To Pandu, five sons were born by divine means: Yudhishthira from Dharma, Bhimasena from the Wind-god,
Dhananjaya from Indra, equal in valor to Indra; and Nakula and Sahadeva were born to Madri from the Ashvins.
From these five Pandavas, sons were born to Draupadi; Draupadi bore the excellent Prativindhya to Yudhishthira.
She bore Shrutasena from Bhimasena, Shrutakirti from Dhananjaya, and the fourth, Shrutakarma, from Sahadeva.
From Nakula came Śatānīka; the sons of Draupadī are also renowned. Besides them, there are six other great chariot-warriors among the sons of the Pāṇḍavas.
From Bhīmasena and the Hiḍimbā woman was born the son Ghaṭotkaca; from Bhīma and Kāśī, the daughter of Baladhara, was born a son named Sarvaga.
Mādrī bore the son Suhotra from Sahadeva; and from Nakula was born Niramitra by Kareṇumatī, the princess of Cedi.
From Arjuna and Subhadrā was born the warrior Abhimanyu; and Devakī bore a son named Yaudheya from Yudhiṣṭhira.
From Abhimanyu was born Parīkṣit, the conqueror of enemy cities; Janamejaya, son of Parīkṣit, was supremely righteous.
He appointed the priest Vājasaneyaka as his Brahmin; but that Vājasaneyaka was cursed by the great sage Vaiśampāyana.
O fool, your words will not endure here on earth; as long as you remain in this world, so long will they persist.
From that time onward, knowing the victory of the Kṣatriya, all approached and remained with King Janamejaya.
From that time, by the curse, the Kṣatriya sacrificers were lost; from then on, sacrificers in the sacrifice disappeared entirely.
Some Kṣatriya sacrificers, by the curse of that great soul, after offering the full-moon oblation to Prajāpati, were then restrained from entering by Vaiśampāyana.
Parīkṣit's son was Janamejaya of the Paurava line; the great Vājasaneyaka performed the horse sacrifice twice for him.
Having completed all that, the sage Vājasaneyaka, cursed in a dispute with the Brahmins, went to the forest.
From Janamejaya was born Śatānīka, a mighty man; Janamejaya installed his son Śatānīka in the kingdom.
Then, by the horse sacrifice, to Śatānīka the mighty was born Adhisomakṛṣṇa, who is now greatly renowned.
While he ruled the kingdom, you performed here the difficult and lengthy sacrifice—three years at Puṣkara, two years at Kurukṣetra, and at Dṛṣadvatī, O best of Brahmins.
We wish to hear, O Lomaharṣaṇa, about the future of the peoples; you have already recounted what happened in the past.

In which lineages will the Kṣatriyas remain, and which kings will arise? Tell us their lifespans and their names, O sage.
Tell us the measure of the Kṛta Yuga, and likewise of the Tretā and Dvāpara; also the measure of Kali Yuga, its faults, and its end.
O Lord, please tell us, having considered the measure of happiness and sorrow, the faults of the people, and the nature of the age.
Just as Vyāsa, whose actions are untroubled, has previously described to me, so too will the Kali age and the cycles of Manus come to be.
Listen to all that I speak of which is yet to come; hereafter I will declare the kings who are destined to be.
In the lineages of Aida, Ikṣvāku, and Puru, and in those where the auspicious Aida-Ikṣvāku clan will be established, I will recount all those future kings who have been mentioned.
From them, other kings will also arise again—Kṣatriyas, Pāraśavas, Śūdras, and others who dwell outside.
The Andhas, Śakas, Pulindas, Cūlikas, Yavanas, Kaivartas, Ābhīras, Śabaras, and others born from foreigners—I will describe them in turn, and name those kings as well.
Among them, Adhisomakṛṣṇa will be the first king; I will speak of his descendants, those future kings who have been mentioned.
Adhisomakṛṣṇa's son, Vivakṣu, will become king; when the city called Nāgasāhvaya is taken by the Gaṅgā, he will rule there.
