कूपवापीषु सर्वासु तथा पुष्करिणीषु च एष एव विधिर्दृष्टः प्रतिष्ठासु तथैव च
This same procedure is seen for wells, reservoirs, and all lotus ponds, and likewise for consecrations.
मन्त्रतस्तु विशेषः स्यात् प्रासादाद्यानभूमिषु अयं त्वशक्तावर्धेन विधिर्दृष्टः स्वयम्भुवा अल्पेष्वेकाग्निवत्कृत्वा वित्तशाठ्यादृते नृणाम्
The distinction lies in the mantras for temples and other places not on the ground; this procedure is prescribed by the self-born for those with limited means, performed like a single fire, except for miserliness among people.
प्रावृट्काले स्थिते तोये ह्य् अग्निष्टोमफलं स्मृतम् शरत्काले स्थितं यत्स्यात् तदुक्तफलदायकम् वाजपेयातिरात्राभ्यां हेमन्ते शिशिरे स्थितम्
When the water remains in the rainy season, the result is said to be that of an Agniṣṭoma; in autumn, the result is as previously stated; in winter and cold season, it is equal to Vājapeya and Atirātra.
अश्वमेधसमं प्राहुर् वसन्तसमये स्थितम् ग्रीष्मे ऽपि तत्स्थितं तोयं राजसूयाद्विशिष्यते
In spring, it is declared equal to an Aśvamedha; and in summer, water remaining there surpasses the Rājasūya.
एतान्महाराज विशेषधर्मान् करोति यो ऽप्यागमशुद्धबुद्धिः स याति रुद्रालयमाशु पूतः कल्पाननेकान्दिवि मोदते च
O great king, whoever performs these special duties, even with impure understanding from tradition, quickly attains Rudra's abode, purified, and enjoys countless kalpas in heaven.
अनेकलोकान्स महत्तमादीन् भुक्त्वा परार्धद्वयमङ्गनाभिः सहैव विष्णोः परमं पदं यत् प्राप्नोति तद्यागफलेन भूयः
He enjoys many worlds, both great and lesser, for two parārdhas together with women, and by the fruit of this sacrifice attains again the supreme abode of Viṣṇu.
पादपानां विधिं सूत यथावद्विस्तराद्वद विधिना केन कर्तव्यं पादपोद्यापनं बुधैः
Sūta, describe in detail the proper procedure for planting trees, and by what method the wise should undertake the planting and nurturing of trees.
ये च लोकाः स्मृतास्तेषां तानिदानीं वदस्व नः यत्फलं लभते प्रेत्य तत्सर्वं वक्तुमर्हसि
And tell us now of those worlds that are spoken of—what fruits are obtained after death by such acts; you should declare all this.
पादपानां विधिं वक्ष्ये तथैवोद्यानभूमिषु तडागविधिवत्सर्वम् आसाद्य जगदीश्वर
I shall explain the procedure for trees, likewise for garden grounds, all in accordance with the rules for tanks, O Lord of the world.
ऋत्विङ्मण्डपसम्भारश् चाचार्यश्चैव तद्विधः पूजयेद्ब्राह्मणांस्तद्वद् धेमवस्त्रानुलेपनैः
The assembling of officiating priests, the construction of the pavilion, and the presence of a learned teacher—these should be arranged; and Brahmins should be worshipped with gold, garments, and unguents, accordingly.
सर्वौषध्युदकैः सिक्तान् पिष्टातकविभूषितान् वृक्षान्माल्यैरलंकृत्य वासोभिरभिवेष्टयेत्
After sprinkling the trees with all medicinal waters and adorning them with flour cakes, they should be decorated with garlands and wrapped with cloths.
सूच्या सौवर्णया कार्यं सर्वेषां कर्णवेधनम् अञ्जनं चापि दातव्यं तद्वद्धेमशलाकया
The ear-piercing of all should be performed with a golden needle, and collyrium should also be applied, likewise with a golden stick.
फलानि सप्त चाष्टौ वा कालधौतानि कारयेत् प्रत्येकं सर्ववृक्षाणां वेद्यां तान्यधिवासयेत्
Seven or eight fruits, cleansed in due season, should be prepared for each and every tree, and these should be consecrated on the altar.
धूपो ऽत्र गुग्गुलः श्रेष्ठस् ताम्रपात्रैरधिष्ठितान् सप्तधान्यस्थितान्कृत्वा वस्त्रगन्धानुलेपनैः
Here, guggulu incense is best; placing them in copper vessels, with seven kinds of grains, and anointing with cloth, fragrance, and unguents.
कुम्भान्सर्वेषु वृक्षेषु स्थापयित्वा नरेश्वर सहिरण्यानशेषांस्तान् कृत्वा बलिनिवेदनम्
After placing pots at all the trees, O king, and filling them with gold, one should offer the oblation to the deities.
यथास्वं लोकपालानाम् इन्द्रादीनां विशेषतः वनस्पतेश्च विद्वद्भिर् होमः कार्यो द्विजातिभिः
For each, especially for the guardians of the worlds, beginning with Indra, and for the Lord of trees, learned twice-borns should perform the fire offering.
