संवत्सरान्ते लवणं गुडकुम्भं च सर्जिकाम् चन्दनं नेत्रपट्टं च सहिरण्याम्बुजेन तु
At the year's end, salt, a jar of jaggery, sārjikā, sandalwood, an eye-cloth, and a golden lotus should be given.
उमामहेश्वरं हैमं तद्वदिक्षुफलैर्युतम् सतूलावरणां शय्यां सविश्रामां निवेदयेत् सपत्नीकाय विप्राय गौरी मे प्रीयतामिति
A golden image of Umāmaheśvara, adorned with sugarcane fruits, a bed with cotton covering and a pillow should be offered to a brāhmaṇa with his wife, saying, "May Gaurī be pleased with me."
आर्द्रानन्दकरी नाम्ना तृतीयैषा सनातनी यामुपोष्य नरो याति शम्भोर्यत्परमं पदम्
This is the third, eternal fast called Ārdrānandakari; by observing it, a person attains the supreme abode of Śambhu.
इह लोके सदानन्दम् आप्नोति धनसम्पदः आयुरारोग्यसम्पत्त्या न कश्चिच्छोकमाप्नुयात्
In this world, one obtains constant joy, wealth, and prosperity; with long life and health, no one experiences sorrow.
नारी वा कुरुते या तु कुमारी विधवा च या सापि तत्फलमाप्नोति देव्यनुग्रहलालिता
Whether a woman, a maiden, or a widow observes it, she too attains its fruit, cherished by the grace of the goddess.
प्रतिपक्षमुपोष्यैवं मन्त्रार्चनविधानवित् रुद्राणीलोकमभ्येति पुनरावृत्तिदुर्लभम्
By observing it every fortnight, with knowledge of the ritual of mantra worship, one reaches the realm of Rudrāṇī, where return is rare.
य इदं शृणुयान्नित्यं श्रावयेद्वापि मानवः शक्रलोके स गन्धर्वैः पूज्यते ऽपि युगत्रयम्
Whoever listens to this daily or causes it to be heard, that person is honored by Gandharvas in Indra's world for three ages.
आनन्ददां सकलदुःखहरां तृतीयां या स्त्री करोत्यविधवा विधवाथ वापि सा स्वे गृहे सुखशतान्यनुभूय भूयो गौरीपदं सदयिता दयिता प्रयाति
A woman, whether married or widowed, who observes this third fast that brings joy and removes all suffering, experiences hundreds of pleasures in her own home and then, beloved, attains Gaurī's abode.
अथान्यामपि वक्ष्यामि तृतीयां सर्वकामदाम् यस्यां दत्तं हुतं जप्तं सर्वं भवति चाक्षयम्
Now I will speak of another third fast that grants all desires; whatever is given, offered, or recited in it becomes inexhaustible.
वैशाखशुक्लपक्षे तु तृतीया यैरुपोषिता अक्षयं फलमाप्नोति सर्वस्य सुकृतस्य च
Those who observe the third day in the bright half of Vaiśākha obtain inexhaustible fruit for all their good deeds.
सा तथा कृत्तिकोपेता विशेषेण सुपूजिता तत्र दत्तं हुतं जप्तं सर्वमक्षयमुच्यते
When it coincides with Kṛttikā and is especially well worshipped, whatever is given, offered, or recited there is said to be inexhaustible.
अक्षया संततिस्तस्यास् तस्यां सुकृतमक्षयम् अक्षतैः पूज्यते विष्णुस् तेन साप्यक्षया स्मृता अक्षतैस्तु नराः स्नाता विष्णोर्दत्त्वा तथाक्षतान्
His lineage becomes inexhaustible, and his merit on that day is inexhaustible; he is worshipped with unbroken rice by Viṣṇu, and thus it is called inexhaustible. Men, bathed and offering unbroken rice to Viṣṇu, likewise with unbroken rice—
विप्रेषु दत्त्वा तानेव तथा सक्तून् सुसंकृतान् यथान्नभुङ्महाभागः फलमक्षय्यमश्नुते
Giving the same to Brahmins, as well as well-prepared flour cakes, as one eats food, O fortunate one, he enjoys inexhaustible fruit.
एकामप्युक्तवत्कृत्वा तृतीयां विधिवन्नरः एतासामपि सर्वासां तृतीयानां फलं भवेत्
Even by observing just one of these third days properly, a person attains the fruit of all these third-day fasts.
तृतीयायां समभ्यर्च्य सोपवासो जनार्दनम् राजसूयफलं प्राप्य गतिमग्र्यां च विन्दति
By worshipping Janārdana with fasting on the third day, one obtains the fruit of a Rājasūya and attains the highest state.
