribed action should be done.
On earth smeared with cow dung, a single fire should be kindled; then, with red rice grains and mixed with cow's milk, a sacrificial offering is to be prepared for Surya and Rudra, using their respective mantras according to the prescribed method.
One should recite the seven-verse hymn dedicated to Surya, and offer oblations of clarified butter, using the Rudra hymn; likewise, O Narada, for Rudra.
Here, the fuel sticks must be offered, and similarly, from arka and palasha trees; the oblation should be made with barley and black sesame seeds, totaling eight hundred times again.
With the sacred utterances and clarified butter, again eight hundred offerings should be made; after the oblation, a ceremonial bath must be performed by the wise.
A Brahmin learned in the Vedas, holding darbha grass, should properly place four auspicious pots at the corners.
Then, a fifth pot, adorned with curd and unbroken grains, should be placed in the center, unblemished and consecrated with the seven-verse hymn.
