देवापिः शंतनुश्चैव वाह्लीकश्चैव ते त्रयः वाह्लीकस्य तु दायादाः सप्त वाह्लीश्वरा नृपाः देवापिस्तु ह्य् अपध्यातः प्रजाभिरभवन्मुनिः
Devapi, Shantanu, and Vahlika—these three were his sons; Vahlika's heirs were seven kings of Vahli; but Devapi, being rejected by the people, became a sage.
प्रजाभिस्तु किमर्थं वै ह्य् अपध्यातो जनेश्वरः को दोषो राजपुत्रस्य प्रजाभिः समुदाहृतः
For what reason, indeed, was this lord of men rejected by the people? What fault of the prince was spoken of by the people?
किलासीद्राजपुत्रस्तु कुष्ठी तं नाभ्यपूजयन् कार्यं चैव तु देवानां क्षत्रं प्रति द्विजोत्तमाः भविष्यं कीर्तयिष्यामि शंतनोस्तु निबोधत
The prince was afflicted with leprosy, so they did not honor him; and, O best of Brahmins, I will tell you what is destined for the Kshatriya line and the gods. Now listen to the story of Shantanu.
शंतनुस्त्वभवद्राजा विद्वान्स वै महाभिषक् इदं चोदाहरन्त्यत्र श्लोकं प्रति महाभिषक्
Shantanu became king, learned and a great healer; and regarding this great healer, this verse is recited.
यं यं कराभ्यां स्पृशति जीर्णं रोगिणमेव च पुनर्युवा च भवति तस्मात्तं शंतनुं विदुः
Whoever he touched with his hands, whether aged or ill, would become young again; therefore, he was known as Shantanu.
तत्तस्य शंतनुत्वं हि प्रजाभिरिह कीर्त्यते ततो ऽवृणुत भार्यार्थं शंतनुर्जाह्नवीं नृप
This quality of Shantanu is indeed praised among the people; then Shantanu, desiring a wife, chose Jahnavi.
तस्यां देवव्रतं नाम कुमारं जनयद्विभुः काली विचित्रवीर्यं तु दाशेयी जनयत्सुतम्
By her, the illustrious son named Devavrata was born; and Kali bore a son named Vichitravirya to Dashini.
शंतनोर्दयितं पुत्रं शान्तात्मानमकल्मषम् कृष्णद्वैपायनो नाम क्षेत्रे वैचित्रविर्यके
To Shantanu was born a beloved son, pure in mind and free from sin, named Krishna Dvaipayana, in the field of Vichitravirya.
धृतराष्ट्रं च पाण्डुं च विदुरं चाप्यजीजनत् धृतराष्ट्रस्तु गान्धार्यां पुत्रानजनयच्छतम्
He begot Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura; and Dhritarashtra begot a hundred sons by Gandhari.
तेषां दुर्योधनः श्रेष्ठः सर्वक्षत्रस्य वै प्रभुः माद्री कुन्ती तथा चैव पाण्डोर्भार्ये बभूवतुः
Among them, Duryodhana was the foremost, lord of all the Kshatriyas; Madri and Kunti were Pandu's wives.
देवदत्ताः सुताः पञ्च पाण्डोरर्थे ऽभिजज्ञिरे धर्माद्युधिष्ठिरो जज्ञे मारुताच्च वृकोदरः
To Pandu, five sons were born by divine means: Yudhishthira from Dharma, Bhimasena from the Wind-god,
इन्द्राद्धनंजयश्चैव इन्द्रतुल्यपराक्रमः नकुलं सहदेवं च माद्र्यश्विभ्यामजीजनत्
Dhananjaya from Indra, equal in valor to Indra; and Nakula and Sahadeva were born to Madri from the Ashvins.
पञ्चैते पाण्डवेभ्यस्तु द्रौपद्यां जज्ञिरे सुताः द्रौपद्यजनयच्छ्रेष्ठं प्रतिविन्ध्यं युधिष्ठिरात्
From these five Pandavas, sons were born to Draupadi; Draupadi bore the excellent Prativindhya to Yudhishthira.
श्रुतसेनं भीमसेनाच् छ्रुतकीर्तिं धनंजयात् चतुर्थं श्रुतकर्माणं सहदेवाद् अजायत
She bore Shrutasena from Bhimasena, Shrutakirti from Dhananjaya, and the fourth, Shrutakarma, from Sahadeva.
नकुलाच्च शतानीकं द्रौपदेयाः प्रकीर्तिताः तेभ्यो ऽपरे पाण्डवेयाः षडेवान्ये महारथाः
From Nakula came Śatānīka; the sons of Draupadī are also renowned. Besides them, there are six other great chariot-warriors among the sons of the Pāṇḍavas.
