Thus, the lineage of the Pauravas has been recounted here as it truly is, along with that of the wise son of Pandu, the great-souled Arjuna.
O Suta, now tell me in order about those fires which are always worthy of reverence among the twice-born, and their lineage as well.
That fire, known as Abhimani, is remembered in the interval of Svayambhu; he was the mind-born son of Brahma, from whom Svaha gave birth.
Pavaka, Pavamana, and Shuci are the fires remembered; Pavamana is the fire produced by friction, and the electric fire is the son of Pavaka.
Shuci is remembered as the solar fire, and the immovable ones are also so called; the fire born of Pavamana is known as Havyavaha.
Pavaka, together with Saharaksha, and Shuci, whose face is Havyavaha; among the gods, Havyavaha is the first fire, the son of Brahma.
Saharaksha is among the gods; these three are the three fires, and from them, there are forty sons and grandsons.
I will now declare their names, distinguishing them separately; Pavana, the worldly fire, is the first and also that of Brahma.
Brahmaudanagni is his son, renowned as Bharata; Vaishvanara, the carrier of offerings, bore the oblation and died.
After his death, Atharvana was born, churned from the lotus ocean; Atharva is the worldly fire, known as the southern fire.
From Bhrigu was born Atharva, and Angiras is remembered as Atharvana; his fire is unworldly, and is also known as the southern fire.
Now, Pavamana is the fire produced by friction, and he is called the household fire, the first fire of Brahma.
Then, Sabhya and Avasathya, the two sons born of Samshatya; after that, Havyavahana desired sixteen rivers, and the fire called Ahavaniya is remembered by the twice-born as Abhimani.
Kaveri, Krishna-Veni, Narmada, Yamuna, Godavari, Vitasta, Chandrabhaga, and Iravati,
Vipasha, Kaushiki, Shatadru, Sarayu, Sita, Manasvini, Hradini, and Pavanā as well.
Dividing himself into sixteen forms, he wandered among them separately, desiring the altars.
The altars, established by their own names, produced the Dhiṣṇavas; since they were born in the altars, they are remembered as Dhiṣṇavas.
Thus, these sons of the rivers entered the altars; hear now, O mighty one, those who are to be enjoyed and those who are to be placed, Pravāhaṇa, Agnīdhra, and other Dhiṣṇavas established there.
As one moves about in the proper place at the beginning of a sacred day, listen to the order of those fires which are indescribable and unrestrainable.
The fire of the Vasus, the blazing fire, is on the second and northern altar; the sovereign, son of Agni, eight in number, are attended by the twice-born.

Brahmajyoti, with the earth as his domain, is called the one established in Brahman. The one to be approached by Ajaikapād is the Śālāmukha, from whom he originates.
The indescribable Ahirbudhnya is outside and at the southern end; these are his sons. All are to be approached by the twice-born, as remembered.
Next, I will speak of those eight who are to be moved about; the son of the Hotṛ, the fire of the sacrificial grass, the carrier of oblations.
The praiseworthy fire, Pracetā, is the second, the helper; the son of Agni, Viśvaveda, is called the Brahman’s reciter.
The origin of waters is remembered as Svāmbhaḥ, known as Setu. The Dhiṣṇya fires are those brought forth; these are worshipped with Soma by the twice-born.
Then the fire called Pāvaka, which is spoken of by the virtuous as joined, is to be known as Avabhṛtha; it is worshipped together with Varuṇa.
The son of Agni in the heart is in the belly, cooking for men; the fiery belly is always remembered as the pierced fire.
