होमश्च सर्षपैः कार्यो यवैः कृष्णतिलैस्तथा पलाशसमिधः शस्ताश् चतुर्थे ऽह्नि तथोत्सवः दक्षिणा च पुनस्तद्वद् देया तत्रापि शक्तितः
The fire offering should be performed with mustard seeds, barley, and black sesame, using palāśa wood as fuel; on the fourth day, there should be a festival, and again, gifts should be given according to ability.
यद्यदिष्टतमं किंचित् तत्तद् दद्यादमत्सरी आचार्ये द्विगुणं दद्यात् प्रणिपत्य विसर्जयेत्
Whatever is most desired, one should give that without envy; to the teacher, double should be given, and after bowing, he should be dismissed.
अनेन विधिना यस्तु कुर्याद्वृक्षोत्सवं बुधः सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति फलं चानन्त्यमश्नुते
Whoever, with this procedure, celebrates the festival of trees with wisdom, attains all desires and enjoys endless reward.
यश्चैकमपि राजेन्द्र वृक्षं संस्थापयेन्नरः सो ऽपि स्वर्गे वसेद्राजन् यावदिन्द्रायुतत्रयम्
And even if a man establishes a single tree, O king, he too dwells in heaven, O king, for three times ten thousand years of Indra.
भूतान्भव्यांश्च मनुजांस् तारयेद्द्रुमसंमितान् परमां सिद्धिमाप्नोति पुनरावृत्तिदुर्लभाम्
One who saves beings—past and future—by treating them as equal to trees attains the highest perfection, a state where rebirth is exceedingly rare.
य इदं शृणुयान्नित्यं श्रावयेद्वापि मानवः सो ऽपि सम्पूजितो देवैर् ब्रह्मलोके महीयते
A person who listens to this regularly, or has it recited, is honored by the gods and is exalted in the world of Brahma.
तथैवान्यत्प्रवक्ष्यामि सर्वकामफलप्रदम् सौभाग्यशयनं नाम यत्पुराणविदो विदुः
Now I will tell you another rite, which grants all desired results, known by those learned in the Purāṇas as the 'Saubhāgya-śayana.'
पुरा दग्धेषु लोकेषु भूर्भुवःस्वर्महादिषु सौभाग्यं सर्वभूतानाम् एकस्थमभवत्तदा वैकुण्ठं स्वर्गमासाद्य विष्णोर् वक्षःस्थलस्थितम्
Long ago, when the worlds—Bhū, Bhuvaḥ, Svar, and Mahas—were burned, the fortune of all beings became united in one place, reaching Vaikuṇṭha and resting on Viṣṇu's chest.
ततः कालेन महता पुनः सर्गविधौ नृप अहंकारावृते लोके प्रधानपुरुषान्विते
Then, after a long time, during the next creation, when the world was enveloped in ego and filled with the primordial elements and the Supreme Person—
स्पर्धायां च प्रवृत्तायां कमलासनकृष्णयोः लिङ्गाकारा समुद्भूता वह्नेर्ज्वालातिभीषणा तयाभितप्तस्य हरेर् वक्षसस्तद्विनिःसृतम्
When rivalry arose between the lotus-seated one (Brahmā) and Kṛṣṇa, a fierce, flame-like form appeared, terrifying as fire, and from the burning of Hari's chest, that essence emerged.
वक्षःस्थलं समाश्रित्य विष्णोः सौभाग्यमास्थितम् रसरूपं ततो यावत् प्राप्नोति वसुधातलम्
Taking refuge on Viṣṇu's chest, that fortune remained there in the form of essence, until it reached the surface of the earth.
उत्क्षिप्तमन्तरिक्षे तद् ब्रह्मपुत्रेण धीमता दक्षेण पीतमात्रं तद् रूपलावण्यकारकम्
That essence was lifted into the sky by the wise son of Brahmā, Dakṣa, and as soon as he drank it, it became the source of beauty and charm.
बलं तेजो महज्जातं दक्षस्य परमेष्ठिनः शेषं यदपतद्भूमाव् अष्टधा समजायत
Great strength and brilliance arose in Dakṣa, the son of the Supreme Lord; what remained fell to the earth and split into eight parts.
ततो जनानां संजाताः सप्त सौभाग्यदायिकाः इक्षवो रसराजाश्च निष्पावाजाजिधान्यकम्
From that, seven bestowers of fortune were born among people: sugarcane, king of juices, peas, barley, and grains.
विकारवच्च गोक्षीरं कुसुम्भं कुङ्कुमं तथा लवणं चाष्टमं तद्वत् सौभाग्याष्टकमुच्यते
Likewise, as transformations: cow's milk, safflower, and saffron, and the eighth is salt—these are called the eight forms of fortune.