ततः शुक्लाम्बरधरां सौवर्णकृतभूषणाम् सकांस्यदोहां सौवर्णशृङ्गाभ्याम् अतिशालिनीम् पयस्विनीं वृक्षमध्याद् उत्सृजेद्गामुदङ्मुखीम्
Then, a cow adorned in white cloth, with golden ornaments, yielding abundant milk, with bronze vessels and golden horns, should be released facing north from the midst of the trees.
ततो ऽभिषेकमन्त्रेण वाद्यमङ्गलगीतकैः ऋग्यजुःसाममन्त्रैश्च वारुणैरभितस्तथा तैरेव कुम्भैः स्नपनं कुर्याद्ब्राह्मणपुंगवः
Then, with the consecration mantra, accompanied by music and auspicious songs, and with Ṛk, Yajus, and Sāman hymns, as well as Varuṇa mantras, the foremost Brahmin should bathe the trees with those very pots.
स्नातः शुक्लाम्बरस्तद्वद् यजमानो ऽभिपूजयेत् गोभिर् विभवतः सर्वान् ऋत्विजस्तान्समाहितः
Having bathed and dressed in white, the sacrificer should then worship all the priests with cows, according to his means, with a focused mind.
हेमसूत्रैः सकटकैर् अङ्गुलीयपवित्रकैः वासोभिः शयनीयैश्च तथोपस्करपादुकैः क्षीरेण भोजनं दद्याद् यावद्दिनचतुष्टयम्
He should give them food with milk for four days, along with gold-threaded garments, bracelets, rings, pure cloths, bedding, utensils, and sandals.
होमश्च सर्षपैः कार्यो यवैः कृष्णतिलैस्तथा पलाशसमिधः शस्ताश् चतुर्थे ऽह्नि तथोत्सवः दक्षिणा च पुनस्तद्वद् देया तत्रापि शक्तितः
The fire offering should be performed with mustard seeds, barley, and black sesame, using palāśa wood as fuel; on the fourth day, there should be a festival, and again, gifts should be given according to ability.
यद्यदिष्टतमं किंचित् तत्तद् दद्यादमत्सरी आचार्ये द्विगुणं दद्यात् प्रणिपत्य विसर्जयेत्
Whatever is most desired, one should give that without envy; to the teacher, double should be given, and after bowing, he should be dismissed.
अनेन विधिना यस्तु कुर्याद्वृक्षोत्सवं बुधः सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति फलं चानन्त्यमश्नुते
Whoever, with this procedure, celebrates the festival of trees with wisdom, attains all desires and enjoys endless reward.
यश्चैकमपि राजेन्द्र वृक्षं संस्थापयेन्नरः सो ऽपि स्वर्गे वसेद्राजन् यावदिन्द्रायुतत्रयम्
And even if a man establishes a single tree, O king, he too dwells in heaven, O king, for three times ten thousand years of Indra.
भूतान्भव्यांश्च मनुजांस् तारयेद्द्रुमसंमितान् परमां सिद्धिमाप्नोति पुनरावृत्तिदुर्लभाम्
One who saves beings—past and future—by treating them as equal to trees attains the highest perfection, a state where rebirth is exceedingly rare.
य इदं शृणुयान्नित्यं श्रावयेद्वापि मानवः सो ऽपि सम्पूजितो देवैर् ब्रह्मलोके महीयते
A person who listens to this regularly, or has it recited, is honored by the gods and is exalted in the world of Brahma.
तथैवान्यत्प्रवक्ष्यामि सर्वकामफलप्रदम् सौभाग्यशयनं नाम यत्पुराणविदो विदुः
Now I will tell you another rite, which grants all desired results, known by those learned in the Purāṇas as the 'Saubhāgya-śayana.'
पुरा दग्धेषु लोकेषु भूर्भुवःस्वर्महादिषु सौभाग्यं सर्वभूतानाम् एकस्थमभवत्तदा वैकुण्ठं स्वर्गमासाद्य विष्णोर् वक्षःस्थलस्थितम्
Long ago, when the worlds—Bhū, Bhuvaḥ, Svar, and Mahas—were burned, the fortune of all beings became united in one place, reaching Vaikuṇṭha and resting on Viṣṇu's chest.
ततः कालेन महता पुनः सर्गविधौ नृप अहंकारावृते लोके प्रधानपुरुषान्विते
Then, after a long time, during the next creation, when the world was enveloped in ego and filled with the primordial elements and the Supreme Person—
स्पर्धायां च प्रवृत्तायां कमलासनकृष्णयोः लिङ्गाकारा समुद्भूता वह्नेर्ज्वालातिभीषणा तयाभितप्तस्य हरेर् वक्षसस्तद्विनिःसृतम्
When rivalry arose between the lotus-seated one (Brahmā) and Kṛṣṇa, a fierce, flame-like form appeared, terrifying as fire, and from the burning of Hari's chest, that essence emerged.
