तस्यां वै धूमवर्णायाम् अजमीढः समीयिवान् ऋक्षं सा जनयामास धूमवर्णं शताग्रजम्
Into Dhūminī, whose complexion was smoky, Ajamīḍha entered; she gave birth to Ṛkṣa, called Dhūmavarṇa, the eldest of a hundred.
ऋक्षात्संवरणो जज्ञे कुरुः संवरणात् ततः यः प्रयागमतिक्रम्य कुरुक्षेत्रमकल्पयत्
From Ṛkṣa was born Saṃvaraṇa; from Saṃvaraṇa, Kuru; who, after crossing Prayāga, established Kurukṣetra.
कृष्यतस्तु महाराजो वर्षाणि सुबहून्यथ कृष्यमाणस्ततः शक्रो भयात्तस्मै वरं ददौ
The great king Kuru cultivated the land for many years; while he was cultivating, Indra, out of fear, granted him a boon.
पुण्यं च रमणीयं च कुरुक्षेत्रं तु तत्स्मृतम् तस्यान्ववायः सुमहान् यस्य नाम्ना तु कौरवाः
That Kurukṣetra is renowned as sacred and delightful; his vast lineage is known by his name as the Kauravas.
कुरोस्तु दयिताः पुत्राः सुधन्वा जह्नुरेव च परीक्षिच्च महातेजाः प्रजनश्चारिमर्दनः
Kuru’s beloved sons were Sudhanvan, Jahnu, Parīkṣit of great splendor, and Prajana, the crusher of foes.
सुधन्वनस्तु दायादः पुत्रो मतिमतां वरः च्यवनस्तस्य पुत्रस्तु राजा धर्मार्थतत्त्ववित्
Sudhanvan’s heir was Cyavana, foremost among the wise; Cyavana’s son was the king Kṛmi, who understood the essence of dharma and artha.
च्यवनस्य कृमिः पुत्र ऋक्षाज्जज्ञे महातपाः कृमेः पुत्रो महावीर्यः ख्यातस्त्विन्द्रसमो विभुः
Cyavana’s son was Kṛmi, born from Ṛkṣa, a great ascetic; Kṛmi’s son, renowned as equal to Indra in might, was Vibhu of great valor.
चैद्योपरिचरो वीरो वसुर्नामान्तरिक्षगः चैद्योपरिचराज्जज्ञे गिरिका सप्त वै सुतान्
The heroic Caidyoparicara, called Vasus, dwelled in the sky; from Caidyoparicara was born Girikā, who had seven sons.
महारथो मगधराड् विश्रुतो यो बृहद्रथः प्रत्यश्रवाः कुशश्चैव चतुर्थो हरिवाहनः
The great chariot-warrior, king of Magadha, famed as Bṛhadratha; Pratyaśravā, Kuśa, and the fourth, Harivāhana.
पञ्चमश्च यजुश्चैव मत्स्यः काली च सप्तमी बृहद्रथस्य दायादः कुशाग्रो नाम विश्रुतः
The fifth was Yaju, the sixth Matsya, and the seventh Kālī; Bṛhadratha’s heir was Kuśāgra, renowned by name.
कुशाग्रस्यात्मजश्चैव वृषभो नाम वीर्यवान् वृषभस्य तु दायादः पुण्यवान्नाम पार्थिवः
Kuśāgra’s own son was Vṛṣabha, mighty in strength; Vṛṣabha’s heir was Puṇyavān, a virtuous king.
पुण्यः पुण्यवतश्चैव राजा सत्यधृतिस्ततः दायादस्तस्य धनुषस् तस्मात्सर्वश्च जज्ञिवान्
Puṇya, son of Puṇyavān, was king Satyadhṛti; his heir was Dhanu, and from him Sarva was born.
सर्वस्य सम्भवः पुत्रस् तस्माद्राजा बृहद्रथः द्वे तस्य शकले जाते जरया संधितश् च सः
Sarva’s son was Sambhava, and from him king Bṛhadratha; two fragments of him were born, joined together by Jarā.
जरया संधितो यस्माज् जरासंधस्ततः स्मृतः जेता सर्वस्य क्षत्रस्य जरासंधो महाबलः
Because he was joined by Jarā, he is known as Jarāsaṃdha; Jarāsaṃdha, of great strength, conquered all the kṣatriyas.
जरासंधस्य पुत्रस्तु सहदेवः प्रतापवान् सहदेवात्मजः श्रीमान् सोमवित् स महातपाः
Jarāsaṃdha’s son was Sahadeva, renowned for his prowess; Sahadeva’s son was the illustrious Somavit, a great ascetic.
