Though born in a Śūdra womb, they were begotten at your wish, O best of gods. Knowing me to be blind and aged, your queen Sudeṣṇā sent me the Śūdra nurse out of disrespect, O king.
Then Bali sought to appease that foremost of sages, and the Dānava king rebuked his wife Sudeṣṇā.
Again, after adorning her, Bali sent Sudeṣṇā to the sage; and the queen did as she was instructed.
'Anoint yourself with curds mixed with salt and honey, and lick me from foot to head without disgust; then, O queen, you will obtain sons as you desire in your heart.'
The queen did everything as he instructed; but when it came to drinking, she avoided it.
Then he said to her, 'O auspicious one, since you have avoided the drinking, you will bear a son, but he will be the eldest.'
'O blessed one, you ought not to give me such a son. Since I am pleased as far as possible, grant me your favor, O lord.'
'O auspicious one, because of your transgression, it cannot be otherwise; your son will not give you grandsons, but your grandsons will bear fruit.'
Because she did not drink, there would be fitness; therefore, touching Dīrghatamas's limbs, he spoke thus.
'Whatever was tasted on your limbs, O fair-smiling one, but not on the generative organ, those remain in the womb like the full moon on the night of the full moon.'
'There will be five sons, O goddess, equal to the sons of the gods—brilliant, well-conducted, performers of sacrifice, and righteous.'
Of Sudeṣṇā, the eldest son was born as her portion: Aṅga, Kaliṅga, Puṇḍra, and Suhma likewise.
The king of Vanga and these five are the sons of Bali, born of the field; thus, these sons were given to Bali by Dirghatamas.
For those who had attained establishment, he caused them to become Brahmins; then, from the human lineage, he indeed generated offspring.
Then Surabhi spoke to Dirghatamas, having considered: 'Because you have made the law of the cow your authority, O mighty one—'
'And because of your unwavering devotion to us, I am pleased with you, O blameless one; therefore, I will inhale and dispel from you the long darkness.'
'This sin of Brihaspati also remains in you; I will inhale and remove from you old age, death, and darkness.'
Immediately, as soon as he was smelled, the eminent sage Asita became endowed with long life, beauty, and sight.
When the darkness was dispelled by the cow, Gautama then arose; Kakshivat, having gone with his father, entered Girivraja.
Having seen and touched his father, he sat for a long time in austerity; then, after a great period, he was purified by asceticism.
Having cast off the maternal body, the illustrious one attained Brahminhood; then his father spoke to him: 'I am a father because of you.'
'With a righteous and renowned son, I am fulfilled; having released himself, he then attained the abode of Brahman.'
Having attained Brahminhood, Kakshivat produced a thousand sons; the Kaushmandas and Gautamas are remembered as the sons of Kakshivat.
Thus, the meeting of Dirghatamas, Bali, and Vairochana has been told to you, as well as the lineage of both.
Bali, having praised those five sinless sons, spoke; he too, righteous in soul, fulfilled, was himself enveloped in yogic power.
Invisible to all beings, he, the lord, awaited the proper time; there, the heir of Anga was king Dadhivahana.
The son of Dadhivahana was the king known as Diviratha; from Diviratha's lineage came the wise king Dharmaratha.
That Dharmaratha, glorious, together with the great-souled king Shukra, drank Soma on the mountain at Vishnu's place.
Then Dharmaratha had a son named Citraratha; his son was Satyaratha, and from him was born Dasharatha.
He became known as Lomapada; his daughter was Shanta. Then the heroic descendant of Dasharatha, famed for his fourfold army, arose.
