उपवासे ऽप्यशक्तानां नक्तं भोजनमिष्यते यस्मिन्व्रते तदप्यत्र श्रूयतामक्षयं महत्
For those unable to fast, eating at night is permitted in this vow; it is said that even so, one attains great and inexhaustible merit.
आदित्यशयनं नाम यथावच्छंकरार्चनम् येषु नक्षत्रयोगेषु पुराणज्ञाः प्रचक्षते
This is called the Ādityaśayana vow, with proper worship of Śaṅkara, as the knowers of the Purāṇas have declared for certain lunar constellations.
यदा हस्तेन सप्तम्याम् आदित्यस्य दिनं भवेत् सूर्यस्य चाथ संक्रान्तिस् तिथिः सा सार्वकामिकी
When the seventh lunar day falls on Hasta, and it is the day of the Sun, or when there is the Sun’s transit, that date is universally auspicious for all desires.
उमामहेश्वरस्यार्चाम् अर्चयेत्सूर्यनामभिः सूर्यार्चां शिवलिङ्गे च प्रकुर्वन् पूजयेद्यतः
One should worship Umā and Maheśvara with names of the Sun; and by offering worship to the Sun on a Śivaliṅga, one should perform the pūjā accordingly.
उमापते रवेर्वापि न भेदो दृश्यते क्वचित् यस्मात्तस्मान्मुनिश्रेष्ठ गृहे शम्भुं समर्चयेत्
There is never any distinction between Umāpati and Ravi; therefore, O best of sages, one should worship Śambhu at home.
हस्ते च सूर्याय नमो ऽस्तु पादाव् अर्काय चित्रासु च गुल्फदेशम् स्वातीषु जङ्घे पुरुषोत्तमाय धात्रे विशाखासु च जानुदेशम्
To the hand, obeisance to Sūrya; to the feet, to Arka; to the ankle region in Citrā; to the shanks in Svātī, to Puruṣottama; to the knees in Viśākhā, to Dhātṛ.
तथानुराधासु नमो ऽभिपूज्यम् ऊरुद्वयं चैव सहस्रभानोः ज्येष्ठास्वनङ्गाय नमो ऽस्तु गुह्यम् इन्द्राय सोमाय कटी च मूले
Likewise, in Anurādhā, obeisance and worship to both thighs of Sahasrabhānu; in Jyeṣṭhā, obeisance to Anaṅga at the secret part; to Indra and Soma at the base of the hips.
पूर्वोत्तराषाढयुगे च नाभिं त्वष्ट्रे नमः सप्ततरंगमाय तीक्ष्णांशवे च श्रवणे च कुक्षौ पृष्ठं धनिष्ठासु विकर्तनाय
In the conjunction of Pūrvā and Uttarāṣāḍhā, obeisance to Tvaṣṭṛ at the navel, to Saptataraṅgama; to Tīkṣṇāṃśu at Śravaṇa, at the belly; and to Vikartana at the back in Dhaniṣṭhā.
चक्षुःस्थलं ध्वान्तविनाशनाय जलाधिपर्क्षे परिपूजनीयम् पूर्वोत्तराभाद्रपदाद्वये च बाहू नमश्चण्डकराय पूज्यौ
The eye region is to be worshipped as the destroyer of darkness in the lunar mansion of Jalādhipa; in Pūrvā and Uttarābhādrapadā, the arms are to be worshipped as belonging to Caṇḍakara.
साम्नामधीशाय करद्वयं च संपूजनीयं द्विज रेवतीषु नखानि पूज्यानि तथाश्विनीषु नमो ऽस्तु सप्ताश्वधुरंधराय
Both hands are to be worshipped as the lord of the Sāmans, O twice-born; in Revatī, the nails are to be worshipped; in Aśvinī, obeisance to the bearer of the seven-horse chariot.
कठोरधाम्ने भरणीषु कण्ठं दिवाकरायेत्यभिपूजनीया ग्रीवाग्निऋक्षे ऽधरमम्बुजेशे सम्पूजयेन्नारद रोहिणीषु
To the one with a hard abode, in Bharaṇī, the throat is to be worshipped as Divākara; the neck in Agnirīkṣa; the lower lip in Ambujeśa, O Nārada, in Rohiṇī.
मृगोत्तमाङ्गे दशना मुरारेः संपूजनीया हरये नमस्ते नमः सवित्रे रसनां शंकरे च नासाभिपूज्या च पुनर्वसौ च
In Mṛga, the teeth are to be worshipped as belonging to Murāri; obeisance to Hari; obeisance to Savitṛ at the tongue; to Śaṃkara at the nose, and again in Punarvasu.
ललाटमम्भोरुहवल्लभाय पुष्ये ऽलका वेदशरीरधारिणे सार्पे ऽथ मौलिं विबुधप्रियाय मघासु कर्णाविति गोगणेशे
The forehead is to be worshipped as belonging to the beloved of the lotus; in Puṣya, the hair is for the bearer of the Veda-body; in Sārpa, the crown for the one dear to the gods; in Maghā, the ears for Gogaṇeśa.
पूर्वासु गोब्राह्मणवन्दनाय नेत्राणि संपूज्यतमानि शम्भोः अथोत्तराफल्गुनिभे भ्रुवौ च विश्वेश्वरायेति च पूजनीये
In Pūrvā Phalgunī, the eyes of Śambhu are to be worshipped for the honor of cows and Brahmins; in Uttarā Phalgunī, the eyebrows are to be worshipped as belonging to Viśveśvara.