श्रुतश्रवास्तु सोमादेर् मागधाः परिकीर्तिताः जह्नुस्त्वजनयत्पुत्रं सुरथं नाम भूमिपम्
From Somavit’s line, the Māgadhas are celebrated; Jahnu begot a son named Suratha, a ruler of the earth.
सुरथस्य तु दायादो वीरो राजा विदूरथः विदूरथसुतश्चापि सार्वभौम इति स्मृतः
Suratha's heir was the valiant king Viduratha; and Viduratha's son was known as Sarvabhauma.
सार्वभौमाज्जयत्सेनो रुचिरस्तस्य चात्मजः रुचिरात्तु ततो भौमस् त्वरितायुस्ततो ऽभवत्
From Sarvabhauma came Jayatsena, and Rucira was his son; from Rucira was born Bhauma, and then Tvaritayu.
अक्रोधनस् त्व् आयुसुतस् तस्माद्देवातिथिः स्मृतः देवातिथेस्तु दायादो दक्ष एव बभूव ह
Akrodhana was the son of Ayus, and from him came Devatithi; Devatithi's heir was Daksha.
भीमसेनस्ततो दक्षाद् दिलीपस् तस्य चात्मजः दिलीपस्य प्रतीपस्तु तस्य पुत्रास् त्रयः स्मृताः
From Daksha came Bhimasena, and Dilipa was his son; Pratipa was the son of Dilipa, and he is remembered as having three sons.
देवापिः शंतनुश्चैव वाह्लीकश्चैव ते त्रयः वाह्लीकस्य तु दायादाः सप्त वाह्लीश्वरा नृपाः देवापिस्तु ह्य् अपध्यातः प्रजाभिरभवन्मुनिः
Devapi, Shantanu, and Vahlika—these three were his sons; Vahlika's heirs were seven kings of Vahli; but Devapi, being rejected by the people, became a sage.
प्रजाभिस्तु किमर्थं वै ह्य् अपध्यातो जनेश्वरः को दोषो राजपुत्रस्य प्रजाभिः समुदाहृतः
For what reason, indeed, was this lord of men rejected by the people? What fault of the prince was spoken of by the people?
किलासीद्राजपुत्रस्तु कुष्ठी तं नाभ्यपूजयन् कार्यं चैव तु देवानां क्षत्रं प्रति द्विजोत्तमाः भविष्यं कीर्तयिष्यामि शंतनोस्तु निबोधत
The prince was afflicted with leprosy, so they did not honor him; and, O best of Brahmins, I will tell you what is destined for the Kshatriya line and the gods. Now listen to the story of Shantanu.
शंतनुस्त्वभवद्राजा विद्वान्स वै महाभिषक् इदं चोदाहरन्त्यत्र श्लोकं प्रति महाभिषक्
Shantanu became king, learned and a great healer; and regarding this great healer, this verse is recited.
यं यं कराभ्यां स्पृशति जीर्णं रोगिणमेव च पुनर्युवा च भवति तस्मात्तं शंतनुं विदुः
Whoever he touched with his hands, whether aged or ill, would become young again; therefore, he was known as Shantanu.
तत्तस्य शंतनुत्वं हि प्रजाभिरिह कीर्त्यते ततो ऽवृणुत भार्यार्थं शंतनुर्जाह्नवीं नृप
This quality of Shantanu is indeed praised among the people; then Shantanu, desiring a wife, chose Jahnavi.
तस्यां देवव्रतं नाम कुमारं जनयद्विभुः काली विचित्रवीर्यं तु दाशेयी जनयत्सुतम्
By her, the illustrious son named Devavrata was born; and Kali bore a son named Vichitravirya to Dashini.
शंतनोर्दयितं पुत्रं शान्तात्मानमकल्मषम् कृष्णद्वैपायनो नाम क्षेत्रे वैचित्रविर्यके
To Shantanu was born a beloved son, pure in mind and free from sin, named Krishna Dvaipayana, in the field of Vichitravirya.
धृतराष्ट्रं च पाण्डुं च विदुरं चाप्यजीजनत् धृतराष्ट्रस्तु गान्धार्यां पुत्रानजनयच्छतम्
He begot Dhritarashtra, Pandu, and Vidura; and Dhritarashtra begot a hundred sons by Gandhari.
तेषां दुर्योधनः श्रेष्ठः सर्वक्षत्रस्य वै प्रभुः माद्री कुन्ती तथा चैव पाण्डोर्भार्ये बभूवतुः
Among them, Duryodhana was the foremost, lord of all the Kshatriyas; Madri and Kunti were Pandu's wives.
