नीलो नाम महाराजः पाञ्चालाधिपतिर्वशी उग्रायुधस्य दायादः क्षेमो नाम महायशाः
There was a king named Nīla, lord of the Pāñcālas, obedient, heir of Ugrāyudha; and there was Kṣema, of great renown.
क्षेमात्सुनीथः संजज्ञे सुनीथस्य नृपंजयः नृपंजयाच्च विरथ इत्येते पौरवाः स्तुताः
From Kṣema was born Sunītha; from Sunītha, Nṛpaṃjaya; and from Nṛpaṃjaya, Viratha—these are the Pauravas who have been praised.
अजमीढस्य नीलिन्यां नीलः समभवन्नृपः नीलस्य तपसोग्रेण सुशान्तिरुदपद्यत
From Ajamīḍha and Nīlinī was born the king Nīla; from Nīla, through intense austerity, arose Suśānti.
पुरुजानुः सुशान्तेस्तु पृथुस्तु पुरुजानुतः भद्राश्वः पृथुदायादो भद्राश्वतनयाञ्छृणु
Purujānu was born from Suśānti; from Purujānu, Pṛthu; Bhadrāśva was the son of Pṛthu—now hear of the sons of Bhadrāśva.
मुद्गलश्च जयश्चैव राजा बृहदिषुस्तथा जवीनरश्च विक्रान्तः कपिलश्चैव पञ्चमः
Mudgala, Jaya, King Bṛhadiṣu, the valiant Javīnara, and Kapila as the fifth—
पञ्चानां चैव पञ्चालान् एताञ्जनपदान्विदुः पञ्चालरक्षिणो ह्य् एते देशानामिति नः श्रुतम्
These five are known as the Pāñcālas, the peoples of these regions; these are the protectors of the Pāñcāla lands, as we have heard.
मुद्गलस्यापि मौद्गल्याः क्षत्रोपेता द्विजातयः एते ह्य् अङ्गिरसः पक्षं संश्रिताः काण्वमुद्गलाः
From Mudgala also, through Maudgalya, were born twice-borns endowed with kṣatriya qualities; these Kāṇva-Mudgalas have taken refuge with the lineage of Aṅgiras.
मुद्गलस्य सुतो जज्ञे ब्रह्मिष्ठः सुमहायशाः इन्द्रसेनः सुतस्तस्य विन्ध्याश्वस्तस्य चात्मजः
Mudgala's son was born, most devoted to Brahman and of great fame; his son was Indrasena, and Vindhyāśva was Indrasena's son.
विन्ध्याश्वान्मिथुनं जज्ञे मेनकायामिति श्रुतिः दिवोदासश्च राजर्षिर् अहल्या च यशस्विनी
From Vindhyāśva was born a pair by Menakā, as tradition says; and Divodāsa, the royal sage, and the illustrious Ahalyā.
शरद्वतस्तु दायादम् अहल्या सम्प्रसूयत शतानन्दमृषिश्रेष्ठं तस्यापि सुमहातपाः
From Ahalyā, the heir of Śaradvat was born: the eminent sage Śatānanda, himself of great austerity.
सुतः सत्यधृतिर्नाम धनुर्वेदस्य पारगः आसीत्सत्यधृतेः शुक्रम् अमोघं धार्मिकस्य तु
His son was named Satyadhṛti, master of the science of archery; from Satyadhṛti came Śukra, unfailing and righteous.
स्कन्नं रेतः सत्यधृतेर् दृष्ट्वा चाप्सरसं जले मिथुनं तत्र संभृतं तस्मिन्सरसि संभृतम्
Satyadhṛti's seed, having fallen, was seen by an apsaras in the water; there, in that lake, a pair was conceived.
ततः सरसि तस्मिंस्तु क्रममाणं महीपतिः दृष्ट्वा जग्राह कृपया शंतनुर्मृगयां गतः
Then, as that pair was moving in the lake, the king Śaṃtanu, who had come for hunting, saw them and, moved by compassion, took them up.
एते शरद्वतः पुत्रा आख्याता गौतमा वराः अत ऊर्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि दिवोदासस्य वै प्रजाः
These are the sons of Śaradvat, renowned among the Gautamas; now I shall tell further of the descendants of Divodāsa.
दिवोदासस्य दायादो धर्मिष्ठो मित्रयुर्नृपः मैत्रायणावरः सो ऽथ मैत्रेयस्तु ततः स्मृतः
Divodāsa's heir was the righteous king Mitrayu, foremost of the Maitrāyaṇas; and from him was born Maitreya, as is remembered.
