स्फटिकं चन्दनं श्वेतं तीर्थवारि ससर्षपम् राजदन्तं सकुमुदं तथैवोशीरगुग्गुलम् एतत्सर्वं विनिक्षिप्य कुम्भेष्वावाहयेत्सुरान्
Place crystal, white sandalwood, water from holy places with mustard seeds, royal elephant tusk with kumuda, as well as uśīra and guggulu; having deposited all these in the pots, invoke the gods.
सर्वे समुद्राः सरितस् तीर्थानि जलदा नदाः आयान्तु यजमानस्य दुरितक्षयकारकाः
May all the oceans, rivers, holy places, clouds, and streams come for the sacrificer, to destroy sin.
यो ऽसौ वज्रधरो देव आदित्यानां प्रभुर्मतः सहस्रनयनश्चेन्द्रो ग्रहपीडां व्यपोहतु
May that god, bearer of the thunderbolt, regarded as the lord of the Ādityas, Indra of a thousand eyes, remove the affliction caused by the planets.
मुखं यः सर्वदेवानां सप्तार्चिरमितद्युतिः चन्द्रोपरागसम्भूताम् अग्निः पीडां व्यपोहतु
May Agni, whose face is that of all the gods, whose seven flames shine with unmatched brilliance, remove the affliction arising from the eclipse of the moon.
यः कर्मसाक्षी भूतानां धर्मो महिषवाहनः यमश्चन्द्रोपरागोत्थां मम पीडां व्यपोहतु
May Yama, the witness of deeds among beings, riding the buffalo, remove my affliction arising from the eclipse of the moon.
रक्षोगणाधिपः साक्षात् प्रलयानलसंनिभः खड्गव्यग्रो ऽतिभीमश्च रक्षःपीडां व्यपोहतु
May the lord of the hosts of demons, resembling the fire of dissolution, fierce with sword in hand and terrifying, remove the affliction caused by demons.
नागपाशधरो देवः साक्षान्मकरवाहनः स जलाधिपतिश् चन्द्रग्रहपीडां व्यपोहतु
May the god who holds the serpent noose, who rides the makara, and is lord of the waters, remove the affliction caused by the lunar eclipse.
प्राणरूपेण यो लोकान् पाति कृष्णमृगप्रियः वायुश्चन्द्रोपरागोत्थां पीडामत्र व्यपोहतु
May Vāyu, who protects the worlds in the form of breath and loves the black antelope, remove here the affliction arising from the eclipse of the moon.
यो ऽसौ निधिपतिर्देवः खड्गशूलगदाधरः चन्द्रोपरागकलुषं धनदो मे व्यपोहतु
May the god who is lord of treasures, bearing sword, spear, and mace, remove the impurity caused by the lunar eclipse and grant me wealth.
यो ऽसाविन्दुधरो देवः पिनाकी वृषवाहनः चन्द्रोपरागजां पीडां विनाशयतु शंकरः
May Śaṃkara, the god who bears the moon, who wields the bow and rides the bull, destroy the affliction arising from the lunar eclipse.
त्रैलोक्ये यानि भूतानि स्थावराणि चराणि च ब्रह्मविष्ण्वर्कयुक्तानि तानि पापं दहन्तु वै
May all beings in the three worlds, both stationary and moving, joined with Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and the sun, burn away sin.
एवमामन्त्र्य तैः कुम्भैर् अभिषिक्तो गुणान्वितैः ऋग्यजुःसाममन्त्रैश्च शुक्लमाल्यानुलेपनैः पूजयेद्वस्त्रगोदानैर् ब्राह्मणानिष्टदेवताः
Having invoked thus, and sprinkled with those pots endowed with qualities, with mantras from Ṛg, Yajur, and Sāma, with white garlands and ointments, one should worship the chosen deities and brāhmaṇas with gifts of cloth and cows.
एतानेव ततो मन्त्रान् विलिखेत् करकान्वितान् वस्त्रपट्टे ऽथवा पद्मे पञ्चरत्नसमन्वितान्
Then, one should inscribe these very mantras, accompanied by hand gestures, on a cloth or lotus, together with the five gems.
यजमानस्य शिरसि निदध्युस्ते द्विजोत्तमाः ततो ऽतिवाहयेद्वेलाम् उपरागानुगामिनीम्
The best of twice-born should place it on the head of the sacrificer; then, he should lead the ritual in accordance with the eclipse.