हैडम्बो भीमसेनात्तु पुत्रो जज्ञे घटोत्कचः काशी बलधराद्भीमाज् जज्ञे वै सर्वगं सुतम्
From Bhīmasena and the Hiḍimbā woman was born the son Ghaṭotkaca; from Bhīma and Kāśī, the daughter of Baladhara, was born a son named Sarvaga.
सुहोत्रं तनयं माद्री सहदेवादसूयत करेणुमत्यां चैद्यायां निरमित्रस्तु नाकुलिः
Mādrī bore the son Suhotra from Sahadeva; and from Nakula was born Niramitra by Kareṇumatī, the princess of Cedi.
सुभद्रायां रथी पार्थाद् अभिमन्युरजायत यौधेयं देवकी चैव पुत्रं जज्ञे युधिष्ठिरात्
From Arjuna and Subhadrā was born the warrior Abhimanyu; and Devakī bore a son named Yaudheya from Yudhiṣṭhira.
अभिमन्योः परीक्षित्तु पुत्रः परपुरजयः जनमेजयः परीक्षितः पुत्रः परमधार्मिकः
From Abhimanyu was born Parīkṣit, the conqueror of enemy cities; Janamejaya, son of Parīkṣit, was supremely righteous.
ब्रह्माणं कल्पयामास स वै वाजसनेयकम् स वैशम्पायनेनैव शप्तः किल महर्षिणा
He appointed the priest Vājasaneyaka as his Brahmin; but that Vājasaneyaka was cursed by the great sage Vaiśampāyana.
न स्थास्यतीह दुर्बुद्धे तवैतद्वचनं भुवि यावत्स्थास्यसि त्वं लोके तावदेव प्रपत्स्यति
O fool, your words will not endure here on earth; as long as you remain in this world, so long will they persist.
क्षत्रस्य विजयं ज्ञात्वा ततःप्रभृति सर्वशः अभिगम्य स्थिताश्चैव नृपं च जनमेजयम्
From that time onward, knowing the victory of the Kṣatriya, all approached and remained with King Janamejaya.
ततःप्रभृति शापेन क्षत्रियस्य तु याजिनः उत्सन्ना याजिनो यज्ञे ततःप्रभृति सर्वशः
From that time, by the curse, the Kṣatriya sacrificers were lost; from then on, sacrificers in the sacrifice disappeared entirely.
क्षत्रस्य याजिनः केचिच् छापात्तस्य महात्मनः पौर्णमासेन हविषा इष्ट्वा तस्मिन्प्रजापतिम् स वैशम्पायनेनैव प्रविशन्वारितस्ततः
Some Kṣatriya sacrificers, by the curse of that great soul, after offering the full-moon oblation to Prajāpati, were then restrained from entering by Vaiśampāyana.
परीक्षितः सुतो ऽसौ वै पौरवो जनमेजयः द्विर् अश्वमेधमाहृत्य महावाजसनेयकः
Parīkṣit's son was Janamejaya of the Paurava line; the great Vājasaneyaka performed the horse sacrifice twice for him.
प्रवर्तयित्वा तं सर्वम् ऋषिं वाजसनेयकम् विवादे ब्राह्मणैः सार्धम् अभिशप्तो वनं ययौ
Having completed all that, the sage Vājasaneyaka, cursed in a dispute with the Brahmins, went to the forest.
जनमेजयाच्छतानीकस् तस्माज्जज्ञे स वीर्यवान् जनमेजयः शतानीकं पुत्रं राज्ये ऽभिषिक्तवान्
From Janamejaya was born Śatānīka, a mighty man; Janamejaya installed his son Śatānīka in the kingdom.
अथाश्वमेधेन ततः शतानीकस्य वीर्यवान् जज्ञे ऽधिसोमकृष्णाख्यः साम्प्रतं यो महायशाः
Then, by the horse sacrifice, to Śatānīka the mighty was born Adhisomakṛṣṇa, who is now greatly renowned.
तस्मिञ्छासति राष्ट्रं तु युष्माभिरिदमाहृतम् दुरापं दीर्घसत्त्रं वै त्रीणि वर्षाणि पुष्करे वर्षद्वयं कुरुक्षेत्रे दृषद्वत्यां द्विजोत्तमाः
While he ruled the kingdom, you performed here the difficult and lengthy sacrifice—three years at Puṣkara, two years at Kurukṣetra, and at Dṛṣadvatī, O best of Brahmins.
भविष्यं श्रोतुमिच्छामः प्रजानां लोमहर्षणे पुरा किल यदेतद्वै व्यतीतं कीर्तितं त्वया
We wish to hear, O Lomaharṣaṇa, about the future of the peoples; you have already recounted what happened in the past.