नमो ऽस्तु पाशाङ्कुशशूलपद्मकपालसर्पेन्दुधनुर्धराय गजासुरानङ्गपुरान्धकादिविनाशमूलाय नमः शिवाय
Obeisance to the wielder of noose, goad, trident, lotus, skull, serpent, moon, and bow; obeisance to Śiva, the root cause of the destruction of Gajāsura, Kāma, Pura, Andhaka, and others.
इत्यादि चास्त्राणि च पूज्य नित्यं विश्वेश्वरायेति शिवो ऽभिपूज्यः भोक्तव्यमत्रैवमतैलशाकम् अमांसमक्षारमभुक्तशेषम्
Thus, these and other weapons are to be worshipped always as belonging to Viśveśvara; Śiva should be worshipped, and here one should partake of food without oil, greens, meat, salt, or leftovers.
इत्येवं द्विज नक्तानि कृत्वा दद्यात् पुनर्वसौ शालेयतण्डुलप्रस्थम् औदुम्बरमये घृतम्
Thus, O twice-born, after performing night fasts, one should give on Punarvasu a prastha of rice grown in wet fields, with ghee in a vessel made of udumbara wood.
संस्थाप्य पात्रे विप्राय सहिरण्यं निवेदयेत् सप्तमे वस्त्रयुग्मं च पारणे त्वधिकं भवेत्
Placing it in a vessel, one should offer it to a Brahmin along with gold; on the seventh day, a pair of garments should also be given at the conclusion of the vow.
चतुर्दशे तु सम्प्राप्ते पारणे नारदाब्दिके ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेद्भक्त्या गुडक्षीरघृतादिभिः
When the fourteenth day arrives, during the Nārada year, one should devotedly feed Brāhmaṇas with jaggery, milk, ghee, and similar offerings.
कृत्वा तु काञ्चनं पद्मम् अष्टपत्त्रं सकर्णिकम् शुद्धमष्टाङ्गुलं तच्च पद्मरागदलान्वितम्
Then, one should make a golden lotus with eight petals and a central pericarp, pure and measuring eight fingers in breadth, adorned with petals of ruby.
शय्यां विलक्षणां कृत्वा विरुद्धग्रन्थिवर्जिताम् सोपधानकविश्रामस्वास्तरव्यजनानि च
One should prepare a special bed, free from knots and defects, complete with a pillow, a resting place, a comfortable seat, and a fan.
भाजनोपानहछत्त्रचामरासनदर्पणैः भूषणैरपि संयुक्तां फलवस्त्रानुलेपनैः
It should be furnished with vessels, footwear, umbrella, chowrie, seat, mirror, ornaments, as well as fruits, cloth, and unguents.
तस्यां विधाय तत्पद्मम् अलंकृत्य गुणान्वितम् कपिलां वस्त्रसंयुक्तां सुशीलां च पयस्विनीम्
Upon that, having placed the lotus and adorned it with virtues, one should place a tawny cow, endowed with cloth, of good character, and yielding milk.
रौप्यखुरीं हेमशृङ्गीं सवत्सां कांस्यदोहनाम् दद्यान्मन्त्रेण पूर्वाह्णे न चैनामभिलङ्घयेत्
One should give a cow with silver hooves, golden horns, a calf, and a bronze milking vessel, in the forenoon with mantras, and should not step over her.
यथैवादित्यशयनम् अशून्यं तव सर्वदा कान्त्या धृत्या श्रिया रत्या तथा मे सन्तु सिद्धयः
Just as your resting place, O Sun, is never empty, always radiant, steadfast, prosperous, and delightful—so may my accomplishments be.
यथा न देवाः श्रेयांसं त्वदन्यमनघं विदुः तथा माम् उद्धराशेषदुःखसंसारसागरात्
As the gods know no one superior to you, O faultless one, in the same way, lift me up from the endless ocean of worldly sorrow.
ततः प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य प्रणिपत्य विसर्जयेत् शय्यागवादि तत्सर्वं द्विजस्य भवनं नयेत्
Then, having circumambulated and bowed, one should dismiss; all that—bed and the rest—should be taken to the Brāhmaṇa’s house.
नैतद्विशीलाय न दाम्भिकाय कुतर्कदुष्टाय विनिन्दकाय प्रकाशनीयं व्रतमिन्दुमौलेर् यश्चापि निन्दामधिकां विधत्ते
This vow of the moon-crested one should not be revealed to the wicked, the hypocrite, the one corrupted by false logic, or the blasphemer; nor to one who speaks excessive slander.
भक्ताय दान्ताय च गुह्यमेतद् आख्येयम् आनन्दकरं शिवस्य इदं महापातकभिन् नराणाम् अप्यक्षरं वेदविदो वदन्ति
This secret should be told to a devoted and self-controlled person; it brings joy and is of Śiva. Even a single syllable of this, say the knowers of the Veda, destroys great sins in people.
न बन्धुपुत्रेण धनैर्वियुक्तः पत्नीभिरानन्दकरः सुराणाम् नाभ्येति रोगं न च शोकदुःखं या वाथ नारी कुरुते ऽतिभक्त्या
He who is separated from relatives, sons, wealth, or wives, yet brings joy to the gods, does not encounter disease, nor sorrow or suffering; nor does any woman who performs this with great devotion.