एते वंश्या यतेः पक्षाः क्षत्रोपेतास्तु भार्गवाः राजा चैद्यवरो नाम मैत्रेयस्य सुतः स्मृतः
These are the descendants of the sage, belonging to his line, and the Bhārgavas who took up kṣatriya duties; and the king Caidyavara, remembered as the son of Maitreya.
अथ चैद्यवराद्विद्वान् सुदासस्तस्य चात्मजः अजमीढः पुनर्जातः क्षीणे वंशे तु सोमकः
From Caidyavara came the learned Sudāsa, his son; and Ajamīḍha was born again, and when the line declined, Somaka.
सोमकस्य सुतो जन्तुर् हते तस्मिञ्छतं बभौ पुत्राणामजमीढस्य सोमकस्य महात्मनः
Somaka's son was Jantu; when he was slain, a hundred sons of the great-souled Ajamīḍha and Somaka flourished.
महिषी त्व् अजमीढस्य धूमिनी पुत्रवर्धिनी पुत्राभावे तपस्तेपे शतं वर्षाणि दुश्चरम्
The queen of Ajamīḍha, Dhūminī, who longed for a son, undertook severe austerities for one hundred years in the absence of a child.
हुत्वाग्निं विधिवत्सम्यक् पवित्रीकृतभोजना अग्निहोत्रक्रमेणैव सा सुष्वाप महाव्रता
Having properly offered oblations into the fire according to prescribed rites, and purified her food, she, steadfast in her great vow, slept in accordance with the agnihotra procedure.
तस्यां वै धूमवर्णायाम् अजमीढः समीयिवान् ऋक्षं सा जनयामास धूमवर्णं शताग्रजम्
Into Dhūminī, whose complexion was smoky, Ajamīḍha entered; she gave birth to Ṛkṣa, called Dhūmavarṇa, the eldest of a hundred.
ऋक्षात्संवरणो जज्ञे कुरुः संवरणात् ततः यः प्रयागमतिक्रम्य कुरुक्षेत्रमकल्पयत्
From Ṛkṣa was born Saṃvaraṇa; from Saṃvaraṇa, Kuru; who, after crossing Prayāga, established Kurukṣetra.
कृष्यतस्तु महाराजो वर्षाणि सुबहून्यथ कृष्यमाणस्ततः शक्रो भयात्तस्मै वरं ददौ
The great king Kuru cultivated the land for many years; while he was cultivating, Indra, out of fear, granted him a boon.
पुण्यं च रमणीयं च कुरुक्षेत्रं तु तत्स्मृतम् तस्यान्ववायः सुमहान् यस्य नाम्ना तु कौरवाः
That Kurukṣetra is renowned as sacred and delightful; his vast lineage is known by his name as the Kauravas.
कुरोस्तु दयिताः पुत्राः सुधन्वा जह्नुरेव च परीक्षिच्च महातेजाः प्रजनश्चारिमर्दनः
Kuru’s beloved sons were Sudhanvan, Jahnu, Parīkṣit of great splendor, and Prajana, the crusher of foes.
सुधन्वनस्तु दायादः पुत्रो मतिमतां वरः च्यवनस्तस्य पुत्रस्तु राजा धर्मार्थतत्त्ववित्
Sudhanvan’s heir was Cyavana, foremost among the wise; Cyavana’s son was the king Kṛmi, who understood the essence of dharma and artha.
च्यवनस्य कृमिः पुत्र ऋक्षाज्जज्ञे महातपाः कृमेः पुत्रो महावीर्यः ख्यातस्त्विन्द्रसमो विभुः
Cyavana’s son was Kṛmi, born from Ṛkṣa, a great ascetic; Kṛmi’s son, renowned as equal to Indra in might, was Vibhu of great valor.
चैद्योपरिचरो वीरो वसुर्नामान्तरिक्षगः चैद्योपरिचराज्जज्ञे गिरिका सप्त वै सुतान्
The heroic Caidyoparicara, called Vasus, dwelled in the sky; from Caidyoparicara was born Girikā, who had seven sons.
महारथो मगधराड् विश्रुतो यो बृहद्रथः प्रत्यश्रवाः कुशश्चैव चतुर्थो हरिवाहनः
The great chariot-warrior, king of Magadha, famed as Bṛhadratha; Pratyaśravā, Kuśa, and the fourth, Harivāhana.
पञ्चमश्च यजुश्चैव मत्स्यः काली च सप्तमी बृहद्रथस्य दायादः कुशाग्रो नाम विश्रुतः
The fifth was Yaju, the sixth Matsya, and the seventh Kālī; Bṛhadratha’s heir was Kuśāgra, renowned by name.
