Kashyapa, delighted by the greatness of the vow, came and again performed austerities for her, who was harsh but endowed with beauty and youth.
He prompted her to choose a boon; she then chose a boon: a son capable of slaying Indra, possessing immense energy.
I choose the great soul, the destroyer of all immortals, she said; Kashyapa spoke the words: the mighty slayer of Indra.
I myself will grant it here; but let this be done, O auspicious one. Āpastamba will perform the sacrifice for a son today, O virtuous lady.
Then I will arrange for the conception of the destroyer of Indra's enemies; Āpastamba then performed the son-offering sacrifice with abundant wealth.
He offered, saying, 'Let him be the enemy of Indra,' in detail; the gods rejoiced, the demons became hostile, and the Danavas turned away.
Kashyapa then placed the embryo in Diti and spoke to her again: You must make effort, O beautiful one, regarding this embryo.
For one hundred years in this very hermitage, O fair one, the pregnant woman must not count the days nor partake of food.

Therefore, you should act with diligence in this pregnancy, following this conduct; may you be well. I will depart, thus she was told again.
Before all creatures, she vanished right there; then she followed the procedure spoken by Kashyapa.
Then, Indra, fearful, approached Diti's side, leaving the abode of the gods, and remained there, serving her.
Desiring to find a breach in Diti, the lord of the gods became humble, undistracted, and outwardly calm.
Unaware of his purpose, he acted virtuously; then, at the end of a hundred years, with three days remaining,
She considered herself accomplished, her mind joyful and amazed; without cleansing her feet, she slept with her hair unbound.
Overcome by sleep, she lay with her head to the south during the day; then, finding that opportunity, Shachi's husband entered.
With his thunderbolt, the lord of the gods divided that embryo into seven parts; then seven sons were born, radiant as the sun.
