Yaśodevī gave birth to the king Jayadratha, and Satyā, wife of Bṛhanmanā, bore the renowned son Vijaya.
Vijaya's son was Bṛhatputra; his son was Bṛhadratha; Bṛhadratha's son was Satyakarmā, a great-minded man.

Satyakarmā's son was Adhiratha, known as a charioteer; he accepted Karṇa, so Karṇa is the son of a charioteer. All this has been told as it was regarding Karṇa.

Pūru's son was the mighty king Janamejaya; his son was Prācītvata, who made the eastern region.

Sampāti's son was Raṃhavarcā; Bhadrāśva was his son. Bhadrāśva, by Dhṛtā, had ten sons with Apsaras mothers.

Dharmeya, Samnateyu, and Punyeyu—these ten are called the sons of Ucchaiorjvala, the wife of Takshaka's son.
From her, he begot Antinara, the king; and Antinara, with Manasvini, begot sons who were noble and illustrious.
Among them were Amurtarayas, a valiant one, and Trivana, a righteous man; Gauri was the third daughter, the auspicious mother of Mandhata.
From Ilina, a daughter was born, who gave birth to sons devoted to Brahmanic speech and valor; Shubhada was indeed born from Ilina.
Upadanavi obtained four sons from Ilina: Rishyanta, Dushyanta, Praveera, and Anadha.
From Dushyanta, the universal emperor, was born Samitinjaya; from Shakuntala, Bharata, after whom the Bharatas are named.
To Dushyanta, regarding his son, a bodiless voice spoke: 'Mother is the bellows, father the begetter; the son born from him is truly his.'
'Acknowledge your son, Dushyanta; do not slight Shakuntala. The son leads the father, who has sown the seed, from Yama's abode. You are the creator of this child; Shakuntala speaks the truth.'
Long ago, when Bharata's sons perished, a great destruction was wrought out of the mothers' wrath.
Then, brought by the Maruts, a son of Brihaspati was transferred to Bharata by the Maruts.
How was Bharadvaja, of great splendor, transferred by the Maruts to Bharata for the sake of a son? Tell me this truly.
When his wife was pregnant, Ushija remained on earth; seeing his brother's wife, Brihaspati spoke thus.
'Adorn yourself and approach me for union, O auspicious one.' Thus addressed, she herself spoke to Brihaspati.
'This embryo is mature and speaks with the voice of Brahman; your seed is unfailing, but this act is unrighteous.'
Thus addressed, Brihaspati himself replied to her: 'You, of lovely complexion, must not instruct me in proper conduct.'
Overpowering her by force, he began intercourse; then the embryo spoke to Brihaspati, who was acting violently.
'I am already present here, O Brihaspati, and your seed is unfailing; there is no room here for two.'
Thus addressed by the embryo, he, angered, replied: 'Because you, at such a time, when all beings desire birth, obstruct me, therefore you shall enter deep darkness for a long time.'
Then, restraining his desire, Bṛhaspati’s seed, fallen to the earth from Mamatā’s lack of joy, became a child as it ceased.
Seeing the boy born at once, Mamatā said, 'I will go to my own house; you, Bṛhaspati, take care of him.'
Having spoken thus, she departed; and when she had gone, he too abandoned the child. Seeing the boy forsaken by both mother and father, the Maruts, moved by compassion, took up that Bharadvāja.
At that time, Bharata, the illustrious one, performed many seasonal sacrifices for the sake of obtaining a son.