मधुरा भारती केन व्रतेन मधुसूदन तथैव जनसौभाग्यम् अतिविद्यासु कौशलम्
By what vow, O Madhusūdana, does sweet speech arise, as well as great fortune among people and skill in all knowledge?
अभेदश्चापि दम्पत्योस् तथा बन्धुजनेन च आयुश्च विपुलं पुंसां तन्मे कथय माधव
And also harmony between husband and wife, among relatives, and abundant life for men—tell me this, O Mādhava.
सम्यक्पृष्टं त्वया राजञ् छृणु सारस्वतं व्रतम् यस्य संकीर्तनादेव तुष्यतीह सरस्वती
You have asked well, O king; listen to the Sarasvatī vow, by whose mere recitation Sarasvatī is pleased here.
यो यद्भक्तः पुमान्कुर्याद् एतद्व्रतमनुत्तमम् तद्वासरादौ सम्पूज्य विप्रानेतान्समाचरेत्
Any devoted man who performs this excellent vow, at the beginning of that day, should worship Brahmins and honor them.
अथवादित्यवारेण ग्रहताराबलेन च पायसं भोजयेद्विप्रान् कृत्वा ब्राह्मणवाचनम्
Or, on Sunday, according to the strength of planets and stars, he should feed Brahmins with rice pudding, having them recite the Brahminical texts.
शुक्लवस्त्राणि दत्त्वा च सहिरण्यानि शक्तितः गायत्रीं पूजयेद्भक्त्या शुक्लमाल्यानुलेपनैः
Having given white garments along with gold according to one's ability, one should worship the Gayatri with devotion, using white garlands and ointments.
यथा न देवि भगवान् ब्रह्मलोके पितामहः त्वां परित्यज्य संतिष्ठेत् तथा भव वरप्रदा
O Goddess, just as the Blessed Lord, the Grandfather in the world of Brahma, would not remain after abandoning you, so may you be the granter of boons.
वेदाः शास्त्राणि सर्वाणि गीतनृत्यादिकं च यत् न विहीनं त्वया देवि तथा मे सन्तु सिद्धयः
May all the Vedas, scriptures, and arts such as singing and dancing, which are not deprived of you, O Goddess, likewise grant me accomplishments.
लक्ष्मीर्मेधा धरा पुष्टिर् गौरी तुष्टिः प्रभा मतिः एताभिः पाहि चाष्टाभिस् तनुभिर्मां सरस्वति
Lakshmi, Medha, Dhara, Pushti, Gauri, Tushti, Prabha, and Mati—by these eight forms, protect me, O Sarasvati.
एवं सम्पूज्य गायत्रीं वीणाक्षमणिधारिणीम् शुक्लपुष्पाक्षतैर् भक्त्या सकमण्डलुपुस्तकाम् मौनव्रतेन भुञ्जीत सायं प्रातस्तु धर्मवित्
Thus, having worshipped Gayatri, who holds the vina and rosary, with white flowers and unbroken rice, with devotion, and who carries the water-pot and book, the knower of dharma should eat in silence in the evening and morning.
पञ्चम्यां प्रतिपक्षं च पूजयेद्ब्रह्मवासिनीम् तथैव तण्डुलप्रस्थं घृतपात्रेण संयुतम् क्षीरं दद्याद्धिरण्यं च गायत्री प्रीयतामिति
On the fifth day of each fortnight, one should worship the Brahma-dwelling Goddess in the same way, offering a measure of rice with ghee in a vessel, milk, and gold, saying, 'May Gayatri be pleased.'
संध्यायां च तथा मौनम् एतत्कुर्वन्समाचरेत् नान्तरा भोजनं कुर्याद् यावन्मासास्त्रयोदश
At twilight, likewise, one should observe silence and perform this practice, not taking food in between, for thirteen months.
समाप्ते तु व्रते कुर्याद् भोजनं शुक्लतण्डुलैः पूर्वं सवस्त्रयुग्मं च दद्याद्विप्राय भोजनम्
Upon completion of the vow, one should eat food made from white rice, and beforehand, give a pair of garments and food to a Brahmin.
देव्या वितानं घण्टां च सितनेत्रे पयस्विनीम् चन्दनं वस्त्रयुग्मं च दद्याच्च शिखरं पुनः
One should give to the Goddess a canopy, a bell with white eyes, a milk-giving cow, sandalwood, a pair of garments, and again a pinnacle.
तथोपदेष्टारमपि भक्त्या सम्पूजयेद्गुरुम् वित्तशाठ्येन रहितो वस्त्रमाल्यानुलेपनैः
Likewise, one should worship the instructor, the guru, with devotion, free from miserliness, with garments, garlands, and ointments.