प्राङ्मुखः पूजयित्वा तु नमस्यन्निष्टदेवताम् चन्द्रग्रहे विनिर्वृत्ते कृतगोदानमङ्गलः कृतस्नानाय तं पट्टं ब्राह्मणाय निवेदयेत्
Facing east, having worshipped and saluted the chosen deity, after the lunar eclipse is over, having given cows and performed auspicious rites, and having bathed, one should present that cloth to a brāhmaṇa.
अनेन विधिना यस्तु ग्रहस्नानं समाचरेत् न तस्य ग्रहपीडा स्यान् न च बन्धुजनक्षयः
Whoever performs the bathing for the planets according to this procedure will not suffer affliction from the planets nor loss of relatives.
परमां सिद्धिमाप्नोति पुनरावृत्तिदुर्लभाम् सूर्यग्रहे सूर्यनाम सदा मन्त्रेषु कीर्तयेत्
One attains the highest accomplishment, rarely subject to rebirth; during a solar eclipse, one should always recite the name of the Sun in mantras.
अधिकाः पद्मरागाः स्युः कपिलां च सुशोभनाम् प्रयच्छेच्च निशां पत्ये चन्द्रसूर्योपरागयोः
Superior padmarāga gems and a beautiful tawny-colored one should be given to the lord of the night during lunar and solar eclipses.
य इदं शृणुयान्नित्यं श्रावयेद्वापि मानवः सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः शक्रलोके महीयते
Whoever listens to this daily, or causes it to be heard by others, becomes free from all sins and is honored in the realm of Indra.
किमुद्वेगाद्भुते कृत्यम् अलक्ष्मीः केन हन्यते मृतवत्साभिषेकादिकार्येषु च किमिष्यते
What action should be taken in times of wonder or distress? By what means is misfortune destroyed? What is desired in rituals like the consecration for a child who has died?
पुरा कृतानि पापानि फलन्त्यस्मिंस्तपोधन रोगदौर्गत्यरूपेण तथैवेष्टवधेन च
Sins committed in the past, O ascetic, bear fruit here as disease, poverty, ugliness, and also through the death of the desired one.
तद्विघाताय वक्ष्यामि सदा कल्पाणकारकम् सप्तमीस्नपनं नाम जनपीडाविनाशनम्
For the removal of these, I will explain the ritual called saptamī-snāpana, which creates auspiciousness and destroys afflictions among people.
बालानां मरणं यत्र क्षीरपाणां प्रदृश्यते तद्वद्वृद्धातुराणां च यौवने चापि वर्तताम्
Where the death of children who drink milk is seen, so too for the elderly and the sick, and even for those in their youth.
शान्तये तत्र वक्ष्यामि मृतवत्साभिषेचनम् एतद् एवाद्भुतोद्वेगचित्तभ्रमविनाशनम्
For their peace, I will describe the consecration for a child who has died; this alone destroys the agitation of wonder and confusion of mind.
भविष्यति च वाराहो यत्र कल्पस्तपोधन वैवस्वतश्च तत्रापि यदा तु मनुरुत्तमः
There will be a boar incarnation, O ascetic, when the supreme Manu Vaivasvata appears there as the best among men.
भविष्यति च तत्रैव पञ्चविंशतिमं यदा कृतं नाम युगं तत्र हैहयान्वयवर्धनः भविता नृपतिर्वीरः कृतवीर्यः प्रतापवान्
And there, when the twenty-fifth cycle named Kṛta occurs, a king of the Haihaya lineage, Kṛtavīrya, powerful and heroic, will arise.
स सप्तद्वीपमखिलं पालयिष्यति भूतलम् यावद्वर्षसहस्राणि सप्तसप्तति नारद
He will rule the entire earth of seven continents, O Nārada, for seventy-seven thousand years.
जातमात्रं च तस्यापि यावत्पुत्रशतं तथा च्यवनस्य तु शापेन विनाशमपयास्यति
And as soon as he is born, until he has a hundred sons, by the curse of Cyavana, he will depart from life.
सहस्रबाहुश्च यदा भविता तस्य वै सुतः कुरङ्गनयनः श्रीमान् सम्भूतो नृपलक्षणैः
When Sahasrabāhu, his son, is born—blessed, with eyes like a deer, possessing the marks of a king.
कृतवीर्यस्तदाराध्य सहस्रांशुं दिवाकरम् उपवासैर्व्रतैर्दिव्यैर् वेदसूक्तैश्च नारद पुत्रस्य जीवनायालम् एतत्स्नानमवाप्स्यति
Kṛtavīrya, worshipping the thousand-rayed Sun with fasting, vows, and divine Vedic hymns, O Nārada, will obtain this bathing ritual for the life of his son.