पीतं यद्ब्रह्मपुत्रेण योगज्ञानविदा पुनः दुहिता साभवत्तस्य या सतीत्यभिधीयते
What was drunk by the son of Brahmā, the knower of yoga and wisdom, became his daughter, who is known as Satī.
लोकानतीत्य लालित्याल् ललिता तेन चोच्यते त्रैलोक्यसुन्दरीम् एनाम् उपयेमे पिनाकधृक्
Because she surpassed all worlds in grace, she is called Lalitā; the bearer of the bow (Śiva) married her, the most beautiful in the three worlds.
या देवी सौभाग्यमयी भुक्तिमुक्तिफलप्रदा तामाराध्य पुमान्भक्त्या नारी वा किं न विन्दति
That goddess, full of fortune, grants both enjoyment and liberation; by worshiping her with devotion, what man or woman would not obtain their desire?
कथमाराधनं तस्या जगद्धात्र्या जनार्दन तद्विधानं जगन्नाथ तत्सर्वं च वदस्व मे
How should one worship that world-sustaining goddess, O Janārdana? Lord of the universe, tell me in detail the procedure for her worship.
वसन्तमासमासाद्य तृतीयायां जनप्रिय शुक्लपक्षस्य पूर्वाह्णे तिलैः स्नानं समाचरेत्
When the month of spring arrives, on the third day, beloved of the people, in the morning of the bright fortnight, one should bathe with sesame seeds.
तस्मिन्नहनि सा देवी किल विश्वात्मना सती पाणिग्रहणकैर् मन्त्रैर् उदूढा वरवर्णिनी
On that day, the goddess Satī, of excellent complexion, was wedded by the soul of the universe with marriage mantras.
तया सहैव देवेशं तृतीयायाम् अथार्चयेत् फलैर्नानाविधैर्धूपैर् दीपनैवेद्यसंयुतैः
On the third day, one should worship the Lord of the gods together with her, offering various fruits, incense, lamps, and food.
प्रतिमां पञ्चगव्येन तथा गन्धोदकेन तु स्नापयित्वार्चयेद् गौरीम् इन्दुशेखरसंयुताम्
After bathing the image with the five products of the cow and with perfumed water, one should worship Gauri, united with the moon-crested one.
नमो ऽस्तु पाटलायै तु पादौ देव्याः शिवस्य तु शिवायेति च संकीर्य जयायै गुल्फयोर् द्वयोः
Salutations to Patala at the feet of the goddess, and to Shiva at the feet of Shiva; uttering 'Shivā' and 'Jaya', one should worship the two ankles.
त्रिगुणायेति रुद्राय भवान्यै जङ्घयोर्युगम् शिवां रुद्रेश्वरायै च विजयायेति जानुनी संकीर्त्य हरिकेशाय तथोरू वरदे नमः
Reciting 'Triguṇa' for Rudra, 'Bhavānī' for the pair of shanks, 'Shivā' for Rudreśvarī, and 'Vijayā' for the knees, one should also offer to Harikeśa and then to the thighs, saying 'O bestower of boons, obeisance!'
ईशायै च कीटं देव्याः शंकरायेति शंकरम् कुक्षिद्वयं च कोटव्यै शूलिने शूलपाणये
To Īśā, the hips of the goddess; to Śaṃkara, the waist; to Koṭavī, both flanks; to the trident-bearer, the trident-wielding one.
मङ्गलायै नमस्तुभ्यम् उदरं चाभिपूजयेत् सर्वात्मने नमो रुद्रम् ईशान्यै च कुचद्वयम्
To Maṅgalā, obeisance—one should especially worship the abdomen; to the all-pervading Rudra, obeisance, and to Īśānī, both breasts.
शिवं वेदात्मने तद्वद् रुद्राण्यै कण्ठमर्चयेत् त्रिपुरघ्नाय विश्वेशम् अनन्तायै करद्वयम्
To Śiva, the embodiment of the Vedas, likewise; to Rudrāṇī, the throat; to the destroyer of Tripura, the lord of all; to Anantā, both hands.
त्रिलोचनाय च हरं बाहू कालानलप्रिये सौभाग्यभवनायेति भूषणानि सदार्चयेत् स्वाहास्वधायै च मुखम् ईश्वरायेति शूलिनम्
To the three-eyed Hara, the arms; to the beloved of the fire of time, the ornaments should always be worshipped as the abode of good fortune; to Svāhā and Svadhā, the mouth; to Īśvara, the trident-bearer.
अशोकमधुवासिन्यै पूज्यावोष्ठौ च भूतिदौ स्थाणवे तु हरं तद्वद् धास्यं चन्द्रमुखप्रिये
To Aśokamadhuvāsini, the lips should be worshipped as bestowers of prosperity; to Sthāṇu, Hara, likewise the teeth; to the beloved of the moon-faced one.
